Hello,

As far as I know, there are currently three online statuses a player can choose from: offline, away and online. I would like to suggest that a new status, “restricted”, be created. A player in the “restricted” status would be seen offline by anyone not belonging to his active guild, group or friends list. In other words, this status would let you play with acquaintances, while preventing unknown people from interacting with you.

My main reason for this change – others could provide different reasons – is the attitude of some players. I play the game a lot, because I think it’s a great game, and I really enjoy it. However, not a single day passes by without me reading insults on the screen, directed either at me or other players, for the game modes I’m currently doing (hotjoin PvP and EotM). This is really exacerbated in hotjoin PvP, where stomping, running a condition build, running a berserker build, running a meta build, running a non-meta build, bringing help to even fights, winning outnumbered fights, running away from outnumbered fights, using certain skills or professions, can bring you some violent reaction from opponents.

I’ve given up on my expectations – I do not expect the GW2 players to exhibit basic courtesy or politeness anymore. And I’m tired of reporting/blocking several players a day. What I want is to not be exposed anymore to the jeers of rude persons, as they not only considerably spoil the pleasure I have in playing the game, but also hurt my feelings as a human being, as the respect of other people has since long become a core of my moral values.

I’ve met a few nice people in the game, which have now become friends. I’m aware that using a new “restricted” mode would prevent me from making such new encounters, simply letting me cultivate the ones I have, or getting to know new people by proper introductions. This is something I’m however ready to accept, given the increased hate seen in the game in the latest months. So, I humbly beg ArenaNet: please provide this feature. I do not intend to use it systematically, and it’d really increase my gaming experience.

Kind regards.

Just switch certain channels off. Sadly even with “Restricted” people would still see your character and could use /say and you’d still see the speech bubble so there is no way around this one without a lot of work. I just don’t see ANet supporting something that restricts communication within a game that is highly dependent on it.

Sorry, I think you may need to just be more selective with which channels you view and perhaps just don;t take any notice of the insults.

I don’t wish to point fingers here, but it sounds to me like you are getting a great deal of hostility in the game and I have to wonder, are you doing anything to antagonise people? even if it’s just in your actions as apposed to words.

You can turn off “See Chat Bubble” option in the world. Also you can customize your Chats any way you like and there are many options including turning off Whispers etc. It’s not a perfect solution but it works really well for me when I am tired of reading tired drivel from the masses.

Hello Coopziana and Paradox,

Thank you for your suggestions. I’ll try to customize the chat settings more appropriately.

@Coopziana: you make a fair point in suggesting that I might be behaving in a manner attracting hostility. One often blames others before oneself, and I’m not above that. But honestly, I wouldn’t know what it is that does it. This is disheartening

Regards.

EDIT: Also, while I do get insulted regularly when playing hotjoins (and this hurts), my point really has to do with insulting in general – including other people than myself. I’ll definitely try adjusting the chat settings, but if I’m to ignore chat categories, then I’d rather have it done with a specific “restricted” status, so that friends can still whisper me.
