I watched Sodapoppin play this game and it looked really cool, then I went to check it out and there was that 75% sale going on so I couldn’t pass on it.

So far, I’m really liking GW2 a lot. Probably more than World of Warcraft (WoW) which is insane! I’m a WoW Vet, and so I had a few questions I wish some could answer for me:

#1: I’m still skeptical of the “one-payment and play forever” thing. Is this really true? I’ll never have to pay again to log in? Because if so, I’m guild master of about 600 people in WoW and I swear if I tell those 600 people to come play GW2 they will as well as 1/2 my server that would follow me.

#2: I’ve always been a PvP Hero – What’s OP in PvP? And more or less, I like thief/guardian right now i have both near same level: Is either thief or guardian good in pvp?

#3: I feel so noob walking in Divinity’s Reach at level 15ish and all these level 80s have such cool looking armors etc (probably transmogrified etc.) —> I notice there’s some gems you can buy with real money, BUT --> in the long run, can you save up gold and buy gems with gold (so you don’t have to pay IRL) and get some transmogrification charges/etc (still not very familiar on how this gems/gold system works, but basically, can you do everything in this game with gold if you save up and would it take a lot of effort)?

#4: (This isn’t a question) I don’t know if it’s the server that I got into, but I haven’t run anywhere close to 8 year olds spamming servers/“map” chat. That’s a good thing!

#5: (Money questions): What professions are good for money-making etc? Can you make money off from PvP? What would you consider in-game to be poor/medium/rich? (For example, in WoW I’ve had like 250,000 gold which is considered wealthy, but some people with 800,000g++ are legit rich). Here in GW2, I went to the AH and the most expensive thing I saw was about 4,000g, thus, what are player’s gold savings range like?

#6: Though I normally get high achieves etc., and do lead a large group of people, I’ve always been a casual player – I do my own things, and simply support my fellow guildies etc. in other ways. Would I still be able to get in a little competitiveness (specially in PvP) simply by playing casual? As well as be wealthy simply by playing casual (2 – 4 hrs/per day, every other day is usually what I’d do).

#7: 1v1 is always a big thing for me… If you’ve ever heard the “1v1 me bruh” that’s how I settle sometimes lol. Is guardian/thief good 1v1, and what are some best 1v1 professions/what counters who?? —>>> Or can any profession beat any profession assuming they’re equally skilled (so it’s totally based of skill)?? Can you also 1v2 if you have better strategic skill than the other 2 guys you’re fighting? Or is there one profession that’s “OP” above the others per say. If you find this question odd, is because in WoW you can roll a Death Knight and 1v40.

#8: I’m really loving gw2 a lot right now! @Devs put out some more advertising! If I hadn’t watched Soda play gw2 on twitch, I would’ve never ever come to know of gw2. Like I’m glad I watched his stream specially on the date when the 75% off sale was going on lol (success!!)

edit:

RIGHT, of course I would forget to ask about guilds…. lol…..
#9: (GUILDS!) Is there a population cap for guilds? Such as you can’t have more than 800 people in guild for example? Guild bank —? any fellow guild masters with solid guilds out there? how do you run your bank, tips What are ranking systems like and what bonuses do guilds offer? What determines a casual guild, a solid guild, a competitive guild, and a popular guild in your opinion? Is there any special guild feature I should be aware of? What do guild masters and their members like to do casually in gw2? How do you interact with your guild and how do you like your current guild and why?

Thanks for everyone’s help! Any tips for new player welcomed too (not THAT noob though. Well maybe we’ll see)

1) Yes
2) Nothing is really OP, everything can be countered by a good player. If your enjoying Thief/Guard get good on those you will get “Annoying” to others pretty soon.
3) Yes
4) People usually only spam map chat for world bosses or WvWvW tatics.
5) PvE is where the moneys at (Dungeons speed clear) or manipulating the market or Silver Wastes.
6) Yes, jsut by login in every day you win cool stuff. If you manage to play you get mroe stuff, if you manage to complete/win you get even more stuff(PVP reward tracks)
7) Theres plenty of videos of those on youtube. That said there is no OpenWorld pvp, with exception of WvW. on PVP forum you may get more details too.

Extra tip: Enjoy the ride, don’t rush to endgame. The forum search is broken but you can find good info on stickies on the subforums.

Hope it clarified some question and Welcome to Tyria

1 – Yes it’s buy to play. There is no subscription fee and currently you do not have to pay to log in. I highly doubt this will change anytime soon.

2 – Check the PvP subforums for more info but yes Thief and Guardian are both in a good place in PvP.

3- Yes you can buy anything from the gem store with in game gold. Saving up the gold can take a while depending on what exactly you do to earn the gold.

4 – Yes yes it is :-P

5 – No idea about the average wealth. Yes you can earn money from PvP but you’d have a better chance in PvE. Professions none of them really. You’d be better selling the raw materials.

6 – Yes to the competitiveness. Possibly (depending on what you do) to the wealth part. Best places to earn money are Dungeons, TP Flipping and a couple of maps like Silverwastes or Dry Top.

7 – Once again check the PvP subforums for better info.

Welcome to the game. Only tip – Learn to dodge!

Edit – Point 9 – The limit is 500 people per guild – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild#Membership

#9: There is a population cap of 500 people in guilds. In a recent interview with AngryJoe, Colin Johanson did say that they were looking into ways of having multiple guilds be able to work together more closely, so although there is nothing definite yet, it is something they are looking at working on. They did say the cap of 500 is a hard cap, however, that they will not be expanding.

1) Yes, true. You can pay more money for gems which can be used to convert to in-game gold, or buy cosmetic items, or account upgrades like extra bank or character slots. As far as bringing people over – almost all content can be shared by groups cross-server using the megaserver but if your guildies want to participate in WvWvW with you, you need to all be on the same server, so try to find a relatively unpopulated server if people are coming over en-masse or else it will fill up and be locked.

2) I don’t play PvP so I couldn’t help you there.

3) Yes you can save up gold to purchase gems and buy gem-shop extras. Gold farming methods seem pretty decent, if repetitive.

4) Only spam I usually get are gold spammers whispering me, which get blocked and reported.

5) Professions don’t typically make a whole lot of money except maybe ascended mats/timers. Better profit/hr ration are running dungeons or following the zerg trains around Silverwastes. As far as the value of money goes, think back to Burning Crusade WOW where that 5,000-gold epic flying skill was a grind to reach. That’s about where the market value of gold is, I think. But it honestly depends on how much you farm gold vs how much you spend. Some folks are rich in the thousands, some have just a couple gold.

6) Yes, definitely. It’s usually pretty easy to hop in on things just playing casually. 2-4hrs every day will probaby do well for your wallet.

7) Again I don’t pvp, so I’m not sure if you can create 1v1 instances. Upcoming Guild Halls might address this. There’s no open-world dueling as in WoW.

8) Welcome to the game and I hope you have fun.

Live, learn, level up.

1 – It’s true. There is a paid expansion coming, and since you weren’t here during the free access to Living Story Season Two you’d have to pay gems to get those chapters if you want full rewards from them. You can play them for story just by having a friend start them up. But once you own the content you always own it, and they give a lot of updates for free.

2 — I don’t know, I don’t PvP, but I hear Thieves and Necromancers are currently pretty strong there.

3 — Yes, if you farm up enough gold you can buy gems with it and never pay a real world cent on gem store items. A lot of skins also come via game play. Now, the exchange rate of gold→gems keeps rising as more things come that people want gems for, as the source of gold-bought gems is other players spending cash on gems to turn into gold. Demand keeps outstripping supply. For me, real cash is much easier to gather than gold, so I seldom buy gems with gold.

4 — You can get some idiots in Map but for the most part this is a kinder, gentler community than you’ve seen elsewhere (I played WoW for 7 years, including raiding, until GW2 arrived, so I know whereof you speak). It helps that blocking and reporting the truly nasty is fairly easy, and ANet takes it seriously when people talk trash. (I hear PvP chat is nastier, but in PvE things are on the benign side).

5 — I believe you mean craft skills. “Professions” is GW2 lingo for “classes.” Most crafts are money sinks, but needed to make account bound ascended gear. That’s BiS, though only by a slim margin. You can do just fine without a single ascended item. There are some niche items you can make money on. Most people who get super rich do it by playing the Trading Post, which takes much the same focus and skill and research as doing well on RL stock exchanges. I’ve got over 200 gold right now after nearly 3 years of play, most of my friends are in double digits only, the best I ever had was the mid 400’s. TP traders make it into the thousands of gold but that’s not standard.

6 — Dungeons can be casual once you know them, and between gold rewards and selling drops from them you can increase your gold reserves reasonably steadily. There is also a zone called Silverwastes that drops so much loot in one events cycle that you may need 15 minutes at the end just to sort it all out. PvP lets you go in and compete starting at level 1; you are upleveled to 80 and everyone has the same gear level in it, with their choice of stat distribution. So you can start learning the ropes there right away and if you get skilled, yes, you’ll be competitive.

7 – I don’t know, I don’t PvP.

8 – I’m glad you found out about the game.

9 – 500 max in a guild. We believe that in the expansion there will be guild alliances so the really large guilds such as Tequatl Terror Squad (dedicated to taking down the hardest world bosses) will be able to coordinate their many chapters.

Bonuses: As guilds build influence they can unlock benefits that apply guild-wide, and create banners that give buffs to any passersby that use them. They get missions to do as a guild, which give merits, which are used to expand guild benefits. Individuals get commendations from the missions they can use to buy guild-related gear. The expansion will be bringing refinements to the guild UI — details have not yet been released. Banking permissions currently are not as robustly configurable as in WoW, it’s sort of all or nothing access to each tab. Hopefully that will also be improving.

Check Players Helping Players at the top stickies for the Tips thread. There are lots of little things veterans take for granted that new players need to know (like Deposit all Materials from your inventory cogwheel to send mats to your bank mats tabs) and that thread mentions many of them.

Have fun in Tyria!

To add on some stuff that has been answered already:

  1. accessing the game is completely free of charge after you buy, and the regular content added to the game so far has also been free of charge, you only have to buy gems or convert gold→gems if you want to access the instanced story steps and achievements related to certain updates but only if you weren’t able to get on during the time the update was active(which is usually a two-week period). The price of those is 200 gems each, which is about 2 bucks if i’m not wrong.
  2. you can also get transmutation stones(the things you to copy one armor/weapon look to another) from pvp reward tracks and for completing pve map.
  3. the guild cap is at 500 and they can’t increase it at the time because of a game limitation, but you can be part of 5 guilds at the same, tho you’ll only be able to read the chat/access bank/show tag of the guild you are currently representing.

People seem to be giving good advice, but I’ll just thrown in my own two cents for your first question.

1) Correct. You buy the game, you are never required to pay money ever again. Additionally, there is no content locked behind a pay wall (real money, not gems, which are easily obtainable by converting gold) after the initial purchase.

The ONLY EXCEPTION to this is Heart of Thorns, the expansion that was just announced recently. It’s GW2’s first expansion. YES, the new content will be locked behind purchasing the expansion. This is the first instance of “pay-to-play” aside from the initial purchase, and will likely be the last until (fingers crossed) a second expansion some number of years in the future.

This isn’t WoW, with a paid game and paid expansions that get released way too often, and even with those purchases you still need to pay more to play.

No sub fees, no VIP or member fees, no premium accounts. Technically, you don’t even need to buy HoT. You could buy the base game on discount and be done paying forever.

Have fun, thanks for joining us, glad you like it so far, and above all: welcome to the game!

Welcome to Tyria Rod.Yes this game is Buy To Play = Buy once, play forever (unless you want expansion that we all wait with huge HYPE).
Even though game is free after you buy it,game is not even 1% PayToWin.Everything that is on market, you can buy with gold, and gold is not that hard to earn if you dont mind farming.
There are 2 PVP modes in this game = sPvp and WvW.
sPvP is mode where you are instant lvl 80 with all skills unlocked so only player skill matters.
WvW is massive battleground with hundreds of players, sort of like FPS games where commander leads an army against another1.
There is limit of 500 players per guild but Colin Johenson said that he will try to find a way to make guilds cooperate with other guilds more closely. In GW1 we had guild alliances so i bet its that.
Sadly but there is no proper 1vs1 in this game, there is no duels or anything where you can test your skills in open world – you can play 1vs1 arena.

You didn’t saw anything of GW2 yet, just wait to see events such as halloween. This game have by far best events in MMO world.

Still surprised how fastest selling MMORPG in history is not heard by MMO community, all those rewords, all those WOW – GW2 comparison that is spreading around internet.

Suggestion – make a huge guild here, you will need it when Guild Halls arrives
Note – this game is vary casual, you dont do endless farm for gear, you dont even need to play everyday to be good as others, its made more for busy people with jobs and such.
I was WOW player long ago, after GW2,i never went back =)

#1: You can level to 80 without spending a cent. A lot of things in endgame require a ridiculous about of grind, even if its just aesthetics. So if you want that portion to go much faster, you spend $$ on gems and convert that to gold. There are a lot of gem-exclusive gear in the shop. I would say you should purchase some bank tabs(with gems) because you get a lot of stuff. So…yah you CAN get by without spending any money.

#2: I don’t pvp. I played WvW…never pvp.
#3: Saving up gold in the game takes a lot of time and fortitude. I said to myself “Yah no problem, keeps me playing the game”. But after grinding your mind into dust, you realize that you’d have to be grinding in the game for years to get what you want sometimes. I spent months and months farming the materials for my legendary only to realize that even if I spend another 12 months grinding all that I need, I’ll still need to be insanely lucky with a precursor drop or somehow get 500 gold to buy off the TP. (expansion precursor acquisition method excluded)

#4: Like any game, even WoW’s barren chat or trade chat, there are 8 year olds and immature folks. Ive been cussed at for breaking up a farming train by killing a world boss on my own… I inadvertently messed up their farming and was thus branded an kitten. Ive also seen offensive stuff in chat too.
#5: When I stopped playing, I had about 150 gold. I also spent a lot on some items recently so I probably had about 300+ saved up. This is after about 1100 hours of game time.

#6: I played casual, 2-4 hours a day. WvW is where its at for server vs server competition
