New player, looking for fun group.
I’m not new to MMOs, and definitely not new to the action oriented type of MMOs so it’s not like I’m gonna suck at it.
Let us know how much that prior experience helps you much here The game plays very differently to what you might have experienced in the past. Your health can and will drop very fast in many instances. Sometimes even one shot you. Just remember to not get frustrated and dodge things as best as you can. I’ll be online later tonight for my graveyard shift if you’re planning a late night session in case you have any questions on the fly.
Good luck!
I’m always happy to help new players but I’m more of a PvE’er than a PvPer. What kind of stuff do you plan no doing in game.
If you’re looking for a casual group, I’m your guy. If you’re looking for competitive player vs player…probably not. lol
Get used to dodge rolling.
I do more of the PvE stuff myself. Dodge rolling isn’t a problem, but won’t blocking also be possible? I’ll be playing a warrior and probably a sword and shield in my main weapon set. I’m not really into PvP stuff, never really been my thing. I’m more into co-operative play. Also, probably won’t be on until after noonish.
You won’t be able to constantly block, most of damage evasion comes from dodging.
Well, I think I can handle dodging.
The common mentality in this game for a while now is that the best defense is a good offence. People usually stack as much damage as possible and rely on reflexes to keep them alive. In that kind of environment, sword and board might not be the most optimal. Remember, no tanks. Which means damage mitigation is going to be generally lacking, but not impossible. A shield really acts more as a control offhand weapon then it would as some kind of damage sponge. The blocking ability has generally such a long cooldown that it is not something to really rely on.
Overall though, play what you like the most. Don’t let others dictate how you should enjoy the game, but of course; it never hurts to learn from the experience of other players so that you won’t repeat their mistakes.
edit: Sent you some starting cash and some bags in your mailbox. I suggest you keep your gear updated to your level at least every 10 levels and no higher than green quality. At least for 1-79

I just got the game and got it installed. I haven’t started a character yet because I don’t know which server to pick. I live in America, so I’ll obviously want to pick an American server.
Here is a list of WvW server rankings. The higher ranked servers are usually more active and more populated than the lower ranked. However, the queue for WvW and overflow for PvE times in the higher raked servers is much higher/longer.

I appreciate that. But why wouldn’t I want to go above green equipment?

I don’t think I’ll ever do any WvW events. And I was kinda figuring on a lower population server just to cut down on lag. My rig ain’t the best, but I’m pretty sure it’s got the minimum system requirements covered.

Just because it’s kind of a waste of money to pay that much for leveling gear. But I wouldn’t worry to much about gear already.
I think I’m gonna go ahead and start my character on the Blackgate server. If anyone would like to join me, just let me know.
I actually started on the Darkhaven server. I hope no one started a new character on Blackgate.

Most of the game you can level up in blues and that’s playing solo.
I plan about ten or so levels ahead and just use buy orders on the Black Lion Trading Post to pick up armor trinkets and weapons for less coin. Using buy orders might take a day or so to get your purchase, but it can save you a ton.
Learn what levels you can buy trinkets for lowest prices while leveling up.
This is what I do and I try to use a lot of what I loot from playing the game while leveling, but it just seems that you level so fast and can do everything pretty much in blues… Sometimes i will splurge and equip/buy better gear when I want to run a dungeon that just came available as I am leveling up…
I personally find greens a fair bit more ideal since the quality of gear takes kind of an important role in the formula with how many stats you are aloud to keep in lower level maps. It’s just a quality of life thing for me.
Also, yes. Get used to buy orders fast. Patience does pay off in the long run.
Okay. Thanks for the advice. As I said, my character is on the Darkhaven server, name is Xander Draxx. Anyone that would like to group up, just send a message or friend request. I’ll probably be on sometime tonight.
