New games in 2014. can GW2 keep up?
- Release an EPIC dragon!!!!!! (cuz TESO dont have it and have it drop a precursor)
Scarlet was looking for Mordremoth. I think you can infer the rest from there.
“Memories are nice, but that’s all they are.”
TESO is always compared to GW2 because they have the same mechanics.
I already played their BETA and I feel that Im still on Tyria. I feel like GW2 is being cloned. But then a lot of players are pushing that game so hard. So how can Arenanet keep GW2 on the top?
Its hardly a clone. TESO doesn’t have heart quests and dynamic events like GW2, teh RvR is different. The ESO world is not as open as GW2. The classes and levelling mechanics are completely different.
And you forgot Wildstar.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi

RIP City of Heroes
Don’t forget housing! I’ve said it before on here, not everything should involve killing in game. Enough with the 24/7 Lulz… skillz… tearz, crud! Some of us want to relax and build in game. Instead of running around raiding other people crops, give us our own place to plant and grow crops. There’s soooo… much more to life and games than what GW2 is limiting us to.
Time to expand the game in play style, not just more of the same!
After all i heared about TESO its already dead before release
D3 … i was a long time D1 and D2 player but i played D3 only 2 weeks and will not give Blizzard more money.
Wildstar is WoW 2.00 .. since i hate raiding also not what i would play.
Don’t know what the other stuff is.
Personally the only MMO that i set some hopes in is EQNext, but that would not be released before 2015.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
It won’t need to keep up that much tbh and Guild Wars 2’s position now and where it can go seems promising with large chanses for ArenaNet to really impress the players.
Now why doesn’t it need to keep up? because most of the suggested games aren’t MMOs and the MMO industry isn’t usually affected that much by other genres. ESO and Wildstart are the only two MMOs who can compete_. Both aren’t really that huge in my opinion though and this is not a Gw2 fanboi opinion. I have been playing MMOs for a while and they quality these two games offer isn’t that evolutionary you could say, they are both decent game and in that aspect ESO is more promising than Wildstar becasue of the title itself and the Pvp but again the quality isn’t that amazing.
Many may like them but the games Gw2 released with offered far more compitition. ESO is more of a hyped title, impressing atm with the pvp. The early-game is extremly weak and the late-game is nice, it gets better but nothing amazing out there, I enjoyed it though [not the late-game, but progressing byond the newbie zones]. Wildstar is kinda the same story, both established games but not with something spectacular to offer.
On the other hand I won’t be surprised if Anet prepeared something, we never knew how those two would end up at the end of the day.
please dont say you want mounts, one look at ESO RvR and i never want to see another mount again.
Oh and Anet are crazy when it comes to risk. Remember that they actually released their game shortly after SWTOR, together with TSW and TERA and before WoW’s pandaria.
SWTOR was released 9-10 month before. If that is a problem new Games could never be released because there is always something else in that timeframe.

In my point of view, Wildstar looks really like WOW ( actually I really hope it could change a lot, back to the old days in version 6.0). Now I’m temporarily waiting for the alpha test for Star Citizen ( maybe next year XD). I played pre-alpha of Gloria Vicits, it’s like a HD version of M&B.
Any better ideals for MMOR this year expect of ESO?

ESO seems pretty meh tbh, as I said, it is a decent game but nothing too huge, it is nice but nothing evolutionary. It is like most other games when they release something that is a bit underwhelming considering the title. Aside from ESO, nothing this year.
Everquest next year is your best shot and we don’t know how well they will do it neither how will they will handle the free to play model.
I would have said Archeage but so far it is disappointing in Russia. Archeage is a nice experience but simliar to ESO, it basically doesn’t really live up to the hype of an evolution coming to the market. It is just another MMO that will find some people like some of the aspets they add.

Dark Souls 2 is incredible but it won’t do damage to this game. Two completely different games, so is WatchDogs and Infamous<—and this is mainly single player. On your logic, where is Destiny? That comes out this year. In summary, I personally think GW will be fine as a whole.

This was always my problem with GW1 – 100% of the game being combat based and the reason I never played it for too long. I always went back to that other game that had a lot more content variety. I hoped like heck that they would have changed for the better here, and indeed their promises of a “living world” may have tricked me there. What they meant was story and not other content besides combat….. Sigh.

What I could say is I tried the alpha pack of EQNL, the game is nice but with very poor optimization, I hope EQN could be better. Right now I even couldn’t find a good laptop to play EQNL. It’s looked like SOE is doing the same thing as what they did for EQ2.
Yup, ESO isn’t as good as skyrim, and it’s just like SWTOR by some means.
Well, I hope there would have good MMORs in the next year. Or I should say MMOR is dying.
Oh and Anet are crazy when it comes to risk. Remember that they actually released their game shortly after SWTOR, together with TSW and TERA and before WoW’s pandaria.
They had to release it then as they touted the game was all about dragons and it was the “year of the dragon” etc. It was a major thing for them….would have been bad “karma” if they did not release then.
Why would you want GW to keep up? Anet refuses to make expansions, refuses to add raids. They did give us, what, 2 new dungeons, but then they took them away. Great game, terrible follow-up. Just let it go with dignity.

Naw it’s just in a slump and the devs are finding their footing still and such. It will pick up again, the problem is most of the people who say the kinds of things you say will probably be long gone to see it all turn around. The question will be: “will it be too little too late?”.
GW2 is safe until EQN is out.
then we will see if Sony can live up to the hype or is it another failed vanguard.
unfortunately, GW2 is the best that the gaming industry has to offer to the world from end of 2012…
Oh something you guys seem to forget about this game is that you can always come back to it even if you try other games. Because of the free model and also the “casualness” of it. You never really have to do anything on this game besides the daily if you have done your own personal goals (map complete, story etc). Just keep up with the living story which is usually only a day or 2 worth of content (except where they time gate it like with the previous rubble for the halo/horns) and you are fine.
Diablo 3 sux….that game cant take me from GW2 even if Blizzard pay me to play it
Most of the games you listed are single player, people will get them play a bit get bored and come back. And ESO wouldn’t call it a mortal enemy. Got few beta invites, the game is bad, actually really bad. I doubt i would be getting it even if it was B2P like GW2, yet they want monthly fee for it and gem store on top of it. It will sink faster than SWTOR.
The arrogance and ignorance in this thread is ridiculous.
You might think that all those games suck and will fail, but the truth is:
- all of this games will drain players
- if you think all of them will come back after a month or so, you are delusional
- GW2 right now has very little to offer and no info for what is coming if there is anything
- the population of GW2 already took a fair hit over the last few monthes, we see empty servers more and more
We also have Titanfall, Destiny, EQNext and other titels coming that will entertain people for a long time. And people will just hop from release to release instead of playing something as old and stale as GW2.
Something needs to be done, just ignoring what’s going on outside of GW2 will just cause a unpleasant awakening at some point.

every mmo’s gonna have elements of grind in it, why would i wanna leave the game ive invested so much in just so i can start all over again in another?
Oh my! The treasure map expedition is your best hit on the list. I really loved doing clue scrolls in RS. Hopefully we can have something like this in GW2. Doing puzzles (jumping or those IRL puzzles that require you to slide pieces around to create a certain image), make use of sextant and compass to coordinate a location, solving a riddle or a question about things in GW (i.e. “How many sections does divinity’s reach have?”), mimicking emotes of a mime. HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT BE?!?!?
It’s something that takes you away from fighting and let’s you relax a bit.
Why should we care about this actually? It should be a.nets “problem” and not ours.
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
ESO is no real competition, people will try it for a month then after they experience how truly bad it is they will go back to their MMO’s of choice.
Both of the MMO’s you listed have subs.
ESO I played in the beta and all I can say is lol. At this point I can’ t give my keys away.
Wildstar looks promising but beyond the housing it is way too samey for me.
I think it is more a case of other games trying to keep up with GW 2 tbh
(edited by Morrigan.2809)
Only two of those can really be considered competitors (ESO, Wildstar), the rest are single player games with different audiences.
there never has been and never will be a free market without competitors, so how exactly is this a special situation?
In other news: WoW Killers are unicorns.

It is just, that GW2 had like how many competitors since release? FFIX reloaded was the only true MMO release, and that has failed before.
So there was none, and ANet was lucky. These days are over. We have two big MMO releases right around the corner, and some very potential multi-player titels.
There will be pressure, I for one would like to see ANets answer on this challenge. Silence is for sure the worst approach.

Diablo 3 : ROS – I bought and will play, but it’s a dungeon crawler and not an MMO really. Not sure this is comparable. Sure some player will invest that kind of time, but I would guess that most will not.
- Infamous : Second Son
– Dark Souls 2
– Watch Dog — This and the two above…What? None of these are MMOs and most are single player games I think? Not sure how these relate at all to GW2.
- WildStar —Possibly, we’ll know more in June? It’s raid centric so it might appeal to those players. Some are calling it wow 2.0. I can kind of understand why. Some will love it some will not.
- and the mortal enemy of GW2 : The Elder Scrolls Online. —Well it’s close to release, so we’ll know soon enough. It’s a new world to explore so it will have that going for it. It also has AVA and a much larger map than GW2’s WVW. (much larger) but other than that I am not sure where the other comparisons are coming from. Combat is different, questing is different, crafting is different, dungeons are fairly different, etc. etc.

sure, sure, in 2012 and 2013 there were no good game releases. And all already existing MMORPGs had shut down for GW2.
Of cause they have to keep fighting for their market share, either with product quality or marketing. Still, that is the same way it ever was and ever will be.

Yeah, I just fear, that ANet might have gotten too used to the absence of competitors. Hell, even the new WoW expansion will release this year. I am guessing that this will take its toll on the game too.
Meanwhile, ANet is like: Nah, no need to show our players which direction we are going, they luv us so much anyways.

GW2 doesn’t have a subscription, so it is never in fear of ‘dying’ to me. Not having to pay a monthly fee means I can come back whenever there is new content, so they don’t have to try (and fail) to keep me endlessly entertained.

I don´t think you should fear anything, because we, the players, can only win. Either one of the upcoming games (let´s stick with MMO here, I don´t know any MMO player who doesn´t play single player games on the side) is really a lot better or more appealing to you or me and we just go there – or the competition pushes GW2 to new limits. Either way, win-win for us.
None of the games except ESO may be a threat, in the west. GW2 will launch in China this summer so no threat really.
What do you people mean GW2 had no threat from competitors so far? Gw2 had to deal with:
Tera, Swtor, The secret world, neverwinter, FFXIV, the age of wushu, defiance, probably others. There will always be competition and there will always be a nice exciting new MMO right around the corner.
Gw2 doesnt have a subscription and thats a big plus. IT means if you enjoy a new MMO there is no need to give Gw2 up entirely. Cut back sure but drop it entirely? no need if you enjoy it and if you dont enjoy it, why would you need to wait for a new release to stop playing? its not like Gw2 is the only mmo on the market right now!
Personally I dont think this is an issue of much consequence if any at all!
Mb AvA in ESO on a huge map with copy-pasted keeps will be nice, but i could barely make myself play through starting pve stuff for a day before i turned off this clunky crap which zenimax calls a game.

Or make the impossible update….
Remove overflows, and start adding sandbox elements to gw2, i would bet LS design would be way better over time and easier to design or deploy.
-Random minor dragon ivading pve zone, this would make a air batle and ground group battle, big guilds would have a chance to craft/spawn a fully controlled airship to fight the dragon, while small guild would have lesser flying machines(both hard to get, possible repairs and hangar storage).
- Pve camp supply system and city resource to fix stuff if broken, also teach pve players to fix stuff in WVW.
New WvW map design bigger castles and towers, each map zone is controled by is main castle and helps supply growth in PVE storage depot.
LS could bring GVG tournaments.
I hope NCsoft makes something usefull for GW2 the game atm is only deployment of dps zergs race over time, this is the state of the game.

Not really, just the content isn’t engaging at all AND combat and animations are horrible.

So you think he has unrealistically high expectations because of the quantity of games he has played?
Zenimax is to blame for releasing a game that does not meet the usual high Bethesda standard. ESO is going to be seen as an utter disaster several months after release, mark my words.
1. Half your recommended games are single player. Single player games release daily. Just drop by on steam! And in no way shape or form due to influence the MMO player base.
2. Both Wildstar and ESO are launching with a sub fee.
3. Played ESO. Did not like it. It’s bleak, empty, has soft target assist and doesn’t feel like an ES game at all. Some people will like it, but the whole GW2 population won’t just suddenly switch games.

Um what? The combat here is more engaging than most other games, if anything that’s probably the best aspect of this game. Don’t even get me started on animations combat wise in other games, heck games like FF14 don’t even show your missiles (arrows, spells) flying through the air. All you see is a splash on the enemy, now that’s horrible animations right there.

That might be true for GW1 but that’s not the case of GW2 anymore. Less players → less people that are likely going to purchase something from the gemstore and let’s be honest the gemstore isn’t a small sidefeature of the game anymore it is an extremely huge part of the game, it’s the most updated part of the game and A.Net seems to try to push it as much as they can.

The demise of ESO is its RPG brothers whose combat system is superior. No matter how different the combat system is MMO wise people wanted Elder Scrolls RPG online and Zenimax failed to deliver. Combat feels nothing like the RPG ones – it’s slow, clunky, your main attacks have soft targeting (seriously, why? Tera did just fine with no aim assist) and all extra abilities lock on. It is really not fun.

I have both Oblivion and Skyrym and not once even bothered to think about looking at ESO, I guess the fact another company was making it sent me alarm bells right off the bat. I guess it’s a shame for all the true fans of the series but I guess a plus for us.
