Next Expansion.
They’re working on it. That doesn’t mean it will be out anytime soon.
Expansions take a lot of planning and programming before we see it. If they weren’t working on it by now, it’ll be too late.
Yes, it’s way, way, way too early for one. So it’s not coming soon.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
I really hope they don’t plan on releasing one a year after HoT as HoT already messed up enough as it is. The fact they’re even working on one makes me afraid that it’s going to be as much of a headache as HoT has been.
I remember a time when they said they’d never release an xpac as they didn’t believe in making people pay for them. I really wish they’d had stuck to that.

Source please. I’ve never seen that quote and I suspect you’ve misremembered.
ANet may give it to you.

Oh, lawd. That was years ago during beta times. So believe it or not, it’s cool. I don’t mind people thinking I’m crazy.
EDIT: Not the exact source, but it’s still a quote from Mo himself
Apparently they needed to pay some bills afterall.

Yes, they hoped to support the game on gemstore sales but it appears that income was insufficient, so they switched to the expansion model. However I doubt they ever came right out and said no paid expansions, as no one can predict the future and it would have been foolish to rule out an income source.
“We don’t need an expansion to pay the bills, and we’re not focused on an expansion right now. I won’t try and predict the future, maybe someday we will do one, maybe we won’t. But for now we are focused on the living world. We believe we can update the world and adapt the world in any way we want to through these bi-weekly updates.”

Word, I agree. Also, your signature is far too relevant right now. 0_o
As far as I know it’s completely normal for a company to start working on their next expansion as soon as they finish one, even if they’re planning other things in between.
In other fields they don’t even wait that long. For example Microsoft and Sony probably started working on their next console before the Xbox 1 and PS4 had launched. As soon as the design and building was done and it was turned over to the marketing guys they’d be looking at what they could do to improve on it. (And some people probably already had ideas they’d come up with during the development process which weren’t possible that time around.)
The part which is unusual I think is to actually tell people you’re working on your next expansion. It’s a reasonable assumption with a lot of companies (I assume Blizzard for example always has at least 1 WoW expansion in progress) but they don’t tend to announce it until they actually have some details to show.
Whereas Anet announced Guild Wars 2 pretty much as soon they had decided to make a sequel even though they hadn’t actually started working on it and they seem to be doing that with the next expansion. In contrast to HoT where they took the more conventional route of waiting until they had something to show and then doing a big reveal.
Sometimes I think what they want to do is tell us everything they’re working on all the time, but then that back fires if things don’t work out or get pushed back (like the precursor collections) so they try to avoid it, and that’s why they sometimes go too far the other way.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Just add Salt " Next expansion, plan to buy the core game again at full price and have some kind of excuse from Anet for new money!"
Just saying:

Next expansion will have ONE map with 6 different layers (and even more lag).
All mobs are elite or champions, because of challenging content ofc. And we
will get 1 new armor set that is only available through the new raid.
All that for the nice price of 100 bucks.
Thas more or less what i actually expect

They’re working on it. That doesn’t mean it will be out anytime soon.
Specifically, most MMO developers begin work on an expansion slightly before the previous expansion releases.
It’s never too early for an expansion. I like content.
I only just started playing again two days ago. Just made my way into Auric Basin, if they are planning another one, jeez I gotta get going.

I have a serious question about this. Did you read the article? In the article they never said they were against expansions. In fact, Mike said they were open to the idea of expansions but it wasn’t something they were focused on at that time. Maybe I’m reading it wrong but I don’t see where they said they were against st the idea of doing a paid expansion.

Just because they decided to make an expansion doesn’t mean what they said was untrue. The gem store could very well sustain their operations but it is also important for games to grow and attract new customers which expansions do tend to do.

I think the recent ‘departures’ signal quite clearly that lessons have been learnt from HOT, so actually I would expect a lot more maps and a sub $50 price point.

What do you mean with “departures” ? There are no official number of current
players .. and if you mean Colin .. wasn’t he not “very exited” about how “awesome”
raids and “challenging group content” would be for the game ?
So the only signal could be if Colin in fact has been fired because he lost the vision
and not that he has left because he didn’t liked the direction of the game. Or he
was simply lying to us all the time.
But all in all when i hear only new content we get in the next 6 months is more
raid stuff .. i don’t see there has been learned anything.
