I’ve been waiting for this since I got to lvl 20 on my engi.
That was like a year ago, and by that time the post on engi front page was 9 months old.

The other features are nice and all, but engi community asks for hobbosack fix/botton to hide for a long time now and anet doesn’t even say: kitten you we keeping it. They just don’t comment.
That’s dissapointing.
I don’t even care if attacks don’t have effects or anything, I just want to see my weapons and backs.

Fix hobbosacks for engi pls!

Please MTV pimp my ride!!!!!

Sorry for bad english, it’s not my mother tongue.

Agreed, ANET should execute the removal of the hobosacks. Maybe make it so that when your back item is not hidden, your hobosack is displayed.

Or at least make them look not so ugly.

Charr have no gods! If you want your hobo sacks removed, you need to get some pitchforks and torches and march down to Anet’s HQ!

Or, you can find a nice, friendly Asura to build an invention that warps the Eternal Alchemy just enough to change Anet’s priorities.

Or, keep praying I guess…..

Uh, not exactly. One’s design may depend upon not having either an hobosack or a backpack.
It would be better to have a separate setting for them. Else you end up being forced to show a backpack to cover an hobosack.
Not showing anything at all should be a choice as well, imho.

I must point out once again that there is no connection between back items and the hobosacks.

The hobosacks are a visual aspect of a utility skill. much like the elementalist wrist auras are for elemental attunements.

Back items are actually “existing” items with stats and a constant image.

Equipping a kit (activating the utility skill) overrides the shown back item. BUT once you use another skill, that override is gone, thus your back item and your hobosack clip and glitch through each other, because they are two separate entities. Not even the same type.

Thats why connecting this issue with the back item visibility toggle is not as easy as it would seem, i think.

There is. If you got an engi with a visible backpiece (pick one thats good visible.. like the slickpack or fractal backpiece or whatever) draw a kit. The backpiece is gone then…TILL you use any skill\attack you got.. then you got the glitch galore that we complain over in the engi forum since a long time. Try it out

Thats what im talking about. If there was a clear connection, like a switch (meaning that if one is active the other cannot be active), the hobosack-toggle on Show Back Item checkbox would be as easy as many make it out to be.

But there is no such connection. The hobosacks are not back items. They are not Items. They are not equipment. They are in fact a visual aspect of a skill that goes active on the activation of the Kit utility skill (with the one-time “hide the back item” command) and stays that way until you switch weapons. For some buggy reason the “hide the back item” command is forgotten as soon as we use another skill, but the “show kit backpack visual” remains active as long as you use that kit. Fixing that, i guess, would be just as big an effort as giving the option to outright disable the backpack visuals. Might be even easier, if they can isolate the command.

Engineers are the last played profession in the game. I’m sure that it’s on a list somewhere for someone to work on when they get time, but it’s definitely not a priority of any kind. Anet knows about the problem and Colin has acknowledged the problem.

But it can’t be a priority because it’s for only one profession and the least played profession at that.

No hobbo sack fix *sigh*

And the fact that the game being tailored to be focused on customizable aesthetics and that the kit backpacks go directly against that factor has nothing to do with the engineer being the least played, im sure.

Anet knows about the topic, as they were kind enough to make a passing joke about it some weeks back on a video discussing professions’ strengths and weaknesses. Colin acknowledged the problem a year ago, leaving and forgetting about it ever since.
(Thanks for the red dev-response patch though, im sure it helped to keep the thread up and going for more than a year on the 1st page on engineer subforum. That and the fact that nothing has been done about it still.)

As for priorities, somehow stuff that nobody noticed, nobody cares about and nobody had an actual issue with are added or “fixed” left and right every patch.

So yeah, its not a priority. Doesnt mean it couldnt or shouldnt have been fixed.

The reason that you cannot hide the kits is that they need to be visible to other players – it’s a PvP thing.

Just as your weapon is visible to other players, so that they might be able to anticipate what you are going to do based on what weapon you are wielding, the kits serve the same purpose.

It’s about visibility, which is why it will never change.

I suppose they could change it for PvE only, but one can only guess if they think doing the work is worthwhile for one playmode

That said, a general graphic update wouldn’t be a terrible thing.

Please provide your scientific evidence or poll data to support your “assumption”. I have no problem with the kit backpacks (to be honest, I hate all the flashy, cutsie, or over-blown effects back pieces most players run around in). That being said, I wouldn’t turn down more options on customizing how my characters look.

Did it ever dawn on you the reason Anet does not appear to care is that your perception of how many people HATE the backpacks is actually closer to 10 than those that like them or are simply indifferent to them?

So you tell me you need a backpack that you only see from behind proper, (or if you fight an asura) or not at all without zooming in to know what the engineer is using?
Last time i checked the handheld flamethrower with that… obvios flame jet that extends your direction MIGHT be a good indicator, or that to the game unique attacking sound of the elixir cannon that also MIGHT catch your eye with its unique to that kit beige coloured rifle and its slow moving projectiles. It MIGHT be also helpfull to take a look at the wrench the engineer is trying to wack into your face that he holds in his hand, or that suddenly AOE cyrcles apear a second after the engineer bends down right arround his feet, also if suddenly round thingies fly slowly your way and leave aoe behind that MIGHT be grenades. If you fight an engineer in PVP you prolly dont got enough time to check his\her backpack before you drop dead from rather obvios and different kit attacks man. The backpieces of tool and bomb kit even look the same and if you wear a bigger back item (like the slickpack) they glitch together and you cant tell at all whats going on back there. They are a cool idea without a question.. and i can understand why people enjoy them… but not all people do and thats why we sorta kinda.. kitten about it. A checkbox to hide em and if it REALLY matters so much to pvp.. add a thingy like the attument eles got with the icon of the kit and done.

NO! They need some type of way to track what the engi is doing. If they did this, I wouldnt know if I could get Magnet or anything. Its like asking for the warrior to have no visual cues before kill shot or eviscerate.

OP: Please hide all visual tells on engi so I can do whatever and the oppoent has no idea what to expect.

Sure its a nice plea for your class, but you gotta realize kits are powerful and tehres a reason for the visual tell. Its not always for you, or your class. Its for players to see “Watch Out”

Did you actually use Magnet as an example of a dangerous skill that needs huge tells like Kill shot? Like.. with the big-kitten magnet the engineer is holding out toward you during the activation of the skill which makes it just as visible as spectral grasp or scorpion wire? And a pull effect that gets glitched by the slightest escalation?

The backpacks are the poorest excuse of a visual tell you can think of. Its on the back of the character facing you for crying out loud! You sooner see and hear the dozens of unique skill effects in use during their activation time than from the hobosacks.

The entire PvP viewpoint of the issue is invalid now anyway with standardized character models coming out. If you need oh-so “obvious” tells as the hobosack, enable that option. Im sure that will still have the hobosacks for your convenience and your viewing pleasure.

I think the best argument is that weapons have different skins, so should kits.

But I really doubt you’re going to get complete invisibility, for the reasons I stated above.

Nobody asks for that lol. We just dont like the backback skins ruining the visuals. The weapons you get with a kit (cept bombs and grenade kit cause you dont hold a weapon while using them) are a whole different theme and nobody asks about removing those.

…albeit, having legendary weapons effects properly working with kits wouldn’t be that bad…

Anyway, the whole “backpack as visual cue” makes no sense. Any other class just has the weapons on their hands. So should engineers.
You don’t need an huge sheath on the back of a warrior to tell that they’re using a greatsword. You don’t need an huge backpack on the back of an engi to tell thtat they’re using a flamethrower.

I’ll grant the flamethrower and elixir gun (even though they look similar).

I’ll even grant that typically in PvP, people don’t really have time to look at things like this, and that in a zerg you can’t see details like this anyway due to the explosion of particle effects everywhere.

But, what about grenades and bombs?

I think the problem is that it’s difficult to justify making an exception for Engineers, when every other weapon in the game is visible for a reason.

Can I hide my main hand sword? Then why should Engi’s be able to hide kits?

Regarding visual distinctiveness / visual cues as an issue:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/pvp-visual-and-reward-updates/

So, yeah, that problem is already being solved. PvP players can use the standard models if it’s that important they be able to see what weapons their opponents are using.

Bombs have the bend-down animation and the 1/2 second fuse. Grenades have the throw animation and the slow projectile speed.

You can also expect that if an engineer is having a ranged target, she will trow grenades instead of placing a bomb at her own feet for no reason. You can also expect an other engi who is kiting someone trying to be in melee that she will drop bombs in their path.

The only difficulty might arise if that engineer also uses Med kit as that can have both the bend-down and the throw animation, depending on her taking the trait for med kit. But then again there is still the fuse for the bombs, and the completely different thrown object model for the grenade. If red circles are not enough, that is. Or, again the standard models that im sure will have those very helpful backpacks indicators.
