New classes?

Q:

I’ve been thinking about this for a while now and thought I would share my ideas. Although I’m sure others have had similar, if not exactly the same thoughts about this topic. Either way, here are my thoughts about what new classes I would like to see added into Guild Wars 2 if ArenaNet decide to do so:

Since I’ve played quite a few MMO’s in my time so far and have only really gotten into two (Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft) I’ve noticed rather large similarities in class themes and characteristics. As an example, I’ll list some comparisons between classes in Guild Wars 2 (left) and World of Warcraft (right) below.

Guardian = Paladin
Necromancer = Warlock
Warrior = Warrior (no sh*t)
Elementalist = Mage
Thief = Rogue
Ranger = Hunter

Now of course these similarities are to be expected and are seen in almost every MMO, but what about classes that aren’t really seen very often? Such as the Monk and Death Knight from World of Warcraft and the Mesmer from Guild Wars 2. There are of course, probably, many other classes rarely seen in many MMO’s, but since I’m lazy I can’t be bothered to remember or look up any others, but I’m sure you get the point. Anyway, in my opinion it is VERY useful for an MMO to have a large variety of classes to choose from, as it allows more people to get into the game and their favorite class, whatever it may be (at least that’s how I think it works). For example, in my case, I’ve played World of Warcraft for a very long time now (about 4-6 years) and had a surprisingly hard time choosing a class that I could get into when starting, and due to this I took many breaks from playing it (some lasting up to a whole year). That is, until Blizzard introduced, the Death Knight. My favorite class from any MMO I have ever played, is by far, the Death Knight. I just love the theme of it and how its pretty much the exact opposite of the Paladin but at the same time is very similar.

Anyway, I think I’ve written enough for you to understand where I’m coming from, and I think quite a few people will know how I feel about not really being able to get into any certain class. Either way, I’m in this exact kind of state in Guild Wars 2 right now and hope that if ArenaNet do add new classes, at least one of them be similar, if not the exact same as the Death Knight. So far, I guess the class that comes closest to the kind of class I would really want to see is the Guardian.

Thank you for reading, and I hope some of you can relate.

XOXO

We are getting a new profession with the expansion:

I wouldn’t keep my hopes up for another new profession for a while after that.

It took me a while to find what the thesis is in this thread and here it is.

We will have a Death Knight, it is Necromancer with a Greatsword. Just get the Ceremonial plated armor outfit with black dye.

5x Warrior, 5x Ranger, 4x Elementalist, 4x Engineer,
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant

well we get specialisations very soon that will “mix up” the classes and the way they are played. So basically you will have soon

-Druid (ranger specialisation)
-Necro with greatsword (will most likely go the death knight route)
-Mesmer with shield (that SEEMS to go into chronomancer direction)
-Hammer engineer (also uses drones, not sure what direction thats gonna be)

Also we do know that the warrior gets an F2 skill with his specialisation (as visible in the PoI stream recently) and there seems to be a leak (SEEMS so take it with a grain of salt cause this is NOT official comfirmed) that the guardian gets a longbow.

Also there will be a completely new class called the revenant…besides a rather…ritualistic look with blindfold and sinister designed (heavy) armor and what the devs said about it (channels past legends of the gw lore…do with that what you want) we dont know much as of yet….but it looks kittening cool so much i can say.

Basically you soon will have some material to work with OP…if its what you are looking for…not sure, but lets just wait and see till they reveal more about it

we have 3 light, 3 medium and 2 heavy armored classes
HoT expansion will add 1 new heavy armored class, the revenant.

i dont think they will add new classes anywhere near soon (after the expansion) as they said they will add new profession specialization to existing classes.

Meaning we will see more specializations instead of new professions.

You also forgot engineers and mesmers.

You also compared gw2 professions with other mmo classes. While theres nothing wrong with that ,you should know that when anet was making gw2 classes they wherent looking at other mmo classes,but instead on gw1 professions

Guardians are a mix of monks and paragons

Warrior is warrior

elementalist is elementalist

mesmer is mesmer (with a new illusion mechanic)

Necro is necro

Engineer is a mix of ritualists, being able to summon something into the world that buffs/attacks foes/friends around

Ranger is ranger

Thief is assassin (with stealth but no real lead attack-offhand attack-dual strike attack skill combo )

So if you are really thinking about new classes in gw2 you should look at gw1 professions and their class mechanics that arent yet in gw2.

Things like a dervish for example, or the professions that wherent added into the game with Guild wars Utopia

why do you even compare gw2 with WoW ?…
you should maybe compare it with gw1.

guardian would be something like paragon + monk
(because of the shouts and the protections stuff)

Necromancer = Necromancer

warrior would be something like warrior + paragon
(paragon because of the shouts aswell)

ele = ele

thief = assassin

ranger = ranger

mesmer = mesmer + ritualist
(imo a phantasmal build feels a liiiiiiiiittle bit like a ritualist with tons of ghosts)

engineer is something new

gw1 is older than WoW.

My favorite class from any MMO I have ever played, is by far, the Death Knight. I just love the theme of it and how its pretty much the exact opposite of the Paladin but at the same time is very similar.

I also played WoW for many years, and the Death Knight ended up being my favorite class as well during WotLK. There were a few things I loved about it:

  • A deep personal story that gave you a meaningful place in the world
  • Flexibility in filling party roles combined with outstanding solo play
  • A sense of driving rhythm in play that required a combination of speed and skill

All in all it was a class that was easy to pick up and play and very forgiving while you learned it- it gave you a sense of power long before you mastered it. Yet it turned out to be difficult to master. Rather than the continuous skill rotation of other classes, DK required you to watch what was going on and respond correctly and quickly.

In short, Death Knight was very similar to all GW2 PvE.

:P

Perhaps that’s why Arthas was my last ever WoW boss…

As an elementalist since before Ultima VIII, Dark Age of Camelot and Final Fantasy ever used the concepts, I feel insulted anyone would dare compare the measly WoW mage with one of us.

It’ll be like comparing a street one-man-band performer with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

What’s next? Saying like the “benders” from the Avatar universe are as powerful as elementalists? Those amateurs? Come on! They can’t even cut the top of a mountain, turn it upside down and make it a floating island… pfff…

Anyways, ArenaNet has already come up with the solution to the problem of adding new ‘classes’ without introducing more professions: Specializations .

They will give professions new skills and traits and weapons they couldn’t use before. They themes and fantasy will be the same, but more focused on particular atributes. Like how the Ranger focuses on Nature Magic to become a Druid, conversely they could focus on skirmishing and get a hammer to become Skirmishers that go around with a Bunny Thumper build.

Same how warriors could get dual daggers and become Brawlers, pistols and become Armsmen, main hand shields and become defenders, or staves and become Tacticians.

I really wish these WoW players would stop calling for GW2 to polymorph into WoW. I recommend playing Rift. It’s WoW with better graphics.

Give us more GW 1 weapon and armor skins, please. COPY/PASTE ALREADY!!!!

Not saying this to be mean or anything, but if you want a WoW class, maybe you should play WoW, especially if it’s something like a deathknight? And the only similarity I can see a shaman and engineer have in common is that turrets act like totems because they’re stationary. Everything else, just no.

I’m not asking it to be like WoW. I just want a class that I can get into, is that too much to ask? Sorry if I offended anyone but I just though it would be okay to share some ideas. I guess not.

I think alll you can hope is that guardians get a specilization to you liking in expanaion or in the future then mate
