Newcomer returning from Guild Wars 1
For a Black Widow Spider, you just need to get a certain number of points in your HOM from GW1. Once you have the required number of points (I don’t remember what they are,) sign on to GW2, open your inventory, and double-click the special token that will warp you to the HOM. You can get a Black Widow there.
As for your other concern: WELCOME TO GW2!
Get into a guild. I didn’t think that big guilds are friendly until I actually ended up in one. I know a few people from it already and it really enhances my playing experience.
And yes, welcome to GW2, enjoy your experience!

I went into that a little bit and unfortunately I’m short on those points, which is a shame because I just wanted my black widow pet to come with me on the new adventures in Guild Wars 2. I’ll miss him.
Thank you for the warm welcome!

Really? I guess with the title “Guild Wars 2” Guilds must play a pretty big role haha, that’s great to know! I felt bad because I really want to like this game, it was just missing those two major elements that distracted me from fully enjoying it, socializing and my original black widow pet.

How many points do you need? Points you go into Guild Wars and get now still count, you can update your HoM even today.
You can get your Black Widow.
You need 30 points for a Black Widow, so it’s not exactly easy to get.
The black widow wasn’t exactly easy to get in GW1 either. You had to either finish part of the Underworld (end-game zone, it’s a bit like if you had to get 1/2 way through Arah explorable), or pay a small fortune to the Zaishen Menagerie.
If you’ve been playing GW1 for years it shouldn’t be that hard to get a black widow in this game. You’ll probably have a lot of points already (in fact you can get some for putting your original black widow in the Hall) and you’ll be in a good position to get more. This guide gives you a good idea of how you can get them: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide_to_earning_Hall_of_Monuments_rewards
I’ve gotten over 30 points and the only ones I really had to work for were some of the destroyer and oppressor weapons and vabbian armor (just because I would never have gotten that set normally, and paid more than average because I got it just after the calculator came out).
If I could I’d give you my black widow. I’m arachnophobic so I couldn’t stand having a spider running around after me. I paid the Menagerie to unlock and level both of them so I could complete my collection and have never used the one in GW2.

You paid someone to level your character to get the points? I’d be willing to do that xD, I miss my spider.
Really? You’d probably hate my house then, in real life I have pet tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, praying mantises, etc.

Why on earth would you pay the menagerie to level them? Death leveling existed for a reason!

No, I paid Zaishen coins to the NPC in the Zaishen Menagerie in GW1 to unlock and level the black widow and moss spiders for me. I think most people don’t bother because it’s quicker to level the pets yourself than to farm the coins, but it is an option for all pets and very appealing when seeing your own pet behind you freaks you out.
(I’d love the snakes, praying mantises etc. though, it’s only spiders I don’t like.)
If you mean the part where I said I only really had to work for some points I don’t mean someone else did it for me, just that most of them came from things I did anyway, even before I knew about the HoM, like finishing the campains and maxing titles or getting armor sets, minis etc. I liked. I don’t count that as time spent working towards my HoM points because that wasn’t what I was aiming for when I did it, I just wanted that armor set or title or whatever, being able to add it to the hall was a bonus.

Again it’s because I’m arachnophobic. I wanted to complete my pet collection, but I’m terrified of spiders, even virtual ones. Just seeing them chasing after my character freaked me out. Even going AFK for the actual levelling part there’s far too much time spent around the spiders for me to consider that.
And if I remember correctly you couldn’t death level the moss spider anyway.
So for me farming coins (with another pet) and paying the Menagerie to level them up without me every having to see them was by far the better option.

Ahh that makes more sense, although I have level 20 characters on GW 1, I didn’t get any points from any of the compaigns because I completed them before I bought eye of the north and they didn’t register, I’ve beaten prophecies, factions, nightfall, etc. but didn’t get any HoM points from any activities.
That’s strange. Have you gone to the hall on the character(s) that beat the campaigns and clicked on the Honour monument?
That should give you the option to add statues for any campains you’ve completed, as well as any titles you’ve maxed (or in some cases reached a specific tier, which can be as low as 3).
And if that doesn’t work you only need to do the last mission again, and can do it in normal mode, to be able to add it.
If you’ve added the tapestries you can also add any elite armor sets, any non-dedicated minis and any destroyer, torment or oppressor weapons you’ve got, and any heroes with upgraded armor. You can also add MOX straight away and your Black Moa.

You have to physically go into the hall of monuments and tell the monument you completed the campaign.

Thanks, although I did used to play a lot, I took a long break after I discovered Warcraft which ultimately got my attention for awhile. Now, I don’t remember too much haha
My guild has people people who have helped people get points in Guild Wars 1 as well as playing Guild Wars 2 together. Once you have a couple of friends to help you, there’s no reason you can’t go back and get 30 points. It’s not that hard, even if it takes a while.

It’s good that they still allow you to get them, which is really nice! I got a bit spoiled, I played GW2 seeing how good it was and then after I had to go back to GW 1 to get my pet back, I couldn’t find myself playing without going back to GW 2 xD.
I have a friend that may be playing my original account to rack up the HoM points for me since he wants to do a play through, so I may get lucky haha

I bought gw1 2 years ago but only played a total of 100 hours on it.
than I joined a guild that has been around since the launch of gw1 a couple of months before gw2 launched, man that made a difference !
They even helped me get all my 35 HoM points and everything, it was a blast.
The entire guild migrated to gw2 as soon as it launched, and I’ve been playing with them ever since.
On a side note A.net when are you gonna introduce alliance chat or something similar again ? my guild is now divided into 3 full guilds and we cannot communicate properly !

I recently started playing again and the same problems started again, it’s hard to believe that an mmo with so many features that encourage player team work results in such an anti social game.
I managed to join a few guilds after they invited me, and I can’t get any players in even the guild to talk to me. I’ll just say hi or ask if anyone wants to do a quest and they call just ignore you, 400+ members, over 80 online and none of them talk.
