Hi,

I’m new to Guild Wars 2. I’m a long time WoW player (although never progressed beyond LFR there). I have the original Guild Wars on Steam, but never did much with it. Basically, I’ve heard good things about GW2, and since with the sale, the game cost as much as 1 month of WoW did, I decided to check it out.

So while I’m downloading literally hundreds of thousands of files, I wanted to ask the community what can I look forward to once I actually get into the game?

Something that’s very much not WoW. lol

I’m not really joking. Forget what you think MMOs are like because it’s not like that, most likely. A couple of things.

There’s no kill stealing here or node stealing. You don’t have to rush to mine a node, it’s your node. If you hit something and someone else hit it too you both get XP and experience.

Everyone can rez everyone else without taking a skill to do it.

There are no dedicated tanks or healers and in fact no skills that target an ally.

When the expansion hits there will be no new tier of gear and no new level cap.

There are no mounts or raids. Transportation is handled by way points.

This game doesn’t have quest hubs or traditional questing at all.

You can enter PvP from a very low level without gearing up at all.

There’s more but you get the idea. lol

Yeah, I’m really liking the idea that I won’t be competing with other players at all (except if I enter PvP or WvW of course). The massive fights against world event bosses look absolutely awesome.

Thanks for the reply, Vayne!

This game, at least on the PvE side, is all about co-op play without the need for formal teaming 98% of the time. It’s all about exploration and discovery rather than being shuttled from one hovering ? to the next until you are pushed off into the next area.

Just about any activity will give you XP. You will automatically be down leveled if you are a higher level than the area you are in. You will still get XP based on your actual level and item drops will also be level appropriate although certain drops will be based on the critter’s level or the area in for some event and heart rewards. You could level all the way to 80 and never leave the starter map, but you would be missing out on a very beautiful looking world.

Leveling is rather quick and once past the early fast levels, linear all the way to 80. When a major event occurs, I describe it as a flash-mob with swords. Players stream in from all over the map, dispatch the big bad and disperse. There are major bosses that spawn on a schedule so if you see a crowd of players milling around with nothing about, they are waiting for the 3:15 boss to spawn. Here’s a link to a handy time table.

When you go into your first map as a new level 2, the most obvious thing to do is the hearts, which are similar to traditional quests. However those are mostly there as filler and to provide places for players to sell inventory and to buy items with karma (a non gold currency you earn by doing events and hearts). The actual “heart” of Guild Wars 2 is the events. Events are quest like things that will pop up around you to do. For example, the first heart in the human starter zone. While you are doing that heart, a giant Queen Wurm may appear and you need to kill it. Or bandits may run in and start attacking people and setting things on fire. Further on, you might escort a cart to a nearby town and fight off attacks trying to stop it.

I’ve never played WoW but from what I’ve read, this game is much more free form and open to exploring.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Pretty much what the previous people have said (sorry if some of this is a repeat, others replied while I was typing). You get experience (sometimes a significant amount) for doing things you might not expect, like gathering (a small amount, but it’s still experience) and crafting (a significantly larger amount. With enough money for materials, it’s actually possible to level a character almost entirely through crafting).

Also, you don’t need to worry about being too high level to play with any friends who might join later than you, and lower level content never becomes completely irrelevant. Zones are level capped, and if you’re over that cap, the game adjusts your stats downward. Additionally, you’ll get experience and loot drops appropriate to your real level, no matter where you are, so you can always level off any content in any zone. Another major benefit is that, if any friends join after you, you don’t need to make an alt to play with them.

Also, do not make the mistake some new people make of assuming that events are random. Many of them are triggered by players doing certain things, or by the outcome of previous events. While it’s usually the most fun to just go with the flow, see what’s happening around you, and participate in events as you see them, it’s also possible to look up what needs to happen to trigger specific event chains.

Expect to need to be mobile. You can cast/use most skills while moving and probably should in most circumstances.

Coming from WoW there are a few things you should know.

1. Never use the mystic forge, it’s a trap. Farm gold not materials as some accounts like mine have been hexed since launch. Go and farm events not materials. Gold can buy anything you need on the trading post.

2. Never sell materials. You’ll need them later.

3. You can buy anything in the game with gold so buy low sell high in the trading post and spend your time in level 80 maps doing events and running dungeons.

Anet wants players kept poor so they’ll buy gems and convert to gold so amass a fortune and ruin their plans.

Just a quick comment to clarify. Never use the mystic forge for random gambling. There are plenty of things you need to use the mystic forge for, even if it’s just mystic salvage kits.

I wouldn’t gamble with the mystic forge, but I use it to upgrade mats sometimes.

as you are a former wow player (im a 10 year vet) I am sure you have experienced those “achie or no inv” players or those elitists who demand exsessive item lvl to join the group.
sadly some of them exist in GW2 they are known as “meta only” players in the pve LFG tool. they will instantly kick classes they deem as “unworthy”.

now with how the game changed over the years as long as every one works as a team and knows they class they play every class is “worthy” of coming along. 90% of guilds know this and allow any one to join.

in the last few months how ever there has been a big community push to purge these players from the game. and slow and surely we are seeing less and less of this and more open minded groups / players.

up until recently I found my self as an engineer getting almost instant kicked from groups due to players lack of understanding of my class. then some awesome person made a “meta” build for engineers and suddenly every one loves my engineer ^-^. only taken since launch of the game for ppl to like me. o well haha.

so

1. find a nice causal friendly guild (you are new to gw2 don’t set high standards for yourself as a gw2 newbie)

2. watch youtube guides on how to use combo fields in gw2

3. I would recommend u avoid the necromancer in pve (they are awesome for pvp) due to the lack of group boons they provide and other classes just stomp them in dungeons

4. for most classes its recommended using power toughness and vitiaty gear when learning to play your class in dungeons (you will die a lot less) then once you know every boss encounter and understand how the game works you can move on to “dps” stats such as power crit chance and crit dmg (again you need to learn a lot to use this gear effectively other wise u end up as “dat dead dude” on every fight)

5. woodenpotatoes on youtube is a very fantastic channel to learning the games lore.

a good starter class for you would be either a warrior or guardian when playing the game. they have high survival and low skill requirements to play in PVE. which make them a perfect starter class. then you can move on to the more complex classes of the game (like ele or engineer)

ignore the players that call u a noob etc they are just teenagers who play warrior / guard and have a “god complex” due to how easy and hardy the class they play are.

WvWvW is a bit complex to learn at first. but that’s ok there is edge of the mists map that is designed to help new players learn the basics of WvWvW and also get ranked up. just find the maps commander and just follow them, there are also plenty of guides on youtube.

youtube is your friend. if u need to know anything watch it.

this channel is very helpful to new players (its not mine, its just ahrd finding decent helpful channels on youtube).

one more thing.

in WoW gnomes are mocked.

in GW2 asura (the gnomes of gw2) are extremely popular and loved by all. (we are also better then every other race in every way you can imagine)

btw anet does not want to keep the playerbase poor. that’s just something poor players who make little to no effort in the game say to justify them being poor. all you need to do is learn to do dungeon speed runs or play the Trading Post and u will be rich.

if u invest 2 hours a day doing dungeon speed runs u can make around 100g a week just from 2 hours a day doing dungeons. it does not sound like a lot. but that’s 400g a month. and it does not interrupt real life or get in the way of your job..

u can even do it like 30 mins in the morning before you go to work then 30 mins when u get home and then an hour later in the evening, as long as u make the time u spend effective and efficant u can make easy gold every day.

plan your time well and u will be rewarded big time in the long term. MMO’s are long term things and not short term. so don’t expect to be rich over night (unless u get stupidly lucky and get a precursor drop and sell it like I did last month )

some easy way to make gold would be to do world bosses. once u learn their location u can chain them one after another u make average gold and it helps u get used to the games economy to.

dungeon running will be your main source of income around 1gold 50s per path (that are the short easy speed clear paths some give 3g but take hours to do) then u also have items that drop that can be sold. do this every day and in time u will have a nice pile of gold and after enough time and u got the best in slot gear u will find out gold soon becomes just “another currency” that builds up.

becoming self sufficient is a very powerful tool in an MMO.

Never sell materials ? Thats why many people think they are so poor. Selling materials
is the main source of income in this game .. at least if your not a speedrunner.

Or did you just meant never sell them to an NPC ? That would be correct, since you
should sell them at the TP to make money.

I make most of my money in level 40-60 areas btw. (iron, platinum, hard wood)

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

GW2 is a fun game but in the end no matter how diverse the professions are and how versatile they are, outside of soloing there seems to be only one effective way to play PvE and that is as a zerker. Im hoping the AoT will change this but Anets seem to have unwittingly encouraged this type of game play by making no effective death penalty and allowing any class to be able to become this to some extent. Conditions can be fun to play and if levelling solo in pve its good to build in survivability and speed, especially if you don’kitten to fight every monster. I find in mmos better survivability and speed means you can run through certain areas faster, between quests.

I use forums to give my opinions but I mostly avoid discussing over
them due to those less than polite individuals out there and their offensive attitude.

Well that’s an opportunity cost/benefit issue. Sell what you have to buy what you need to level easier to acquire gold faster or hoard mats so you don’t need to buy as much when leveling up a craft.
