Newbie question
Race makes no difference apart from a couple of exclusive elite skills which aren’t powerful enough to make a difference gameplay wise.
It will determine how you look, starting city and the first bit of your storyline but that is it – so pick whichever you fancy the look of
Welcome to the game!
Race doesn’t matter in this game for survival, nor does gender. Everyone has the same base stats and move speed. Play whatever you like! Let’s see your masterpiece! (sorry, reference to a current holiday activity NPC line there).
You may want to avoid Norn and Charr because they are so big they get camera issues in tight spaces which can indirectly cause death because you can’t see what you are doing. Charr in particular take some learning on jumping puzzles because their foot-box isn’t where you intuitively think.
Take a look at the hints and tips stickied in Players Helping Players for a ton of info on surviving the game. And practice dodging, bind it to a key you can easily hit very quickly.
For class, I’d say the sturdiest is Guardian. They have lower health pools but a lot of ways to block and deflect damage. They won’t be in a Warrior’s dps class — always tradeoffs! Necromancers also have a lot of ways to save themselves from full death.
Race makes no difference. As far as PvE goes, you may want to look at Ranger. You can stand back and pick off your targets from a safe distance. You also have pets that can pull agro off of you.
Look up the racial skills for each race and pick the one you like best. Unlike some other games, your race does not modify your class abilities. Instead, they have specific abilities that stay the same regardless of class.
Racial skills tend to be underwhelming, though. If you decide that you like a race’s racial skills but don’t like the appearance, I’d suggest going with the appearance you prefer.
80s: Necro x2, Ranger, Warr, Guardian x2, Ele x2, Mes, Thief
Really good comments so far.
My own experience is that I tend to struggle more on jumping puzzles with my Norn a bit more than on other races. In fairness, though, that could be simply a camera issue or even just my perception given that the Norn, at least for me, feel a little “clumsier.”

I would recommend getting a good bear and a good longbow, then heading immediately to the dungeons! (Don’t actually do this, lol)
Anyway, Rangers are pretty survivable. Heavy professions, too. You shouldn’t have too much trouble regardless of what you pick, though. Good luck!
Always start with a warrior. Get used to it and then figure out the differences from there. That’s just my process though.
I also have a Guardian…it plays more fun, but it definitely helped me to start as a Warrior.

^^This.
I am a Jump Puzzle addict and JPs are one of the reasons most of my toons are Asura and none of them are Norn. Anet says that all races take up the same amount of space in game but Asuras feel more agile and it is definitely easier to see around them.

Taking up the same amount of space is a problem. A norn can’t tell whether or not it’s safe to jump to a given beam because he’s effectively the size of an asura. However, it’s not the biggest problem. The winner in that regard is the camera. Since ArenaNet’s solution to clipping issues is to automatically pan the camera until there are none, norns get terrible camera angles in most jumping puzzles. As you said, Asurans are definitely the best race to have when doing JPs.
