New profession?
Just to compare with 2 other games that I played, Wow and Aion, a new class/profession was released 4 to 5 years after launch… so I wouldn’t consider the company being late from any schedule….
Blizzard puts out entire expansions about every 2-3 years lol and Aion is trash.
There was this company named anet that used to put out not just new professions but whole new campaigns, like, once a year or even less! Sigh. Those were the days. We’ll never see their like again.

Pssst.
Guild Wars 1 had two new classes one year after release.
Then another two new classes six months from that.
So from the Guild Wars schedule (which is the only relevant schedule), they’re late. By a lot.
Totally agree, it would be nice to see something NEW, with characters, classes, professions, races whatever you call it!
This is a recurring topic that has been floating around for ages, not that I disagree but I seriously doubt your post will make any difference.
it means THEY got me for " neg criticism in clever disguise".
Know that it has been fun and I love ya all.
Anet never set the expectation of new professions. Why would any reasonable person complain about it? Oh right.

From Wikipedia:
Guild Wars is a competitive online role-playing game series developed by ArenaNet and published by NCsoft.
In Guild Wars, ArenaNet put out an expansion with 2 new classes in 1 year, and a second with 2 more new classes in 6 months from that.
So yes, they did set an expectation of swift expansions and profession additions.
Did they say they would? No.
Was it even the same team as this? Probably not, I don’t know.
But the company did, in fact, set expectations through prior work.
That quote from Wiki says nothing about expansions OR professions in GW2. Your inference that GW2 will have them because GW1 has no logical relationship. GW2 is not GW1. Just because they are similar in many regards does not mean that we can expect GW2 to have the same things GW1 did. The connection you made is a fail.

I didn’t say the quote from Wikipedia mentioned expansions or professions. I was pointing out that Guild Wars was made by ArenaNet. The same company that makes Guild Wars 2.
By putting out the expansions and new professions so quickly, ArenaNet set an expectation of quick, progressive work with lots of new things to keep players interested. People who liked that about Guild Wars would logically expect it to be in Guild Wars 2 and would buy the next game under that expectation.
People look at the past performance of a company to base future expectations from that same company all the time. In fact, that judgment is the whole basis for repeat customers.
The connection I made is perfectly valid.
They didn’t have to say they’d add new professions. They already set a standard of expansion years ago. They didn’t adhere to that standard, but you can’t blame people for expecting SOMETHING new after 2 years when they already set a standard for a year and/or less.
Again, just because the same company made GW1 and GW2 doesn’t set any expectation for what we will see in GW2 based on what is in GW1. That’s what we are talking about here yes?

It does, though. If a company does something one way, people expect them to continue to do it the same way.
That’s the way the world works.
Sometimes companies don’t follow through on that expectation (or don’t plan to), but that doesn’t mean they didn’t set the bar in the first place.
That’s far too assuming. That’s why it’s nonsense. People assuming GW2 will work like GW1 is not Anet setting expectations on how GW2 will work. That’s peoples’ imaginations working overtime to justify things they want to see ingame.
In fact, if after 2 years of release people are still thinking that GW2 works or should work like GW1, they should pull their head out into the sunshine. Anet has made no such indication for new professions in GW2 that I have seen. If you have some information that indicates otherwise. please post it. I would be interested in seeing it.

It’s simple for a business.
Both games were made under the same company, they set their standard years ago with releasing great content to please their consumers.
The company had a certain passion for releasing new content in GW1. It doesn’t appear to be the same here. By new content I do mean expansions similar in importance as Factions, NightFall, and Eye of the North.
Same team or not, it is still the same company. Which means, yes, the same expectations.
I suppose you’re just as upset at BMW for making cars now instead of bomber planes? Your self-established expectations are silly and, very early in GW2’s history, they explicitly stated that they weren’t interested in persuing the typical ‘expansion model’. Your own expectations are a product of your own imagination/desire. Mmkay…

I just can’t see them really adding anything other profession to the game at this point. Not only are the ones that currently exist cover a large number of archetypes, but if they don’t want additional economy strains (look at the price of differing weapons and the value of cloth against metal/leather) then the next profession would probably have to be an additional heavy (most likely with medium health pool, if it is better at any aspect of the game than warrior or guardian then either subsection of the community will lose their skritt over it.)
Then they would have to balance that new profession with all it’s skills for conquest pvp, all the while not being seen as power creep (as it feels to me that the original designers/philosophies for the profession are not same) and any new profession could have all the collected knowledge of what worked and didn’t work up to the point of it being released.
Same team or not, it is still the same company. Which means, yes, the same expectations.
Then you’re expectations are not based on anything but an assumption that GW2 should be GW1 with improved graphics. Obviously, that’s not the case as can easily be observed after 2 years of playing GW2 and experience in GW1 … your expectations are not aligned with reality, nor are they linked to any explicit plans Anet has indicated for how GW2 will evolve.
In short, you’ve simply convinced yourself we should have stuff GW1 had based on similarities you see between the two games. That’s not an expectation Anet has set, it’s simply coincidental.
My Toyota doesn’t work like my Lexus, but it’s the same company as well. Different brand, different expectations. Same here.

You’re constantly trying to force the argument that GW1 and GW2 are being compared to each other, when that is not the case. Not for me anyways.
And BMW is still providing great service to their consumers, if not better.
ANyways, back to the OP. I wouldn’t get your hopes up for a designated healer anytime soon though. It’s already been said that having a healer most likely is not going to happen. Closest to healer you can get is a Cleric Elementalist unfortunately.

They were being compared to each other … read the thread.
Are you implying that Anet isn’t providing great service to its customers because we haven’t had new professions in two years? I’m waiting with baited breathe to hear the logic behind that.

You’re both really bad at proposing analogous examples.
Guild Wars 2 is not a different brand from Guild Wars 1.
Guild Wars 2 is also not a completely different style of product from Guild Wars 1.
A better comparison, if you wanted to use cars for some reason, would be if a low-tier Toyota was branded as the next Lexus. Because it’s under the name Lexus (Guild Wars), you’d expect the same quality.
A more accurate comparison, staying in at least the same line of products, would be if people who got Diablo 3 were expecting it to be as good as Diablo 2. Or people who liked Perfect Dark were expecting good things from Perfect Dark Zero. People who liked FFX definitely weren’t expecting FFX-2.
I mean, I could come up with a whole list of games where people expect a certain standard of quality due to past performance just to have it dashed in a sequel, but I don’t think I need to.
Go to any forum where they discuss Final Fantasy and ask “when did they ruin the series” and despite that the answers will be different, you will quite clearly get answers saying when it was “ruined”. And why was it “ruined”? Because they didn’t meet expectations established by previous performance, be it through changes in game mechanics or, in some cases, exploration and other such things.
Are you implying that Anet isn’t providing great service to its customers because we haven’t had new professions in two years?
They’re not providing great service to their customers for a plethora of reasons. Lack of new professions falls under the category of “nothing fresh to the table”. MMOs need to stay fresh, otherwise they stagnate and die.
So, I am going to recenter this discussion away from whether or not Guild Wars 1 has anything to do with Guild Wars 2 and say that they really need to add new professions. The only way I could continue doing dungeons or WvW was by doing it with a different profession. Well, I have gone through them all. For some people, walking around and enjoying the pixelated roses is enough. Not for me. Not for the vast majority of players. I hope they bring back Ritualists and Dervish.
Good story …. Anet has not set the expectation that we would see new professions in GW2, especially not when players invent those expectations based on GW1 content. Expecting similar performance is not the same as expecting similar content across the two games. GW2 is not GW1 in a new dress. It’s nonsense to complain we haven’t seen new professions in the game after 2 years its release with that premise. New professions is not the only way to ensure ‘fresh’ keeps coming to the table in GW2.
I won’t rehash what I think about new professions but I will keep it short; I don’t think there are any interesting concepts available that a new profession would bring to the table that isn’t already being done. I think that’s part of the problems we have with some of the professions already … and people want more. It’s lipstick on a pig.

Thanks for changing my mind. I thought the content in the game was old and stale. You have clearly and logically explained to me why I am actually having fun. Thanks mister!
No problem. I’m certainly happy to help people realize they are asking for solutions that won’t solve their problems in the first place. More professions in GW2 doesn’t necessarily address your concern with your satisfaction in the game.

What would?
For all these demands of “We need new professions!”, I don’t see much to it other than hollow desires. How about some ideas if you’d like for you or your aspirations to be taken seriously? “Hey, kitten you Anet because we want a new thing!”, is not going to get far.
Yes Gw1 had expansions and added new professions and in quite rapid succession. Each ‘expansion’ was actually a stand alone game with professions added in the context of the new continents. The only true expansion as Eye of the North which added no new professions but, instead, I good number of new skills.
GW1 Prophecies only started with 6 profession. Then Factions added two and Nightfalls another two for grand total of 10 professions provided you had all three campaigns on your account. The amount of content in the first three games really wasn’t that vast. They were story driven with little else in the zones to actually do as you advanced through the campaigns. The only expansion made a huge leap in what was lacking in these aspects a few years down the road though. It was also a ‘standard trinity’ game which imposed it’s own restrictions. Admittedly this was good but still a pseudo form of diversity, but one thing the ’daul profession system did do for diversity, outside the millions of possible party compositions was allow teams to min/max. Even to the point where groups would run full DPS setups with heals and damage mitigation coming from secondary roles of certain people in the group as we learned better synergy and tactics.
Gw2 started with our same 8 professions we have now. The difference is the trinity was removed (hence less professions) BUT LLL of that former DIVERSITY was designed baseline into those 8 professions. It gave us a way to carry on exactly what we were doing toward the end of GW1’s life. IE. Running the highest damage possible while retaining the minimal amount of ‘baggage’ through incredibly clever group synergy and tactics. (Ironic huh?)
That brings us to this thread. The original 8 GW2’s professions are designed to be so versatile through gear, traits, runes, sigils, active/passive defense/offense, group combos, and group synergies that the 8 we have are capable of doing anything that could be done with the 10 from GW1 and then so much more.
Of all of these threads (several dozens), not once have a
Witnessed an actual ‘solution’/suggestion that wouldn’t be completely redundant. Wanting something new to tinker with is a valid opinion and I welcome the idea. BUT, let’s be real, what could/would they add that would not be redundant to the 8 other professions and serve a unique element to the dynamo of the variety of the current 8 professions?
That is such a serious question I have.
Does nobody pay attention to dev interviews? It was explicitly stated that they didnt really see any need for another class multiple times. And as far as the OP’s complaint about no dedicated healer.. Thanks for the laugh, wow is that way —-—>
^^ No, some people don’t seem to anyways. Apparently what GW2 devs say on specific topics and content direction holds less sway to some people than the GW1 game content does to set their expectations.
Im not opposed to new classes and races.. and I would prefer to have them
but with the balancing problem and Anet refusing to split skills in PvE and pvp which I hate considering how effective something is in PvP could mean a nerf for PvE and vice versa I really doubt we will see new classes in the future
new races may happen though since they would not unbalance the game at all
But I too would love to see Dervish return as well as see the Chronomancer finally get released
I would love to have a new profession, something new and refreshing is always welcomed in a very stagnant game.
Does nobody pay attention to dev interviews? It was explicitly stated that they didnt really see any need for another class multiple times.
On the other hand there have also been interviews where new professions being in the works has been brought up:
Although Johanson couldn’t commit to a timeframe, new weapon types and expansion of current types to more classes is absolutely in the works.

“… but we absolutely are going to do sweeping new features that you would traditionally only get in expansions – large regions, content and progression additions to your characters in the form of growth and professions and races. Those are all things that you will see in the lifespan of Guild Wars 2.”
