I’m betting that those who reached r50 didn’t do it to reach there per se. They must have had other goals like playing with friends or whatever and got the points as a result of that.

Close. They just did the PvP farm and claim the title of “Pro Button Smasher.”

Ugh….and it’s because of people like the OP that we got ascended.

“Well, I rushed through everything, forgot to smell the roses so to speak, now I’m bored. Give me another external motivator – ie carrot- because I don’t know how to entertain myself” is exactly what this amounts to.

We do not need more stat climbing. NO MORE!

We do need:
better boss mechanics,
more emphasis on playing something other than pure dps,
additional skills and interesting ways to find/unlock them (hi ho, hi ho, if off skill hunting we go!),
better pet AI (cmon boys, you had it in GW1 for ranger pets! minions and spirits, not so much, but still, we know you can do it),
and so on…

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

After I finish crafting this weekend, I plan on taking a long break. Tired of the 2 week checkoff events. I’m just not seeing any long term content, that would come with an expansion pack.

I would consider killing stronger NPCs.

Right. NPCs with more health and stats. That’s what I meant. In the end, no one is getting stronger. It’s just the numbers that are inflating.

I know it’s supposed to be a good thing – no gear treadmill etc. But after playing crazily for over a year, getting a legendary and ascended weapons I have nothing more to do and haven’t logged in for two weeks!

I wish there was something like “infinite leveling up” where I always have some newer and better goal to achieve. Always some better and stronger armor, or something like that. As things stand now I just feel like I’ve done everything.

Does anyone else feel this way?

No, but then again I am employed full time.

Not necessarily. Simply saying “stronger” could mean a lot of things, which is an issue with communication. We cannot read your mind, so a vague term like ‘stronger’ could mean something entirely different to someone else. Which Calae demonstrated nicely. In order to get your meaning, you need to be very clear and precise in the wording you choose.

This is part of the issue people have with Anet. Anet says “A” meaning “A” but someone interprets it to actually mean “B” then get’s ticked off when Anet gives them “A” and not “B.”

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

This is the problem with catering to the carrot style of gamer.

Once they reach the carrot… they want another carrot. GJ “breaking” the mold their Anet.

Cannot wait to see the first expansion:

Level increase to 90, takes as long as it took to get from 1-80 to get 80-81 and it triples each level!!
New Transended equipment! Only got from World Bosses! Take on the new Shatterer and get a .001% each time to get it!

I am extremely confused to what other kinda game exist? All games are carrots on a stick when you boil them down to there bottom lines.

Games have evolved over the year’s and the carrot is no longer beating the game. These day’s the carrot is working towards a goal typically some type of treasure. I really cant think of a single example that does not revolve around some kinda carrot here are some examples.

Mario Bros. – July 14, 1983 – The Carrot was saving the princess

The Legend of Zelda July 29, 1987 – The carrot was simply beating the game defeating the end game boss

Doom December 10, 1993 – The carrot was saving the world by beating the game.

Diablo December 31, 1996 – Carrot was leveling and getting loot to progress your character.

I could keep going mentioning more and more games. The bottom line is there is always a carrot aka a goal to achieve. What the op is saying is he no longer feel’s that goal exist. I can sorta feel his pain right now the thing keeping me in GW2 is my friend’s.

That’s really the point of MMOs. Making friends and playing together. The OP seems to not have friends or people to play with.

Being a part of a community gives longevity to how much gametime you spend. Who would actually play an MMO lone wolf style? That would be incredibly boring. Having laughs and hardships in an MMO community is golden.

OP I think you should try single player games. IMO it seems like they would suit you better.

OP, just chill til ascended armor comes and you’ll have another little goal to complete. Won’t be more than 3 months. Nothing wrong with taking a break until something relevant to your interests is added (this applies to all players, not just the ones who crave vertical progression).

I quickly skimmed your post history. Clearing you are one of those players that must have a carrot to chase. You admitted it with your opening post.

Either this game is just not for you, or you need to discover new reasons for playing. Your very first forum post was about how WvW had zero rewards for time spent. This is a clear sign that you don’t participate in at least some activities just for the simple goal of having fun.

There is nothing wrong with that. I am very different in that respect. I like to collect and gather certain things that I think are interesting or have a purpose but I can also fill hours and hours doing many different things that have no progression at all.

You should not feel obligated to play a game that is not enjoyable and neither should Anet feel obligated to keep serving up things for you to chase after “crazily”.

The game was designed to have a limited gear treadmill so that you could take time off and yet return later without being far behind the bulk of the population. If I were in your shoes I would take a break and comeback in a few months or so. Coming here to get people to agree with you is not going to accomplish anything except add fuel to your negative feelings through confirmation and reinforcement of the problem. The other problem is that when people don’t agree with you and offer contrary advice and opinions you will just feel more vindicated and cemented in the funk.

I would play an MMO lone wolf style. 3653 hours of mostly playing by myself as I adventure throughout the world. Sometimes I meet people but most of the time I just do my own thing. I have 3 people on my friends list, one is a close real life friend that used a free trial weekend and assures me he will buy the game someday, and two people that are rarely ever logged on.

I enjoy my time in game a great deal. Please do not judge people based on a narrow vision of what you consider to be normal. It is wide variety of player types that make your community interesting and they contribute to making the in game world vibrant often in ways many players take for granted.

Cosmetic progression works just as well. This game just doesn’t have it. There is no incentive to go out there and collect skins since doing that just results in you having less bank tabs. You will never get to use most of those skins since changing out skins is such a convoluted process.

Give us proper cosmetic progression with a convenient wardrobe system to facilitate it all and players will be hooked.

That’s a flawed thought. Better and more interesting mechanics can be added to mobs that are no stronger than existing ones.

Stat inflation can only result in one of two things:

  • Oppositions numbers go up to match, meaning you stay the same relative to the opposition
  • Opposition numbers stay the same, meaning that fights get easier for you

I posted on this thread yesterday, didn’t know it was going to get this much attention.

I also predicted this. Just as soon as Ascended armors are released and everyone is covered head to toe in pink garbage, there will be more suggestions for a higher tier for the sake of “character progression.”

This game is doomed, knowing ArenaNet it’s only a matter of time before they cater to these suggestions AGAIN. Prove me wrong, oh wait you can’t because it already happened and what’s their excuse? “Oh guys don’t worry this was meant to be in the game before launch we are sorry!”

Fact is that if ArenaNet releases another tier, they will be shooting themselves on the same foot they foolishly shot themselves on back in November 2012.

They’ve basically said they were going to add more utility skills…

Imagine a 4th tier that requires you have all of the 1, 3 and 6 point class skills and they cost about 80 skill points each. That could take a while to fill in even with a pile of skill point scrolls from champ farming. How about a 3rd tier of Elite skill choices at 100 skill points each?

Or having to cough up 200 skill points to enable the use of a new weapon type. That would DEFINITEY create some horizontal progression that’s far from quick.

Or 50 point a whack to unlock new traits beyond the I to XII we have now.

There’s still quite a bit of horizontal progression that can be added inside the current cap.

Then its going to ensue. Because that’s all but a given for how further progression is going to work. The only difference is you might have to do so questing IN ADDITION TO the skill point costs to open up the new options.

Right now a character is mostly a choice of class, setting 2-6 weapons (depending on class and 1h/2h choices), 3 utility skills, an elite skill, assigning 70 trait points, and selecting traits. A little wiggle room on runes/sigils as some of them alter gameplay meaningfully beyond the balance of stats/numbers.

Every one of those choices can have more options added without even glancing at level cap or new gear tier. We’ve seen a number of new stat combinations on gear added without an expansion. No reason to think they can’t continue to expand the array of options AND put some serious barriers to entry on the new choices that will keep people logging in and playing/paying.

For some players, the carrot chasing is the goal
For others its just the aesthetics.

I’m 1,200 hours into the game, that’s about the time spent for MW2+BOPs+BF2 multiplayers according to my steam. But I’m at the end of my ropes now for this game, for the past week I just show up for dailies and log right back off. I have nothing to work for, nothing to work towards. The game focused so much on gold instead of actual progression, that it ruined it for me. I would love to use a foefire shield because it matches my guardian’s avenger shield, but I can’t work towards it outside of gold farming.

You know what the really nice thing about GW2 is? No monthly fees. That way, if you get bored, or feel burned out?
You can just try out some other game or activity. Or have a P2P-MMO on the side, fulfilling all your gear-treadmill needs, for when you have rushed through all the current living story achievements and need a different carrot.

Seriously, I can’t think of a single MMO out there that has less gear-treadmill than GW2 (or GW1) – and there are actually people who enjoy GW2 (and only GW2/GW1) for exactly this reason. Please leave us our one MMORPG without excessive necessary gear-grind and just go play something different when you run out of carrots to chase in GW2.

OP, no offense towards you, but honestly, IMO your resentment is misplaced. Wasnt GW2 ment to be a game without gear threadmill from the get-go? Wasnt this one of the key aspects advertised? I understand people feeling angry about introduction of Ascended gear (which is exactly what you want I assume) becouse it violates that concept which was part of the game’s origin. But why you criticize something that was, in all honesty, one of the selling points of this game? There are plenty of games on the market where constant gear progression is the main gameplay element, WoW being the most prominent one. But there are plenty of WoW clones in this aspect if you dont like Azeroth. Why didnt you seek to get into one of those? Why play a game which was supposed to be different and then ask that game to stop being different?

The other MMO that shall not be named makes it easier to keep up on the treadmill as more patches are released.

In GW2; a new player entering the game today will take them 4 months to collect the laurels for their ascended accessories. That’s assuming they don’t skip a single monthly or daily. That’s far from casual. You could argue that it’ll take them a year of casual play; and that’s just for ONE of their characters.

This game is one of the worst grinds I have ever experienced.

Personal Character Growth

  • Skills (inc. swappable weapon skills)
  • Skill Customisation (Scrap the passive traits [+dmg, -cooldown] and add them as options to attach to skills with a clause. So, for example, you have the skill, you then select the clause [for example, if bleeding] and then you select the effect if you meet the clause [for example, deals 20% extra damage], so the entire skill description would be [Deals X damage. If the target is bleeding, then this skill deals 20% extra damage]. Limiting what effects you can have with certain clauses, as well as what skills can be customised, would aid balancing while creating more viable choices.)
  • Traits
  • Traitline expansion (i.e. a fourth Trait slot that you earn in a task related to that traitline. Doesn’t even need to increase stats)
  • Trait Points (through tasks, not simply leveling, much like the extra attribute points in GW1)

Granted, AI and mob variety would have to be developed to make this remotely useful

Character progression within the game world

  • A missed opportunity was rising in the ranks of your Order. Randomly assigned Order Missions, doing events / dungeons related to your Order ect.
  • Gaining favour in areas to reduce waypoint costs, merchant costs ect.

THIS IS PROGRESSION!

increasing level cap is tread mill. not progression.

The problem is… you can make as many nice suggestions as you like (and I honestly think they would make a game EPIC), no developer will implement them, for a few simple reasons. One, creating such a complex system of progression, would take up a lot of money. Two, some people might not like it, however interesting it is. Three, they would probably change so much about the original idea that it became only a shade of it, such as Living Story, which isn’t living at all.
