I’ve been playing WoW casually since right before TBC, and I’ve tried a few other MMORPGs through the years trying to find a game that could really replace WoW for me. None of the others could do it because they simply felt too much like WoW. What’s the point of quitting WoW to play Asian-WoW? Star Wars-WoW? Action-WoW? Etc.

But this game’s style feels pretty unique to me. I’ve yet to enter an instance, and I love these events. I feel like I’ve interacted with players here more in 21 levels than the entire endgame of the Cataclysm expansion. I’m really happy.

And no sub fee? How do I support this game? I feel almost guilty having all this fun without paying monthly for it

Very glad to see people who are having fun!

The Personal Story and Dungeons are instances, pretty much everything else happens out there in the open.

If you wish to give the game money, you can buy gems and spend them at Black Lion. But, you know, you just did support the game. Among all the complaints and negative posts, someone saying they are having fun is a fresh breeze and you never know, it may lead to a new person entering the game.

(Very soon, if not even before I have typed this, someone will probably come and say that you won’t be having fun in a month or once you hit lvl 80. It depends on you and what you like. I’m having fun with over 1200 hrs played and with three lvl 80 as well as three younger characters.)

Welcome! I like to read happy posts like this. Just ignore people who tell you why things are wrong/bad, and make those decisions for yourself
But like the above guys said, gem store is the way to ‘support’ anet, through micro transactions. I don’t use it much, but I’m planning to get two more character slots to even them out

well this game seems to meet all of the criteria that made me love playing wow, but it does them in really refreshing ways for me, i plan on transferring to the RP server, although its always full it seems, does it cost money to do that?

Depending on your playing times, you might come to Piken Square (the European RP server). If you do, give me a shout! Or even if not, you can still contact me. I like making new friends.

You already bought it, you paid them. That’s their business model.

Anyway, you;ll soon see once you level your toon there are cracks in the design all over this game. Its not apparent right away, but this game cannot hold your attention like WoW did for so long.

Had to be at least one.

@OP: I played WoW for 6 1/2 years myself. This game is very different in most ways, and many people see that as an inherent flaw and cannot handle it. The key to enjoying this game is to just take your time and not worry about rushing to endgame, and then when you’re capped rushing to gear up; those things have little place here. If you do that, and spread your overall time out between leveling alts, WvW, instances, and spvp, there is plenty to do in this game. I haven’t even done most of the instances and I still have 570 hours clocked in so far. There have been maybe 2-3 other games that I’ve gotten as much or more playtime out of for $60.00, so there isn’t a lack of things to do, there just isn’t an intense focus on endgame raiding and gear progression like other mmos, so people hit 80 and think there isn’t a kitten thing to do. And yes, stay away from the forums; as this game has just about the most dedicated whiner/troll/hater following of ANY game ever. Many are bitter it isn’t WoW in new clothes, or Guild Wars 1 2.0. The rest are impatient and act like no newish mmo ever had flaws, or they ever had to wait for fixes before.

Brotip: Take your time when you level, do not rush. I know rushing to the max level to do the great stuff is something everyone wants to do, but att this point of time it’s not that much to do just yet. Of course there are things to do, in my opinion more stuff to do than in World of Warcraft, since World of Warcraft is mainly about running dungeons and raids. Guild Wars 2 don’t got that kind of endgame though.

So take your time, and do not rush. Otherwise, rush to all your heart’s content

Glad to see you’re enjoying the game! Don’t worry about supporting them just yet. $60 = 3 months of a sub, so take that time to see if you really want to keep playing this game for a while. It’s a lot of fun, but the endgame isn’t fully in just yet, so you might want to take a break at some point. Beauty of no sub is that month-long breaks don’t cost anything!

You already bought it, you paid them. That’s their business model.

Eh, depends on what s/he’s looking for. I’m going to play this game for a long time, because it’s the cooperative, low-key themepark MMO I was looking for, with economic play on the side. Other players are looking for a hard-core raid experience, or a realistic open-world experience, or a dramatic and engaging storyline. Those thing’s aren’t necessarily what GW2 does well. Given that OP is celebrating not being in an instance yet, I don’t think hard-core raiding is where their heart is.

EDIT: Take your time leveling. Exploring is really key to this game – not just the game world, but also exploring how the interface works, how your class(es) work, how you like to play, how the economy works. It’s a great journey, and people who are in a hurry for it to be over miss out on stuff.

Also, if you really want to buy something with gems, minipets are pretty cute.

OP, exploring is amazing in this game. Look behind waterfalls and bushes, there are whole zones tucked away in the most unpredictable places!

OP, this game is outright amazing, I have been playing it since the beta and I have to say, this game is worth the 60 bucks. It has thousands and thousands of hours worth of content, combat is great, not to mention having a personal story (Which is rare to see in MMOs these days) and lastly, it has a friendly and funny community

P.S. WvWvW is great

I am also a WoW expatriate and love many aspects of GW2’s unique take on the MMO. I think they have succeeded with many aspects of the game that help create a helpful and friendly in-game culture. To the extent that they can avoid the features that shaped WoW’s grinding culture (cf. FotM) I believe they will have continued success.

This. The unique gameplay of GW2 comes from levels 1-80. That’s where the most fun is. Endgame starts to look a lot like other games these days, but from 1-80 you’ll get an amazing experience that really showcases the hard work that was put into this game. Take your time. And if you don’t like endgame, maybe make an alt.

This is exactly my sentiment OP, hopefully you’ll enjoy what it has to offer pre-max level. Once you reach level 80 however you’ll notice a huge difference a massive grind for very little return and a push toward the gem-gold conversion to stay competative. That is in fact the majority of the complaints in this game so far, that and the sudden focus on a single dungeon.

The only thing grindy is going for a legendary, they designed it that way for people that wanted to put in a thousand hours to get a really rare item.

Otherwise gearing your character is very easy, much easier than pay to play games like WoW where they need to stre-e-e-e-tch out that payment plan.

Not anymore it’s not, ever since Nov 16th there’s a very large number of people who no longer get gear or the appropriate T6 mats to craft anymore all due to DR, dungeon-focused-RNG, lower drop rates, and completely useless rewards from large meta events. to claim everything is fine is irresponsible. I agree I didn’t like the stretch of wow either but GW2 is no longer GW2 compared to it’s first month.

Thanks for all the great responses everyone! I’ve figured that this game is about being a great RPG, the journey is on the way to max level, and that by itself is a great feat, but ultimately its getting there that’s the meat of the experience. I honestly don’t have a problem with grinding, I’ve played D3 for around 200 hours on a single character and still like playing it just to murder more endless waves of demons.

D3 is a game that really embodies exactly all of the problems that I saw y’all list. Fortunately none of those things really bother me =)

Some people are saying this game is difficult in some areas as well, like “impossibly difficult!” but I seriously doubt that. I beat Dark Souls! I can handle ANYTHING this game can throw at me.

What I love most about this game is that there’s so many people to play with, we are all out in the open and no one is isolated because of instances. The city I’ve been in was MASSIVE, and although I was kind of dissapointed that there wasn’t any indoor areas (that I saw) I’m sure there are one or two that I’ll be able to find. I’ve been talking to more people on this game in a week than I’ve talked to in WoW in a year, so I’m really happy that this game doesn’t seem to be so depersonalized like WoW is.

Got to love the double standards that constantly get applied in threads like this one.
“The game is great, ignore anyone who says anything negative, they just thrive on complaining, these forums are poison, everyone is so full of complaints… huzzah, let’s all say something positive in a huddle here!”
Gods forbid you let new players discover that the reasons for the complaints are valid; and people like Tigirius have come in here to point this out to them, in an effort to provide parity and an even point of view for someone who might be seeking such.
Funny how you are all allowed to be as negative as you like about the elephant in the MMO room, constantly lambasting this game over World of Warcraft, but woe betide anyone that voices criticism at your shiny new game here, even if said criticisms are clearly justified in regard to the seriously skewed design decisions that have been implemented since the developmental focus shift in the betas.
People coming into this game since Christmas will likely have little clue about how much they are being hindered in game to fulfill the gem drive. They have a right to know about what has happened.

Unfortunately, they’ll figure it out for themselves soon enough. This forum isn’t the only one filled with “complainers”. Fan forums, 3rd party forums… eventually it gets hard to explain away.

It’s a shame, too, because GW2 really is a good game. The amount of effort into making the player feel immersed is amazing. The cities are gigantic. The aesthetics and graphics are gorgeous. The music is absolutely beautiful (go google “Fear Not This Night”). It’s just being driven off course by someone in Arenanet who has lost a lot of focus on what this series was meant to be.

This is all de ja vu. For anyone who missed what Star Wars Galaxies forums looked like… here’s your chance to see. :-\

…It’s a shame, too, because GW2 really is a good game.

That’s the bunny right there. The realisation of Tyria revisited, as it moves forward into an even more tumultuous future, is just staggering. I have always loved the setting of this world, the peoples and their plight, and the sheer amount of effort that has been put into sculpting such an astounding land is just breath-taking.
But the jarring insertion of the new business model directors, and the rapid-fire design reversals they immediately actualised, has led us here, to the sad reality of what is going to be done – the shift of focus away from immersion and fulfillment of promise into the dreadfully bland world of economics.
“Mountains out of molehills”, the white knights proclaim. The game is just the same.
But every tale gone awry has a beginning – a little twist of direction here is as good an indicator as you will get of where the new management is leading.

You’re not the only one OP – this is my first MMO and am loving the hell outta it!

It’s nothing like any game I have played before…it’s so deep and rich in playstyles and atmosphere sometimes I’m dumbstruck as to what I should do.

I’ve been playing since launch, and kept making new characters to try them all. Because of this, my main is only level 36, so I’m nowhere near end-game yet. Just taking my time and have found a decent friendly guild who give me the items they don’t need anymore hehe.

Enjoy yourself!

I have Guild Wars 1 and together with Guild Wars 2 – two games that are in a class on their own. Easy to learn, play, and maintain (my complaints are mainly about lag – which I am very hopeful will be fixed).

I hope to see your avatars around.
