Didn’t Anet say something about a Mad Memoires Collection to be released during Halloween 2016, because it wasn’t release-ready for Halloween 2015?

Will the collection for the Mad Memoirs back pieces be released next week?

Was it simply forgotten?

I was really looking forward to this, but there is no sign of a Mad Memoires Collection on the horizon.

I’m not sure why but it looks like the only changes made to Halloween this year were a few new rewards and the removal of DR from the Lab.

They did talk about doing a lot more but for whatever reason it got scrapped.

I am glad that it didnt come back, being exclusive to being there at Halloween 2012 is what makes it special.

Yes its so special you hardly see it. In fact the only time I see it is when I’m on my necron because I have both skins. No one cares at all. No one has ever asked me what it is.

I have seen it occasionally. It’s an old skin, so that is why you see it so rarely.

And I kind of agree with Malediktus. It’s great that this game has some exclusive items what you can get only once. I have both Mad Memoires skins as well, but I have missed some items I can’t get anymore, like Wings of the Sunless.

For a game as heavily focused on cosmetics as GW2 is, there is a rather high amount of skins that are no longer obtainable. While there is some merit to have skins exclusive to a certain piece of content that is no longer available (even though Halloween is available every year…..), these should be extremely limited. Exclusive titles are a better choice to give out as exclusive items, that indicate you participated in achievements that were only around a limited time.

There are barely any exclusive items left if you think about it. A lot of them have been released. There are over 4000 skins you can unlock and I would be hard pressed to find 50 skins that you can no longer aquire.

Exclusivity should be more associated with skill or time investment than being present for a 1 week event 4 years ago, which not everyone was able to attend imo. GW2 is not the sort of game that should be bogged down on exclusivity based on being there at the right time. It’s one of the reasons LS1 and the Karka Event were unpopular.

Unpopular? I still think LS1 was the best LS so far. I dont like the instanced living story instances at all.

At the time, the concept of ls1 being temporary and playable only to those at the time was hugely unpopular. That doesnt mean ppl didnt like it or prefer it. You arent the only who liked it that i have seen and id be lying if there werent isolated bits i fondly remember. However, it was widely panned by the community in general plus pockets of the media for not being replayable and led to the instanced, replayable stories that came after.

Im not against exclusivity, but I am against items being unavailable simply because it isnt 2012 anymore. There is no viable reason items like Mad Memories, the Scythe etc shouldnt be available every halloween in some way. It is better for the game and the wider community to lock prestige and exlusivity behind skill or time investment instead.

For example are the AP armours. I see someone with the later parts of those, i can appreciate the time and effort gone into those and that know person was dedicated enough to drive themselves through the achievements, all the while knowing that goal is still achievable for me. Mad Memories has no such prestige or awe and just says to me they logged in during a single week in 2012.

This is the point that I think some people are missing. There is a difference between a skin that represents true skill to obtain (eg an exclusive skin that was given out to the 5 people on the winning team of the world championships would be awesome) and a skin that was essentially handed out to someone who happened to have been playing at the time. Some skins should be like that, but very few. Few enough to be able to count on one hand really (a skin that shows whether you were a Beta tester for the game, another for beta testers for HoT, 1 exclusive skin that showed you completed LWS1 etc…).

The problem with exclusive skins in this game is that by far most of them are timegated and not skillgated, which is why some people have a problem with them. Something that is time gated should have a title at most, if not just AP, just like the current PvP achievements for the new maps. This type of stuff is no different from the other historical achievements that gave out exclusive skins.

It is hard to skillgate something if there is no content which requires skill and cannot be cheesed. Even raids can easily be cheesed by buying raid kills or getting carried by friends.

That is why rewards in MMOs are usually gated behind effort and time and not skill.
And Anet will never add content that requires true skill if the outcry about the raids (which got lower difficulty than dungeons in Wildstar) is big already.

Then that should be a greater priority to be fixed than locking away old skins arbitrarily. Liadri is a good example of completing something skill based and getting a mini as a reward. Im sure a section of players will look at Liadri as being too easy, but im betting most ppl attempting gauntlet saw Liadri as a personal triumph to perservere towards. It is one reason I want to see Gauntlet return (albeit buffed to counter the power creep).

The Llama minis represent another skill based achievement. Again, im sure many will counter that by suggesting how easy or it can be cheesed, but to many of us, it represents players who showed skill and dedication in pvp.

I think a game is more fun and interesting when a few things in it are exclusive and there are several types of exclusivity:

  • By cost: fun for the rich, something for the less-rich to covet, and a gold sink for the economy.
  • By game mode: rewards for those who like PvP vs WvW vs PvE vs Raids vs Fractals
  • By skill: skins tied to JPs or raids.
  • By longevity: birthday rewards require you to have played for long enough.
  • By perseverance, aka Strong Bladder rewards: virtually everything tied to meta rewards in HoT is like this. You have to play a lot.
  • By RNG: not that many people are fans of this, but it does encourage people to open various bags, so the rest of us can get the rest of the contents more cheaply.
  • By right time + right place: Mad Memoires is one of the few remaining such items. It was nearly free if you were around for the first Halloween and otherwise unavailable.

In short, the game is full of exclusive items already. It makes the rewards more interesting. I am okay with the idea that there will be some things I never get because something in RL was more important than some reward in a game I really like. Especially since the vast, vast majority of rewards in the game are available to any of us.

Yes that is pretty much what I am saying. Missing out because you werent in during that time window is what made it unpopular (well the main reason anyway). Same with Mad Memoires.

I’d like to see Mad Memories come back too.

I have the first version, but I missed out on the complete version because my main character was only about level 30 and couldn’t survive in the maps I needed to go to. My guild offered to carry me through it but I stupidly assumed GW2 Halloween would work like GW1 Halloween, with the same events every year so I told them I’d do it myself the next year.

I kind of wish I’d accepted their help, but it still wouldn’t be the same as actually completing the scavenger hunt myself. There’s no prestige in an item that was handed to you for zero effort. Like the wizard’kitten, I like it because it’s a cool skin but there’s nothing impressive about having it, no one’s going to be impressed that at some point in the past you pressed a button on the TP.

That’s why I don’t see the point of limited time items. Even the ones that require some effort from the player usually can’t be anything really special because people have to be able to do it in the short time available. Even the Season 1 meta-achievement rewards usually come down to “Press F 500 times on different things and kill 200 themed enemies”, not anything anyone would actually be proud of or that you couldn’t have done in any other random week of the year.

But more importantly a lot of these, Mad Memories in particular, are very unique skins. Which means many people who have them will never use them because they don’t suit their characters and other people could do something really amazing with them but can’t because they can’t access them.

I very rarely stop to admire someone’s character because they have a single specific item, as I said the majority of “special” ones in this game aren’t really a big achievement to get. But I love seeing how people combine them, there’s some amazing looks players can put together and that I will stop and appreciate. But they can’t do that if the skins are inaccessible.

Aw, man. I’m sorry you didn’t take them up on the offer. Not just because you’d have the unlock now, but because escorting low-levels through the later quests was some of the most fun my guild had during the first Halloween. Without healing druids or ‘healineers’ and without squads to keep track of everyone, it was quite the challenge and both the escorted and the escorter were quite pleased when we managed to do it.

As great as the backpiece is, it is not just about that. It is about the lore it represented as well. There was great lore in doing that collection which is now gone and needs to be put back. I loved making the Mad Memoirs. I did my first mini dungeon with it at the northern part of Gendaren fields. I enjoyed searching throughout LA looking for the ghosts that told their grisly tales of what happened to them while making the book. It was, all of it, a great bit of lore that I have missed and hope somehow they put back in this Tuesday. I know there are ghosts that need to be placed in other parts now due to the areas replaced but I hope they are. I hope we i get to do this again because it is what made Halloween and Mad King Thorn all the better. Right now I doubt most people even really know about him. They just see him as some comical villain and that’s it. There is no real context behind him unless you read up and wiki him. I was sad they never really continued this story either. It really would have been fantastic.

Halloween 2016 has no Mad Memories, has no Lunatic Inquisition, has no challenge in Mad King Labyrinth because it’s easier, requires insane amount of grinding because diminishing returns was removed to allow grinding of 120.000 Pieces of Candy Corns, and no dynamic events were added to all Halloween events since 2012.

Will all the grinding required now, this event is no longer fun. As it was, repeated the same every year, at least it was fun by taking a break from other content. Now it’s stressful, only rewarding new items for huge amount of brainless work, while old rewards slowly get removed, such as Mad Memories.

I don’t know. Only took a couple/3 days to earn the upgrade for the Home Instance. That’s new, and I rather like it. I still have a couple of Cobs, and there’s the new Husk mini, though I’m not real fond of it.

There’s new weapons that cost little on the TP, (because they seem to drop pretty often). Refractors aren’t that super rare.

I’m all for more/returning/new Halloween content, but it’s not as dire as some make out. Would be nice if the Raven mini dropped from bags; 120 cobs is a bit much.

To be fair though, new minis and new aura items aren’t exactly new content though.
