One of the things that bothers me is there’s a lack of dual wielding for new specs for example, you give the option for a 1 handed sword for the engineer holosmith but no option to use one in both hand.

Another example is torches for the Scourge Necromancer why can’t he use two torches?

And the Mirage doesn’t allow for 2 axes?

Is it logical that someone using a weapon effectively in combat must be able to use two of them equally as effectively?

I’m still waiting for a double Shield-wielding spec.

I do wish Holosmith could use an off-hand Sword. Engi off-hand weapons aren’t very good for Power damage unless Shield is secretly amazing.

Not at all. As anyone versed in any form of medieval martial arts will tell you, using a weapon in each hand is exceptionally difficult — especially two sword or anything that is heavy.

It was common to use a weapon like a main gauche, swordcatcher, or trident dagger in the offhand for parrying purposes or to finish a downed opponent, but even that was far more difficult than using a buckler or shield — which could ALSO be used for offense in the form of shield slams. Shields also provided protection from missile weapons to some degree (longbows and heavy crossbows could punch through them, though they were incredibly effective against early firearms).

Unless I missed something, the new Ranger elite (Soulbeast?) can now dual wield daggers

Nearly all weapon skills used in this game are, in effect some sort of magic. The weapon serves as a focal point for the powers (a “focus” in the traditional sense). So there’s no fundamental reason that we couldn’t see dual warhorns or axe/axe mesmers.

There are however balancing issues. It’s simpler to limit the number of permutations and ANet has generally followed trope-friendly conventions when doing so. (No main-hand warhorns or focus, no one-handed staffs, and so on.)

I’m all in favor of mixing things up, if there’s some fun gameplay associated with it. I don’t think dual-wielding is fun all by itself though; it needs the right set of skills, supporting traits, & animations, too.

The core ranger has the Dagger as offhand weapon, Soulbeast only allow use it as a Mainhand. But the right example: Spellbreaker learn to use Dagger as main an offhand weapons while warrior can’t use dagger.

I mean… the scourge kind of looks like it’s dual wielding scepters…. but one is on fire.
