So by now im sure some of you have seen E3 and with some PS4 and xbox one games supporting MMO’s like Planetside 2, FF14 etc. Do you think it’s possible or cool for Guild Wars 2 to come to these platforms? I mean from a business standpoint it would open up a huge audience and the Guild Wars 2 skill system doesn’t use like 5 hotbars like in WOW or other traditional RPG’s so it would be kinda cool to see Anet release something like that.
I’d like to hear you guys opinions on this.

From a business stand point, it would be good. Opening the game to consoles would bring in more revenue. However, my own personal experience in playing a computer game with console players has not been fun. Console players seem to have a certain mindset that just doesn’t sit well with me. I play the game to have fun and the few times I’ve played a game with mixed players I just did not enjoy my time at all. Everything turned into a competition. Just not for me. However, that is just my opinion / experience.

If they’d have the same servers for both. They could make console servers. It would make more sense than adding servers to the PC version.

Very true. I guess it would come down to money and if the potential income would justify the expense of new separate servers.

I am coming hugely from the consoles and play PC just for a few games like MMOs etc. I always had exactly the opposite impression
But I guess that hugely depends on the genre, as I am used to play single player games on consoles.

Well, even without the million skillbars like wow, I feel like making GW skills (10) + dodge playable on a joypad might be difficult. Especially targeting and Camera in PvP etc. On the other hand, I would finally be able to dodge without breaking my fingerns (R1 or so ) Not really good at those kind of stuff on keyboards.

I kinda agree but it all comes down to the game and the community i mean look at the MOBA genre that’s one of the harshes people you can meet online because it ENCOURAGES competitve play and if your not up to snuff people are gonna get kitten ed over it. Guild Wars 2 on the other hand encourages teamwork and the importance of the community(with the exception of the pvp aspect)

If they’d have the same servers for both. They could make console servers. It would make more sense than adding servers to the PC version.

Yea they would either have to expand their existing servers(because of WVWVW) or create a whole different batch just for the console users.

Never really played DCUO on the PS3 but from what i heard it’s more played then its PC counterpart and it has only one hotbar like in GW2 so it shudn’t be to hard.

At least the issues for next gen can be rectified easier since both next gen consoles support base PC architecture, so that should make porting a wee bit easier on the low-level client programming.

On the other hand, inclusion of a next-gen client could, and would, enable PC users to have consolized control set-ups.

With the current rate of in-game development, I’d say that if it would be plausible, it would take a pretty long while to implement.

I’d say two or three years if Anet wants to but yea i never really been comfortable with a M/KB set up since i’ve grown up as a console gamer so i would love controller support for GW2.

I’m really tired of playing on PC and with the PS4 on the horizon i’ll buy that, the latest console i bought was 10 years ago, the PS2. I don’t really know why ArenaNet isn’t pushing GW2 for console when there are like 2 or 3 mmorpgs releasing this or next year for PS4 (and failbox).
I tried the combat mode for GW2, it played more like Tera and it was 100x more fun.
Consoles are the future of gaming, they get more powerful each time and they also stay pretty cheap.

I don’t know but GW2 need to release on console, atleast PS4.

Because the controls don’t fit it. NO, NO, NEVER. Not to forget to mention the fact that console developers have issues with needing to “clear” patches, which would totally throw a wrench in the cog of hot-patches.

No no no no no no NEIN NEIN NEIN. You’re effectively asking to destroy GW2 as a AAA game and have it thrown next to all multiplay garbage. Don’t agree. Good games are almost always exclusive, for a reason. You don’t know because GW2 doesn’t need to release on consoles.

and reported for using “failbox”. Don’t be that obvious next time.

Having it on console would seriously reduce the content we get in the future and basically just cut the life expectancy by half. I’m gonna use FFXI as an example but only because it’s the only mmo that’s already suffered from this. I know it’s old but it will happen again when the new consoles come out.

Basically FFXI was made for PS2 and PC to begin with, and then added Xbox 360 support later. The game has been very much held back by the PS2 support because they can’t just shut it off. Shutting it off randomly would anger thousands of players that still play on the PS2 console and they would lose all them people most likely. They have had issues for years on how much content they can add in each update just because they have to make sure it runs on PS2, and while PC’s over time get better and better, consoles don’t. It’s kinda like bottlenecking yourself with no easy way out so I highly doubt ANet would even attempt this.

Consoles are becoming more advanced but until they add the ability to upgrade them yourself like a PC, they will never keep up. Also console developers like Sony and Microsoft will never make that an option simply because of the price they’re now able to charge for the new consoles. The hype for a new console allows them to charge such a high price which wouldn’t be possible if they were just running off upgrading, not to mention other companies manufacturing parts and selling them cheaper.

Actually the reason you can’t upgrade consoles yourself is because it causes fragmentation and support issues.
With consoles having standardised specs it is 100% guaranteed that all the games on the system will run exactly the same for everybody. That is EXTREMELY admirable to me. Just look at how fragmented the PC marketplace is in terms of peoples specs, this is why games have so many settings and why people feel the need to constantly buy new computers or upgrade their computers. At least consoles deter that and ensure everyones system has a specific amount of life to it.

MMO’s on console is something that only works in specific situations, with GW2’s controls I really don’t see it working very well. You also have to keep in mind that both Xbox One and PS4 require users to pay a fee to use multiplayer/online content. Why would Anet release it on a system where people are effectively paying to play but they aren’t getting money – that would be bizarre.

TESO and Destiny are two new mmorpgs that will release on console. I doubt TESO will fail on console with the combat it has, almost like Skyrim.

You can already upgrade PS3 and PS4s HDD, nothing else though. You can already use a keyboard and mouse on consoles if you want, may not work for all games though. As time goes we will probably be able to play PC games on consoles and upgrade its components just like a computer. The things with consoles are they are more effective and smarter, while a PC is usually a big chunk of metal and overprized.

If TESO, Final Fantasy and Destiny is a success i think ArenaNet would atleast consider releasing GW2 for console.

Neverwinter was designed to be on consoles as well as the PC. Console players have seperate servers, but the UI is used on all platforms and it’s appalling.

I’d looked forward to NW with some eagerness and was very disappointed to find that the UI totally ruined the game for me. I logged in for early access, created my character, cleared the tutorial and haven’t been back since.

I now believe that a game should be clearly designed, and designed well, for a particular platform. Trying to be a cross-platform seems to make a game that is neither one thing or the other.

Perhaps if they created PS4 specific servers, that PC players could guest on (but PS4 players couldn’t guest on the PC servers), it could help alot with allieviating problems with slow patching or engine upgrades being held back by the PS4 version – afterall we already know it’s possible to remain on a previous version of the game for a while after a patch (Dungeons gives you 3 hours for example before forcing you to update), so they would just need to extend that system.

The PC players would still be able to guest to play with their PS4 friends, but wouldn’t have their own optimal choice of server and anything patch-related be held back by the console players and the slow patch cycles for those systems.

I didn’t actually say that was the reason, it’s just one of the reasons why even if it was possible to upgrade a console, I highly doubt they would straight away make it happen.

Most mmo’s coming to console have a different control system and UI to other mmo’s and considering GW2 has a UI highly inspired by the standard WoW type it just wouldn’t work. Same with the control aspect. FFXIV has done something very unique in this respect and created a whole new UI and control system for the PS3/4 which the PC does not have (it has the control system if you use a gamepad but not UI). This will work but I very highly doubt ANet will create all of that simply just to make it available on consoles which could limit the games long term potential anyway. I actually hope they don’t because we have a lot more important things we need them to focus on in terms of game fixes and creating all of that would take a lot of time and resources.

Actually even though PC specs are higher, PC games aren’t made for the top specs only, because they want to get out to as many people as possible and most people don’t have the highest end system.

What ends up happening is the average system becomes more powerful and then the shift begins.

I’m against it. If you played DCUO you’d be against it as well. Every patch, update or minor fix had to run through the Playstation online team before it could be rolled out. PC and PS3 had to be rolled at at the same time and updates that were readily available on the PC were always delayed due to the Playstation online testing team. They had high res textures but wouldn’t release them on the PC because the PS3 couldn’t handle them. The PS3 had more subs, so they prioritized the requests for the PS3 over the PC requests. If GW2 goes to the Playstation I’ll look for another game that is PC only.

I liked consoles when they were dedicated gaming devices. Not so much anymore.

I do agree with FlamingFoxx, and I’ve got to say that the standardized performance is something I was a fan of as well. A game should strive to afford a unilateral experience as much as it can, IMO. ‘Leveling the playing field’ in the way that consoles always have goes a long way towards that.

Granted, nowadays with consoles moving the direction that they are, that’ll probably end up being lost as well since they’re pretty much overextending themselves and trying to be like PCs. ;-/

This is not true at all. Both Final Fantasy 11 and 14 online had console/ps players playing alongside and together perfectly fine. FF14 had NO competitive play whatsoever but I’m not so sure about 11.

If anything the type of console players that you are talking about would become fly by nighters and leave the game quicksmart. Meanwhile players like myself who own and play on both console and PC’s will have a choice which system to play on. Also those who only own a console but who like to play games like myself can then get to enjoy GW2 and could easily become long time players.

You realise that consoles can easily add a keyboard and mouse these days right? Apart from that some of us find using a controller a heck of a lot easier or a combo of controller/mouse. Example for FF14 I would use my left hand for my controller and my right hand for the mouse, it worked amazinly well.

Looking at the games systems I don’t think this title would survive on the console market, the environment there is alot harsher than the pc market both in the community and getting content out there, I last I heard microsoft charges a ridiculous amount for any content patches publishers apply and sony will prob have a similiar system, it is probably why Diablo 3 is a more or “closed” off to prevent the mass amount of patches that would be added.
It wouldn’t seem profitable and this game’s engine is far too old to be able to compete with modern game titles.

one day the’ll all be on the same server and you wont notice a difference, its a matter of time before consoles become more like PC’s, the Xbox is basically a PC anyway just has restrictions.

anyway if you want my 2cents the Xbox will one day anounce WIN8 and the same OS like apple, with all platforms its a matter of time before Games are all played on the same servers no matter the platform.

i would personally design a game for consoles and PC, seperate interfaces but give the consoles and PC’s / versions of the UI so you can use a pad or a board + mouse on either or, so not just a port.

time to stop fighting against platforms and simply embrace it, one company, one game design to end all the flack well done thats all they need.

a KB/M is only better with a Joystick for Shooter’s/MOBA/RTS/MMORPG’s like WOW.Fighting games,Hack and slash,Platformer are way easier to use with a controller. I already said it shouldn’t be to hard to implement a controller to the mix.

This game would be great on the console market you have no idea how much people would be willing to play this but can’t because WVWVW and other events where a lot of players gather is to taxing on their measly pc. I seriously had to buy a 1.5 thousand dollar gaming laptop(im at college so desktop is not an option) to be able to run WVWVW on GW2 at high settings.

If they really had to do this, like TESO is going to do it, you have to get those console players a seperate server. I know a lot of Console Players, most of them are either children (10-12 There is seriously a 11 year old child in my school playing Halo) or kittened. A small amout is normal, but I switched to the PC years ago for a reason, and I don’t want this filthy rats in my genre.

After seeing the next get console specs they would probably have to rewrite the entire engine from scratch since it is way too single core dependant. Not that it would be a bad thing, quite the opposite since it could help the PC version as well. However IMO the odds of that happening are close to 0.

Not that it would be a bad thing, quite the opposite since it could help the PC version as well. However IMO the odds of that happening are close to 0.

Rewrite their entire engine from scratch??? No like stated by someone else on this thread the Next Gen of consoles are using PC like Hardware so porting it would only require a few modifications to the engine like UI, Controller Support and handling the consoles OS that is it. I bet Anet could pull this off withought even making this game Consolized just by modifying the GW2 UI for the consoles seperately.

Sure… and the game would run at 10 FPS since the main thread would run at 1,6GHz instead of 3+.

That would be on probably the highest settings… most likely if it ever happens the game would run at 720p/ with GW2 on low/medium settings running at 60fps which is no dealbreaker. Planestide 2 one of the most demanding games on the PC is coming to the PS4 so GW2 really shouldn’t be a problem spec wise.
Anyway yea sure GW2 might never come i’m just saying their is a possibility.

No they would definitely have to implement a new engine if they want to compete on the next gen console cycle, the current games engine doesn’t even support subdivided surfaces (if it is, it isn’t shown), the geometry is faceted which indicates that everything is pretty much has a low poly count, textures don’t trim off correctly, like from brickwork then a sudden sharp line to wooden planks – they have great texture painters for both the RGBA and displacement maps, foliage among other things are clearly on cards, sometimes you feel that the engine isn’t even fully optimised for the PC, they wouldn’t even be maximising the potential of the next gen consoles, plus all those fees that they would have to pay Microsoft and Sony for patches.
The game would not be profitable if released on the next gen consoles.

If they were released on the current cycle of consoles – then that’s a different story would probably agree with you on what you’ve said, but for next gen, definitely not.

You know nothing of multithreading, the GW2 engine and everything else on this matter. Ps2 scales far better with lower settings than GW2 and even so SOE will also have to do (or already did) a lot of work on their engine for the PS4 unless they drastically lower the quality of the game.
Solutions like “lowering the res” and “putting the settings on medium” wont solve the problem which again (for the blind) is single core dependency. Not to mention all the other differences between the consoles OS and Windows at which point you might as well do it proper – from scratch.

Indeed GW2 isnt even properly optimized for most PCs as it is too demanding on single thread CPU performance.
And as far as the current console gen is concerned – hell no. Ever heard of programming for the Cell CPU? Or trying to fit things into 512MB of memory? Nothing is impossible but the result would be ugly (GW1 level of GFX) and not worth the investment.

Was gonna stop responding to this thread since it seems that majority of guys here don’t even want it. But anyway my 450 dollar Toshiba LAPTOP was running on Guild Wars 2 at around 15-20 fps during WVWVW and 30 FPS at all other times on those settings and it was running an amd apu a8 series which clocks at about 1.6 ghz each core (quad core). It seems like you are vastly underestmating what next-gen consoles and developers could do on those systems.

It doesn’t matter what PC users don’t want, what matters is what console users want. If it’s coming for PS4 it’s not the PC users vote who counts but the console users. It seems like most PC users are ignorant and selfcentered. “CONSOLES SUCKS OMFG release GW2 for PS4 and i keeel youu!!”, more mature than a 12 year old.
