Hello there! I am new to this game and just downloading it. I do have MMO experience.. with World of Warcraft. I haven’t played that game in years. I am just looking for some helpful advice when starting up and what class would be best for a new player??

Thanks in advance!

Just try whatever appeals to you!

You can enjoy all parts of this game with pretty much every class. Once you get to the point of optimizing your gameplay, you’ll find that some combinations click more with you than others (e.g. I thoroughly enjoy playing the asura race, to the point where I’ve leveled several duplicate classes so that I can enjoy playing them as asura, too). Fortunately, it’s really easy in this game to build, level and outfit another character later on when you have resources from earlier characters, so there really isn’t any way you can go “wrong”.

There is a strong element of “find your own fun” in this game. You won’t find questchains that lead you through the game, but instead will be free to pick your own direction and the areas of the game you enjoy most. There’s tons to do and to discover in this game.

Don’t try to hoard things for later. You will find that it’s fairly easy to gather decent equipment whenever you need it, there’s no use in filling your bank with stuff another character might need 50 levels from now. If you can’t use it, salvage it for materials, or sell it at the trading post. There’s a special storage area in your bank where you can store a full stack of each type of crafting material this game knows, and you can even deposit materials there from anywhere in the world, and you can sell stuff at the trading post from wherever you are, too.

Above all, try everything, and see what’s fun for you!

Warrior, Ranger, Necromancer.

These 3 are hardy, and have comparatively simpler class mechanics.
Perfect for new players just starting out.

Current 80s: Ranger, Mesmer, Guardian, Elementalist, Revenant, Necromancer.
Working on: Engineer

Thanks guys for the feedback. I guess this game seems like learn as you go. I am thinking im going to go Necromancer. How fun is he? and what is the highest level you can get?
Also is there any clans/guilds I can join out there that would help me learn the game?

Highest level is 80, but you’ll get there fairly quickly. Rounding out your character, unlocking traits and finding the equipment stats you feel most comfortable with may take a good while longer than getting to 80.

For guilds check the Looking for forums.

Personally Necro is a lot of fun. Especially in WvW where they really shine. In PvE they’re good in open world but some people dislike them in dungeons as they’re a pretty selfish class and the benefits they do bring (blinds, condi cleanse etc.) can generally be done better by other classes. In sPvP I believe they’re ok but I’m not overly sure.

Highest level is 80.

There are plenty out there. If you make a post in the Looking For forum including details such as your time zone/server location (e.g NA or EU) and what you’re looking for then people can give you some offers.

If you come from a mmo like WoW, then you will most probably have a few difficulties in the beginning. Because GW2 is not built up as WoW and the like is. There are no healers nor tanks in this game, each person is responsible for their own health and to manage it through the skills you have.
With that said, each class, except the necro have stuff to share to make things easier. There are buffs to give out, there are fields to place and for you to step in too or blast to get the buffs/health out of it. Important is that you learn your skills and understand that when you get damage, you use your dodges or step out of the damage range or kite until you are ok to go again. Noone will toss you a burst heal, it is up to you to deal with it , so if you run in to a dungeon pull everything you are going to die no matter what level you are. Being aware of what happens and how things works will help you a lot.

So advice to you is to get to know your class and other classes. Watch and learn and also ask. The community in this game is very helpful so use the chat, it is very low risk of you getting trolled.

About classes, don’t pick what others tell you to pick, think through what you like the most and go from there. Elementalist, necro, messmers, ranger are ranged class. Warrior and guardian are melee and thiefs are kind of melee, and engys are just very special with a kitten nal of everything ;D
Each class do have ranged and melee weapons though.

Also if you are not in a hurry, try the classes. You have 5 slots, make a few and get the feeling of each class. You can delete those you don’t want or get more slots. In the end you will like most of us at least have one of each class
