I don’t usually make posts praising a game…especially an MMO. But wow am I impressed with GW2. This is my longish tale of how I started playing GW2 and why it will be on my HD for a very, very long time.

First, a little about me. Starting playing MMO’s with EQ1 vanilla. You know, back when you had to message a GM to give you a last name when you hit 20, and a GM would also announce when someone hit level 50. When a level grind, was a GRIND. No instances, no quest turn in XP, etc.

Anyway, I moved from MMO to MMO. From Lineage 2, to Shadowbane, to Anarchy Online, Conan, even WoW and Vanguard, and just about everything in between. My last MMO before I quit playing them was Warhammer Online. (Squig Herder = best class in any MMO…ever!). Well unless you consider Planetside2 and MMO….dunno.

After my time got shorter with kids and a wife and traveling for my job, I told myself I would not play another MMO. Too much time for a person like me, who is very competitive and has to be top tier type player. I started playing my race sim’s again (iracing, etc). Then went back to my combat flight sims (DCS series). While I loved the complexity and details of combat flight sims, I was real eager to play an RPG again. Not many good ones out there (I loathe Skyrim). So I looked for an MMO. I dl’d Neverwinter because I heard it was easy to solo, casual and free. Well it is easy to solo, it is casual, and free to some extent. I don’t care what anyone says about GW2 cash shop….its nothing as atrocious as Neverwinters ($35 for a mount….really?).

Ok, ok, so I played GW1 a little bit back in the day. Didn’t make much of an impression on me, since I don’t remember much about it. After playing NW and getting to max level (in 4 days) and running a few T1 and T2 dungeons and PvP I came to the conclusion that it was dull. Not open world, and nothing really interesting to see or explore, I decided to see what else it out there. I have been hearing about GW2 and thought, eh, lll check it out. WHAT? It isn’t free to play? Hmmm. Read reviews, watch gameplay, check out classes. Seems like it might be worth it. Ooooo….Ranger with a huge selection of pets? OK sold.

So, since last Saturday night, I have been hooked. I mean totally hooked. Not with just the classes, and the combat, but the actual environments. Starting as a Norn I thought the area you start in was the home “City”. Needless to say when I entered Hoelbrak for the first time my jaw dropped. I explored the whole kitten place. I got an area completion for doing it. But here is the kicker, I enjoyed exploring it. I enjoyed looking around. I wanted to. Now this of course led me to check out other starting cities. ALL of them not only represent each race perfectly, but are also awesome to look at.

As a person who does not any friends that play PC games, I am solo a lot. So running around, and just happening upon an event/quest and seeing other players there makes this perfect for me. Also the folks on my server Tarnished Coast, seem to be very friendly and helpful. I love the dynamic of the gameplay. Refreshing and seamless. From combat, to loot, to crafting/gathering, to mail, to bank management, etc. etc. is all perfect.

Now I know the newness of a new game wears off, but I can tell already this is a solid game. Eventually I will be looking for a guild of like minded folks, and getting back into PvP (which I enjoy very much), and dungeons and whatnot. I also know eventually there might be some grinding for certain items, etc. Thing is…I don’t think Ill mind it.

I think this is the first time in a loooong time that I have picked up a game with no expectations, and have been blown away. I am glad to be part of this GW2 community, and cant wait for 5 o’clock to log in and continue learn new things, see new areas, kill new monsters, and get new loot!

TL;DR:

GW2 is great. Coming from a person who has played just about type of MMO/FPS/RPG/SIM on the PC for 20+ years, that should mean something if it impresses me this fast.

Vaxx, you absolutely did the right thing by playing GW2 for a bit first before visiting these forums!

That way, you were able to form and solidify your own opinion (good and/or bad) about the game rather having it molded for you (whether consciously or, more likely, subconsciously) by the aforementioned doomsayers here before ever setting foot onto the world of Tyria.

I’m in the same boat, signed up for the free trial weekend they had a few months back and within one night of playing it I already purchased the game. I use to play a lot of shooters, planetside, bf3, etc. but since this game i just haven’t been in the mood at all. Love the pve, and man when you get into wvw it will send you on another crazy journey. There are a couple things i have gripes with but that’s just because i’m passionate and want the game to be even better. All in all though the game is simple amazing, and with all the new content coming out (now on an every two week release schedule) this is a great time to be in gw2!

Welcome aboard and to Tarnished Coast. I recommend looking up ‘www.guildwars2roleplayers.com’ as a sort of unofficial forum for the server that will give you a much nicer environment than the forums here might.

Lots of friendly folks on server, and should not be hard to find a guild to your tastes.

The one I run is mostly older folks with families – as such we try to stay active but sometimes have people on break for a bit.

Quoted for truth!

Besides that, I love this game too. To make a long story short, I started just after release with an Asura Thief, died a lot, said screw it, and let the game just sit on my HD for a few months. I went to delete the game but said I’d give it one more chance, rolled a Guardian and fell in love. After learning to play a bit better on my Guard, I deleted it (because I moved to a Euro server before moving back), and rerolled as Thief.

I could go on and on about the things that make me love GW2, but this post will be long. Anet did a wonderful job, and with tweaks here and there this game is only going to get a hell of a lot better, which kinda sucks in a way because I already play (and pay) a little more than I should. Beats drinkin’ though, lol.

I complain about some things, but that’s because I genuinely care about this title. Glad you’re enjoying GW2 as well, OP.

Good for you. What lvl are you?

Leveling was a blast, 1-80 and even a bit after. But once you realize what is in store for you later( grind, RNG, temporary fluff content ), sadly your enthusiasm goes down hill.

I dont want to discourage, the game is top 1 or two out there IMO. And Arenanet is trying new things, I give them all the credit in the world. Its hard to please MMO players.

Don’t let the naysayers get you down. Some of us are here from launch and still loving it.

The people that seem most disappointed are people who are playing the game looking for “end game”. Also the structure PvP people, a lot of them aren’t happy.

But a lot of people who are playing casually seem to quite like the game.

Hope you have a lot of fun here…and find yourself a good guild (even if you solo). I’d be lost without mine.

And dont let the rose colored glasses of fanbois blind you either. You must see the game for what it is after you reach level cap, not for the 1-80 experience(which definately was awsome). once you reach that cap and if you arent leveling alts, despite what many say, the game does change. It shouldnt, according to arenanet, but it does. Not many can just enjoy the game by running around adventuring anymore, not after multiple lvl 80 characters and 1k hours in the game.

Many of us thought and felt the game was going to go in one direction, but has since gone in another. And even after that, has splintered into other directions that completely contradict what was sold to us prior to launch.

Yes, the game is good, the game is innovative, the game is attractive, the game is fun. But there are enormous negatives that cant be avoided for much longer.

Additionally, I wish this game didnt have a level cap. I wish you simply increased in level, infinitately.

Glad you’re enjoying the game, friend. I hope your stay is long and pleasant.

My one recommendation to you is to enjoy the game in pieces. Do a few hearts and vistas, try some crafting, pop into sPvP or do some JPs. When you focus on just one aspect of the game the experience tends to suffer a bit but if you’re constantly bouncing around, the game will stay fresh and fun. I’m at 1600 hours played and still enjoying every minute.

Been playing since the beta and have an ungodly amount of hours clocked. Hit 80 sometime back in September or October and most of the time I play my main.

This is hands down the best MMO experience I’ve ever had. The gorgeous world, attention to detail, innovative concepts, I can pick and choose any day what I want to do, there’s none of this funneling me into one raid instance. With the rate that content is rolled out, the game is always fresh and it has the best community I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing with

I find all of you people who kitten about “end-game” and “grinding” funny. Half of you can’t make up your minds if you want “end-game”, which in and of itself is a grind in any MMO, and the other half kitten that there isn’t enough to do yet don’t want end game. I really don’t understand the community.

There is a lack of “end-game” when compared to a traditional MMO like Rift, WoW, etc, but there is still a large end game, it just depends on what you want/what you view as end game. Can I spend time to get better gear for a while? Yes, then end game. Can I spend time to get better looking gear? Yes, then end game. Is there constant events and new content (even if temporary)? Yes, then end game. Is there PvP? Yes, then end game. There is so much to do, just because you don’t want to do it does not mean there isn’t endgame.

The problem with Guild Wars is that half of the people want traditional end game, the other half are against it. People can say farming CoF isn’t end game it is a grind, yet they still do it. People say that there are only a few viable builds, yet they refuse to try other builds that do slightly less damage because they think everything has to be about maximum dps. You are playing a game where you can both dps/support, yet people say “OMGRGDDDDD, HAVE TO PLAY WARRIOR, GUARDIAN, OR MEZ.” Yes, that may be the “fastest” way to do something but that doesn’t mean it is the only way.

Same with people who say Rangers suck, or this or that (not talking about actual problems that certain professions have etc, just perception). Guild Wars, above any other MMO, let’s you get as much enjoyment as you take from it. Sure you only want to run the “optimal thing” but that doesn’t mean you can’t play in any of 1000 other ways. Sure you can get the “best” gear in the game from spending a few gold on the TP, but that doesn’t mean you have to.

There is so much that this game has to offer, yet all the people do is complain and whine. The community is split with what they want, Anet is trying to appease both, yet everyone complains. Anet is more active and does more updates than any other MMO I have seen (Rift comes to mind too). There are problems with the game, some of those problems are well known, A LOT are people’s opinions and perceptions.

There is nothing wrong with the game as a whole. There is nothing wrong with the end game. There is nothing wrong with the amount of builds. It is all people’s perception. The content is there, you take from it what you want.

Welcome, Vaxx! Hope you keep enjoying this game – I never thought anything would make me disinterested in my PS3 … haven’t picked up the control for weeks.
