Just figured i’d post this here for anyone who doesn’t know how to spot Fishing Attempts. (i.e: people trying to get you account info). This is a recent one i got sent by someone claiming to be Arena.Net

To protect your account, and avoid account theft or stolen by hackers which will cause account closed, our security department has developed a new dynamic password card security measures. If the forum cooperates, i bolded most of the Grammar errors that show it as a fishing attempt, as well as a few other things that people should be able to notice on their own if they pay attention to the text written in these fishing attempts. Also, another good thing to do if you use e-mail systems like Outlook, or even web-based e-mail services is to ‘hover’ (don’t click!) your mouse over the links within the fishing attempt. At the bottom of the window (be it a browser or Outlook) you will see the ‘actual’ link that is hidden under the clickable links in the message. If they do not match (or you can tell it is not the ‘official’ website link), you can be pretty sure if is a fake site you are about to click on.

lol be happy… they get annoying. Though i did have one enjoyable experience when someone tried to ‘fish’ me one day. but messed up on their HTML code, and rather than seeing the ‘pretty and official looking’ e-mail.. i instead got sent their broken code. Complete with their domain name and a few other items.

All of which i was able to use to track down the Real Life Owner of the fishing attempt + fishing website. I got his house address, name, phone number….. grins Sent him a e-mail to his own private e-mail explaining that i didn’t take kindly to the fishing attempt, and to let him know i was forwarding everything i discovered to the Game Company + CIA/FBI and the agency that covers internet fraud.

Its a bit sad though, as people STILL click on these links, no matter how much effort communities and game developers try to tell people not to.

I find it funny that they send it to a diff. email than I use for my account, lol. FAIL

hehe i know its suppose to be ‘phishing’.. but google Chrome hates that word and always tries to change it. And ‘fishing’ is what people think when talking about the bogus e-mails anyway =)

Anet has said time and time again they will never email you in any way to ask for your account info or send out emails on any changes to account log in or security. Any changes in account log in and security will be announced on this site and the game log in screen so if you receive any of these types of emails delete them. Hopefully no one falls for these phishing scams. I get these all the time even for game I never played and I respond to them with fake emails and passwords with colorful metaphors, some are quite funny I wish I could post them here.

It would be nice to fish in GW2. Their rivers and lakes looks so amazing.
