Supposedly… What I remember from that is all from memory, so I could be remembering it wrong… (I’m not at home to look it up.)
One of the Devs said the entire reason they did the Great Collapse in Divinity’s Reach was because that was supposed to be the Canthan section of the city.
But they were told to destroy it because it took inspiration from a lot of eastern cultures architecture, not any single one of them…
Apparently, someone (possibly from NCsoft) thought that such a look would offend some people…

I know there is an entire thread here on the forums devoted to bringing back Cantha, so that might be a good place to look if you wanted the full story, rather then what I can dredge up from my (arguably faulty) memory. lol

From what I heard from various people on the forums, Japan, China and Korea weren’t happy that their cultures were mixed together.

Cantha offends no one until we let it. The Kurzicks and Luxon were offensive to whom? It’s only KC that people think ‘might’ be offensive. Anet can change the city architecture to favela looks.

Don’t let them squirm out through a loophole people.

But then how would you bring back Cantha without the Asian cultural influences? Just make the whole thing inspired by China? GW:Factions was more closely related to China lore than Japan or Korea because of the Zodiac theme of the story.

I don’t think this is a question of letting them ‘squirm out through a loophole’.
At least some of the Developers wanted to go back to Cantha.
But as usual, it wasn’t the Developers that made that call…

In truth, the entire thing makes me shake my head.

It’d probably work better if they picked a single culture to base it on, but I’m not sure how accurate to lore that’d be.

I’d probably say they could just use one style and it wouldn’t clash with the lore.

Lorewise, no-one actually knows what’s going on in Cantha because they closed their borders – both in and out – on pain of death. The last anyone heard was that the Ministry of Purity was running the country.

Agree with the last post. Make it whatever way they want. The Zephyr of the Winds or whatever blimp nonsense they threw at us looked Canthan-like. This is happening, its just a matter of what it looks like when its done.

Or they could just make it look like it fell out of David Bowie’s kitten like the new Lion Arch.

NCSoft wasn’t wanting to go along with it. It wasn’t a simple “people were offended” sort of thing, but a business decision.

An out that Anet has is that it’s been over 200 years since we were in Cantha last. If it comes out in GW2, they can make it look like modern day Tokyo. That’ll avoid a lot of the cultural discord.

Daniel Dociu already created an Asian themed concept art piece. Anet can just use this as the blueprint for modern day Cantha.

Honestly i dont mind not getting cantha or not getting elona (ok who am i joking i am annoyed) but its more id like to get some new scenery. cantha and elona were very distinct and that made it exciting. I dont think HoT will be as distinct

Don’t get your hopes up. As much as I’d like to go back to Cantha or Elona, it won’t happen anytime soon if ever. It took more than 3 years (assuming HoT comes out this year – I’m sure it’ll be after the 3rd year anniversary) for the first expansion, where we will get like 2 zones. There are other places we may need to visit, if we are serious about killing Elder Dragons. Far Shiverpeaks – Jormag, Crystal Desert – Kralkatorrik, Ring of Fire – Primodrus, and the Deep Sea Dragon as well. Considering the pace of things right now, we are approximately 5 (real life) years away from killing off the Elder Dragons we know about. Getting a new continent would be a miracle at this point. Sorry for the not so positive tone.

If done properly, GW2 has enough lore to last for 8 to 10 years. That’s more than enough time to kill all 5 Elder Dragons, as well as visit Cantha. It’s only a matter of time until we have the airships take asura to Cantha to establish direct gate access. Then Evon can expand his empire of trade across the sea.

The only source for that is the excuse that was handed down for Cantha’s omission from GW2. There is no factual basis to it whatsoever.

Most of us can only based the speculations off of the anonymous former Dev. But we’ve since accepted that Cantha was removed, as per the huge Cantha thread.

Back on topic, with the inclusion of Nika, as well kitten many hints about the Zephyrites having visited this “far away land” and absorbing part of their culture into their airship, I’m hoping Colin give us what we all want. Personally, I would give up killing all remaining Elder Dragons to be able to visit Shing Jea, and have some Alliance Battles with the Kurzicks and Luxon.

I just dug up the old factions box. It has a beautiful poster of Nika. And that was only the normal edition. Poster, booklett with lore info and illustrations. I miss the days when games where shipped with boxxes full of physical collector shinies.

I dont think Cantha will return soon personally.

I find this more positive than negative…. with HoT we might or might not kill the second elder dragon….. there are already rumors that mordermorth kill won’t be included, just with an additional living story season. But if we do kill him in the expansion and we count with one elder dragon every 3 year thats still 12 year for the remaining 4 left. But if we kill him after 1 year of living story, that number could go up to 16 years.

Also considering the expansions in GW2 looks, well, lets say significantly smaller than we are used to ( Region vs Continent) , getting Cantha could require about 3-4 GW2 expansion meaning if we do get cantha after the last elder dragon, getting full scale Cantha would be in 2039 in the earliest

Definitely not.

Cantha and Elona getting added are very low on the probability scale. Anet seems dead set on the whole “exterminate the dragons” plotline. Which is sad, this world had so much going on without the dragons in GW1, dunno why they even needed to be added.

I think we should get Cantha because the way the humans are currently now one homogeneous blob of Krytan culture with no diversity whatsoever is honestly way more offensive than adding an incredibly diverse region that long-time players love.

If anything, according to LS2, the pact was gearing up to face the Crystal dragon(can’t remember how to spell its name) as it stands, there is zero need to go to Cantha. I’m all for going there, but unless it fits with the story, its.not going to happen(they.didn’t do SAB because it didn’t fit with the story.)
