A few months ago, I contributed to get my buddies into GW2, just so they could try it out. It ultimately wasn’t the game for them (because no-holy-trinity-qq). But there was a rather stark observation that was made to me, and it hit me like a truck when I heard it.

There aren’t enough monsters in the game.

Worse still, they all look alike. (Except maybe moas, the rainbow-colored dorks :P)

So, even if you went to a different zone, you were fighting, more or less, the same monsters all over. As a helpful tip to keep things interesting, ANet should consider making their encounters feel more different from zone to zone.

Thoughts?

Many alts; handle it!

I agree. The only difference is slight color variation and very few monsters are exclusive to a region. As they expand things such as the Shiverpeaks and Ascalon it would be nice to see some new region exclusive species and monsters. It would make the world feel bigger and give each area it’s own special feel.

I’m only here because sometimes I just like to watch things burn.

I also agree. I’m pretty underwhelmed at this point of the lack of monster variety. Just off the top of my head let me see how many I can name:

Moa
Boar
Oakhearts
Troll
Bat
Deer
Marmox
Skale
Skelk
Drake
Barracuda
Shrimp
Shark
Jellyfish
Karka
Bad humans
Bad Asura
Bad Charr
Bad Norn
Bad Sylvari
Risen (which has a risen version of everything pretty much)
Griffon
Skritt
Hylek
Giant
Wurm
Dragon
Ghosts
Robot/Golems
Harpy
Destroyers
Dredge
Crabs
Wolves
Panthers/big cats
Gorillas
Minotaurs
Mechanized Creatures
Watchwork Creatures
Krait
Toxic krait/sylvari
Windriders

I’m tired of trying to picture each zone now, but this hits a good chunk of them. It actually seems like a long list but really it isn’t when you consider how large the world actually is.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

Def agree with this. Also there are some monsters that you do not see too often, they may only appear in one or two maps and I think that’s a crime. I can’t remember what they are called but I think one is sort of like a mini dinosaur. We need more dinosaur type creatures! Give us a T-Rex now that would be scary-cool.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

GW2 needs finally a real good designed Day/Night System.
This would be a first step towards a far more interesting good flora and fauna, especially the fauna in this game.

But GW2 could also need a more mature and grim dark selection of new monsters, that really do look dangerous and creepy, but also should be more of a kind of epic scale. Simply said.. more larger monsters that are at least of the size of oakhearts.

And no to Dinosaurs.. this is Guild Wars.. .not Jurassic Park..if you want dinosaus, go play Jurassic Park.. the Raptors are already enough …

However, there are also Monsters of GW1, that need to find back their ways into GW2

  • HYDRAS (real Hydras, with 9 Heads, go look at Games like Dragons Dogma)
  • SEEDS (more Plant Enemies, other then only Oakhearts)
  • SKELLETONS (for the nights)
  • GARGOYLES
  • DRYDERS
  • SMOKE PHANTOMS
  • DREAM RIDERS
  • PORTAL WRAITHS
  • TITANS
  • SCARABS
  • SPECTRAL VAETTIRS
  • MANDRAGORS
  • INCUBI/ SUCCUBI
  • BONE DRAGONS
  • BONE HOUNDS
  • SENSALI TENGU (as the tribe of Tengus that would be the antagonists if Tengus would become playable)

More monsters in geenral would be always good.
Always mroe new species over monster reskins.
Putting a game full of monster reskins only is very uncreative.
A good game that feels full of life will ensure that it will have as many different monster species as possible.

If we also see then again Mursaat/Margonites, that would be also awesome.

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

I miss the Forgotten. They’re cooler than Krait.

It’s a pretty long list considering it’s just using monsters from the top of your head. I skimmed the list and immediately thought of several you were missing: spiders, imps, mosquitoes, grubs, ogres, oozes, the different types of elementals, unique dragon minions like eye of zhaitan or icebroods. There’s probably a lot more too.

I think the OPs problem is that there are a lot of mobs that are the same throughout a bunch of zones, however, overall I feel like there is a good amount of monster models.
