don’t skimp on toughness even if you only equip 2-3 gear parts , it’ll help you more than you know since you don’t know the content yet.
Wiki where your Traits are then you can plan on exploring towards that direction and get the traits you want , two birds one stone the fun of exploring while you get a trait you’d like.

if you open the map , and highlight the middle where the name of the area is it shows the Area compelete totals , 14/25 hearts ect 4/11 way points ect ect .
i did what i could without wiki but on those last 1-3 points of intrest or vistas , i had to go wiki for a quick boost.
Just keep on exploring for a while and really enjoy yourself. I enjoy when new players have a good time.
Don’t try to trade directly with other players, use the Trading Post. Yes, it has fees to it, but it’s the only safe way to trade in this game. If you get scammed and report it, the scammer may be punished, but you will NOT get your money/items back. EVER.
Any emails you get in-game that say they’re from another player are just that. No matter what the text of the message may say, it’s not from ANet and don’t follow any links they may give.
Get in the habit of using food/consumable buffs. Even the cheap ones can give bonus EXP, and that adds up.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Good suggestions above! Also…take your time. There is no rush. While not everyone will agree with me, there is something exciting, fun, and even challenging in every zone at every level. I still find enjoyment leveling and mapping (after 12 characters leveled to 80). There is a lot to enjoy in this game…take advantage of it.
Do any events you come across, this is your main source of XP.
Salvage using the cheap salvage kit.
When you eventually hit 80, you can get easy exotics with karma at the temple vendors. Use the wiki to find out who has what, or be adventurous and discover on your own!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help or help in events. Shift clicking a point of interest (PoI) or way point will guide people better
Take a look at the stickies in Players Helping Players. There’s one that is page after page of helpful information, tips, and tricks.
Newbie tips? Here goes!
Make use of the Collectibles bank. At the top-right of your inventory is a gear icon, clicking it opens up several options, including the Deposit All Collectibles option. Clicking on that will send all crafting materials in your inventory to your Collectibles bank, a special section of your bank that will hold 250 of each different crafting material in the game. You’ll have access to all materials in your Collectibles bank whenever you go to craft. This should greatly free up your inventory space, allow you to clear room while adventuring (you can Deposit from anywhere), and keep you from needing to use your actual limited bank spaces on materials you might someday need.
As mentioned above, dodging is vital. Practice it now even if you don’t feel you need to, because eventually you will. Practice normal movement and positioning during fights, too. Using spiders as a common enemy type, you can avoid all attacks from normal spider enemies simply by circling around them while you’re hitting them. Their attacks are slow and don’t lock on, so as long as you end up behind them before their bite or poison spit comes out, the attack will miss automatically even without you having to ‘dodge’. This is not true for every creature in the game, but learning what attacks you can avoid simply by moving, and what attacks need an actual endurance-spending dodge, will help you greatly in tougher fights later on.
Make sure you try out all the different weapons available to your class. With your weapon swap (assuming you’re not an Elementalist or Engineer), try to keep one melee weapon set and one ranged weapon set. Melee weapons generally do more damage than ranged weapons, but there are going to be tougher creatures you run into that you won’t want to go toe to toe with, so having the ranged set to swap to will help greatly.
Make use of the Trading Post! Push O to access it, and click the scales icon on the left to head there from the gem store. You can buy and sell equipment and other things there. If you’re just not getting luck with having an item for a given equipment slot drop, you can buy something from the Trading Post to fill it up. As well, you can usually find a better offer from a player for a piece of equipment you want to sell than you’d get from an NPC vendor, so consider selling your extra/unwanted gear on the Trading Post instead. Like Deposit All Collectibles, you can sell things on the Trading Post from anywhere, so it can help clear your inventory while you’re out in the field.
Pick up a salvage kit, too. Salvage kits let you turn equipment or salvage item drops into crafting materials, which are often more valuable than the equipment itself. This is why players will be buying equipment on the Trading Post, even lower level equipment, for more than the NPCs would pay. Figure out which gear you’d rather salvage for crafting materials (or to resell those crafting materials on the TP) and which gear you’d just rather sell to other players instead. If you’re working on your Leatherworking craft, you might want to salvage your medium armour drops for leather pieces you can use to craft with. If you aren’t a light armour class, you can earn good money by salvaging/selling valuable light armour pieces as cloth tends to be more expensive than metal or leather. And so on. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the Trading Post soon enough.
Don’t be afraid to spend your Karma as you level at Karma vendors. There’s nothing wrong with picking up usable equipment for your level without spending any coin whatsoever. As you gain levels you’ll earn more Karma, so whatever you’re spending now isn’t terribly meaningful in the long run.

We’ve got a great Information for New Players wiki on our reddit

I got my cooking up to lvl 36 and all the food gives some xp boosts which is awesome
Sell everything you find, that you can’t use. Upgrade equipment, with a specific trait you desire, as you level. Do all the heart quests and don’t leave a zone until you’ve mapped everything.
Repeat this for all the low-level areas.
with the new player experience they put into the game you wont see how much you got left on map complete just yet i think you should get that ability at around level 20
Edit
Just keep doing hearts in new area untill you can see the map/world complete and go back if you missed something you will still get a chance for lvl aproprate gear from low level mobs
First, post a question like this in the Player Helping Player section.
Second, there is a sticky thread there on tips.
Best tip I have. Critters that are off the beaten path, that have been hanging around for a while unmolested by players, have a major XP bonus on them. So while staying in an area that’s level appropriate, step off the obvious path and seek critters away from the path.

I just started playing a few days ago, and I’ve been in love with the game. I’ve played it most of my free time, though sadly isn’t more than about an hour a day (AIT student in the Army)
I’m just wondering if anyone has some tips, tricks, or some general information they’d like to share with me to help me get started. I’m level 17, so I know about the basics and stuff like that.
Thanks in advance
Explore, have fun and remember dodge. Feel free to add me if you wish i am willing to give any information i can.
Hi, since you are new and would be low on gold/silver. Not sure if you already know this. Make use of the WvW options such as going to Obsidian Sanctum to get to Lions Arch. You’ll save a fair bit of silver that way.
Also keep an eye on this link just incase you happen to be on a map that’s having a world boss. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_boss
Most of all, have fun

I would be I heard it takes a few hours just to join a WvW event, and I’m in AIT for the army, so I don’t have hours of free time. I’m lucky if I get an hour a day for free time :/

You can call up the WvW menu and use it to teleport to the Obsidian Sanctum from anywhere. When you arrive, you’ll be right next to a gate that takes you to Lion’s Arch. Obsidian Sanctum is a PvP jumping puzzle, there’s rarely many people there so there’s hardly ever a wait to get into that zone. You can do pretty much the same by entering the SPvP area, the Heart of the Mists.
I actually suggest using the Heart of the Mists, instead. There’s a vendor and bank access right there, and if you call up the PvP menu again, you’ll see that the option to enter the zone has become an exit option. If you use this instead of the Lion’s Arch portal, it will take you back to where you just were. Very handy if you just need to empty your inventory.
[edit] And there’s no need to PvP to do either of these.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Did they shut down the LA portal from the PvP lobby? That works too after you get past the minor tutorial.
