Newbie Ranger needs help leveling
Do more events and hearts in the area. The game will tell you what level the next quest is to prevent this from happening. You are supposed to do things along the way to the next story point.
You’ll never gain enough XP per story quest to only do them and ignore all overworld content.
Well, you are a ranger, why not bearbow to take them out?
Also, some real advice here, I would reroll. Rangers aren’t allowed to do jack kitten in the endgame because they are seen as an inferior class. Not saying it’s right, just saying that if you want in on all the content I would go with something else.
The main storyline has intentional level gaps. You cannot play through just the story alone. Best advice is to play other things until you hit the required level, then do the story again.

Some real advice, haha. Just. LOL.
Don’t listen to this guy. He has no idea what he’s talking about. I main a Ranger, and let me tell you, only people who have no idea how to play this game see Rangers as an inferior class.
On your topic, OP, go around and do more hearts, events and grab those skill points and vistas. Basically, do EVERYTHING.
Knowing that you are going to be ambushed… you could position yourself where there is minimal danger. “Bearbow” might only be a stones throw from “Kitten” around here, but at level 7 it isn’t that bad of an idea to try sending your pet in to tank, and kite while ranging down your attackers.
IIRC, once you get one or two down some friendly NPC’s join the fight and then it’s just a matter of assisting kills.
at your level equip all gear with the power stat and upgrade with vitality pebbles…its been a while
The correct answer is if you’re below the level of your main quest line you’re not really supposed to be doing your main quest line. That’s why it tells you the level on your quest tracker. It’s a goal more than a do this now type of thing.
The main course of this game is actually dynamic events. Go find some. Gather everything. Explore. Complete a zone. You’ll be a high enough level in no time.
Also keep in mind it might seem like leveling is slow in the game. I gain a level every half an hour or so without trying. In fact the other day, I went from level 58-61 in just under an hour.
You don’t have to spend more time leveling between levels at higher levels.
thank you all for your replies. I guess the storyline quests are just some kind of guide.

Frost Spirit and Spotter with sword and warhorn and cat pets will be your best way to make friends when you dungeons later on.
It’s like giving them a plate of DPS boosting cookies.
Taking a break from GW2 to play various
Nintendo games..
Go to other starter cities (via portal gates to Lions Arch then to other cities) and clear some maps. Do every event you see pop up.
No more level problems.

I was merely warning him that your class has a crapton of bugs (that mainly has to do with the pet), and that most people wont want to play with a ranger. I’m saying this as a necro main to not pick a class with a bunch of problems. Your class encourages sitting 1500 units away and pewpewing at everything which helps no one. My class is designed around conditions which arguably are not useful in most situations in the game. I’m speaking from experience and trying to get other people to avoid the pain of not being allowed into a lot of things when they hit 80.
OP, if you must go ranger I would highly suggest you switch to a sword build at some point in the leveling process.
You cannot level 1-80 from the story line quests. They expect you to level your character by exploring different zones until you reach the appropriate level for the next mission.
Also, Ranger is just fine at end-game, don’t listen to people who say it isn’t, they don’t truly understand how this game works. The people that would reject you are the ones that say zerk warrior is the highest DPS in the game. Those people are what the rest of us like to call “idiots”.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
When it comes to your story line, it’s best to get a few levels ahead of it before doing it…makes it a bit easier and doable solo. If you still have trouble doing it, get a friend to join you and help with the story.
And as others have said here, do everything else in the world to level quicker. Hearts, events, map exploration, reviving downed npcs, gathering, viewpoints, doing dailies, etc., are all good ways to get your level up pretty quickly. Then do your personal story when you get at the appropriate level or above. Heck, I have a couple lowbie alts that are a good 10-30 levels ahead of their personal storyline……I just do it when I feel like it…lol. Everything else I do for leveling.
And ignore the Ranger naysayers. (Draknar’s post above on those naysayers is spot on)They’re a fun class to play. Equip it however you like and learn as you go what weapon sets best suit your playstyle. Most of all, try everything in the game, and have fun!

Yep always stay ahead of your personal storyline lvl.
Have my ranger at 80, all ascended and then made a Guardian (lvl 80 all ascended). I always go back to the ranger. Was working up a warrior—meh. Now I have started a Mes—-it’s more fun to play than guard and war.
I have played as a warrior and a ranger to level 7 and followed the quest storyline. With both professions I reached level 7 and then I ran into this quest called a vision from the past. The problem is I am only at level 7 and the bandits who attack me are at level 11. How can I possibly complete that quest when they kill me off almost instantly. Isn’t this game suppose the folow a chain quest at the level you are in? What should I do?
As a Ranger, one skill you will find VERY useful when you can get it is Radiation Field, My girl has a ranger she just lvled up and it rocks when trying to get through the Personal Story !!

Good luck with the Mes, My main is a Mes, great fun but be aware half the skills do not work ……… Sword / Focus #3 is my most hated non functional & #5 not following the mob..
Although, YAY Portals lol

My main is my 80 ranger, but I also have an 80 mesmer…..and yea, they’re tricky to play well…..and definitely agree on the YAY Portal….lol.

I main a ranger too and I’ve never had problems. I’ve only got owned on WvW against thiefs. Another good way to level up is Edge of the Mists.

I also have an 80 mesmer, guardian, and ele…..and I always return to my 80 ranger, as well. Am working on a 60 something warrior, and they’re ok……but am not sure why some rave about them so much……as you said….meh. The Mesmer is very interesting to play……gotta really know your weapon sets, specials, clones, and such to play it well….tough character to play efficiently….which makes it a lot of fun, imo. Am also working on a lowbie Necro…..that’s an interesting one, as well. But yea, I invariably return to my 80 ranger main….love that character.

I am with ya on thieves…..lol…..I really suck against them on my ranger in WvW…..everything else I do fairly decent against. Fun class to play in WvW, imo…..just gotta know your limitations, have really good situational awareness, and use the terrain, especially if you’re using a bow as one of your weapon sets.
And bigtime 10+ on the Edge of the Mists comment, OP. If you don’t mind getting in with the zerg, you can easily get several levels in an hour or two in EotM, even when your character is a very low level.

Quoting a poster here? Just use the left curved arrow on the bottom right of the post.

Quote button is a curved icon on lower right of post, but you will have to allow more than just GW2 if using NoScript in order to see it.
Lol, I thought that arrow was a “reply”. Never bothered to check the tool tip. Thanks!

I just used my ranger to run around like a lightning bolt to get my WvW map completions.
I’ll take my guardian in during the very few times I actaully want to play WvW.
Maybe I’ll actually try a dungeon with the Guard one day—-it’s another area of the game I haven’t really experienced yet (just one that I did with 1 friend and we were both using the so called useless dungeon ranger).

I’ve run dungeons with my ranger, warrior and mesmer. I’ve felt that with the warrior the fights are more intense, because you’re close range. Other than that I don’t know why people hate so much rangers. I get that there are a lot of rangers, or any other class for that matter, that don’t know how to play. For example, the other day I was on Dry Top trying to down Tootsie and there were like 5 chars with ascended armor and weapons hitting it (warriors, guards and thiefs), but not using their CC skills. I was the one always preventing Tootsie from running away. Sadly I got distracted with my phone and it ran away. They immediately started berating and claiming it was my fault, because I was a noob and didn’t do enough DPS. I just lost it and started laughing to be honest.

Just a heads up, I didn’t see anyone else response to this. Radiation Field isn’t a ranger skill, it’s an Asuran Racial skill, so if you don’t play an Asura you don’t have access to it.
