Hi,
I just bought the game. Have played a few mmos in the past like EverQuest, Anarchy Online, Lord of the Rings Online and Guild Wars.

Now I want to play this game with a friend, and I’m looking for a server to join.

Been reading here a few posts, and some people have mentioned that the Mega Server system has changed things. All the posts regarding servers for balanced play or good PvE are over 7 months old and I’m not sure if things are the same.

Isn’t MegaServer suppost to bring balance? Meaning that there is no importance in which server you choose, and that they all are kind of combined?

People have also mentioned things about servers that don’t have high enough players for big fights.

others recomend a server for WvW ot PvE..

Looking for a balanced server that would provide a good experience to a new player.

I should have mentioned that I’m looking for a European Server.

thanks

You represent your server in WvW that’s about it. So if you want a busy WvW pick a server based on its winning tier. Otherwise PvE it doesn’t matter, PvE is the “megaserver” where server names don’t matter and everyone plays together.

Hello and welcome to gw2

Megaservers is a system where you enter a map zone and get to see and play with different players form your and other servers combined.

all zones are affected except wvw

Megaservers also has a priority to put you in a zone with your party members, guild members, friends and other players from your server. (you wont be separated form your friend)

In short, megaservers lets you play with other players from other servers, making the zones you enter always full and live

As for picking your main home server, the main effect it has on you i would say is wvw and language.

Pick a server thats speaking your language (if not english) and when it comes to wvw you will only be able to team up with your own server players.

Personally, ive been playing on Gandara server since i started to play and im happy with my guild (from gw1) and im also happy with joining wvw groups that we have in wvw

Which server you pick affects your WvW experience quite dramatically. I’d say pick any server to start but be prepared to change servers if you ever start enjoying WvW IF the server you picked isn’t for you (whether it’s too populated or not populated enough)

Expac sucks for WvW players. Asura master race

Ok thank you for your replies.
That cleared a few things. Looks like I’m going to join Seafarer’s Rest, cause the name sounds good

I will be mostly playing PvE since I’m new… and I will try WvW in the future.

Welcome aboard :-)
SFR can be a boring choice, but it is a WvW dominator. I don’t think you’ll get to experience losing in WvW large scale all that often, which is not necessarily a bad thing however ^^

What do you mean by a boring choice? Isn’t Megaserver suppost to make all the servers seem like one?

I think Evalia was referring to WvW as opposed to PvE. But yes in PvE megaservers make it so you’re playing with people from all different servers (although it does try to prioritise home server, friends list and guild when joining maps).

ok so no worries for over populated or under populated servers for PvE. That’s taken care of.
WvW is something for the future, but I guess a server with very good players in your team might not be as challenging.

Be aware that transferring servers comes at a cost; either in Gems or by deleting all your characters to move only your account. You will want to choose a server you want to stay with early on, if you want to transfer at little to no cost.

Welcome to Tyria, and good luck!
