No new race?!
Anet never promised a new race.

Bummer. I’d rather have had a new race than a new profession.
No tengu? Well, no point for me to return to this game then.
Be happy with what you get not whith what you wish to get but you don’t!
“We are now! We are forever!”
Slightly disappointed by the lack of a new race, but it still sounds awesome and I’ll definitely be picking it up.
The new profession sounds great, but I wish we had a new race to play.
New race with the current story focusin so much on Sylvari won’t fit, just saying. That would either take the focus from the sylvari or shadow the release of a new race.
At least I know I can safely relevel my lame Norn ranger into awesome human ranger with all them thomes of knowlege Ive got
I’m soooo excited about all the new content. BUT I was disappointed to see there is no new race. I agree with @Darkace.8925. I’d much rather have had a new race than a new profession.
It’s a real shame, but there is still time for them to put one in.
They did get us some good additions today. Really nice stuff. Only thing that would have been nice would new race like the tengu because many people asked it as well. So I hope it wil be added eventually. But still nice job with the new content though!
Rather have the new prof to be honest.
just think of all the added focus a new race would take the 1-80 personal story completely new for said race, i can see why they dont want to do that

If this is all it would take to make you quit, you were gonna quit anyway.
Or find something else to complain about, because lets face it. you arent gonna quit. If you were, you would have already. You are far too committed, or you wouldnt bother posting on the forums.
Have fun playing Guildwars Forever, because you Love It.
I am rather glad that there is not a new race at this time. A new race would require a story of its own, which would in turn have meant less dev time for story appropriate for all of the other races.

This is likely the reason they didn’t do it. The way the PS is designed would mean it would require way more work and effort than it would be worth, especially with the current focus of the story.
I hope it doesn’t mean we’ll never get new races, though.

If you wanted to show how smart you are by this, then you’ve just did the opposite, and i don’t even need to explain why exept for saying l2r
I’m not surprised that they haven’t mentioned a new playable race. Doesn’t mean there isn’t one necessarily, there is a helluva lot they are holding back. Still, I’ve long held the stance that a new playable race wouldn’t fit into the story right now.
Though, with the addition of new civilizations, this also offers up new potential playable races in a future expansion.
Yeah I was disappointed by that. But the rest seems cool, so I’m happy.

I can’t believe they wouldn’t use that platform to announce something as big as a new playable race. If we get one, it won’t be in HOT.

I am on much the same page. But until they say ‘nope not happening’ I never rule it out. They like their curve balls.
Ok im a bit surprised by this but a new class is what gets the most people back on the leveling treadmill again so thats the main thing.

Is this the part where you play the I already quit angle, but then somehow try to tell us why you still troll the forums?
How To Quit: Uninstall, delete all associated bookmarks to the game, the game does not exist for you anymore. – If you dump your boyfriend, do you call him everyday and talk about him to all your friends? No. You move on. Unless you still love him.
Like you love GW2
You pretty much proved your commitment to the game by hanging out here refreshing the thread to see if anyone is replying to you directly.
Until noone has to read your pointless whining again, you play gw2.
Tengu playable class? plz. Centaur: Its a man, built like a horse from the waist down. You couldnt handle that. But you could be a bird.
They said that more info would be released as beta and launch dates got closer. A new race is still not out of the question.

Come on, they would have said it if they were planning new races… You don’t “hide” something like that. You use it to build hype and attract people.
Don’t need one they have plenty really.
Yeah, stuff like a dungeon in the new map or some new twists could be there depite not being announced as they just highlighted the biggest new systems.
However, stuff like a new race or a new continent are just out of question now and could be confirmed to not make it into the game until a future expansion (assuming, Anet has decided to go with expansions from now on).
A new race would be crazy hard to add in that or you just have a race with no real story and home town but that would feel very pointless.
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)
Server : FA
I think we have enough races anyway. 5 times more races to choose from than in GW1.
Plus – each new race would need it’s own Personal Story. And then there’s another question: Should the new races be part of the same personal story against Zhaitan, so new players who choose the new race get the same experience as veteran players?
Or should it be a completely new Personal Story, meaning that there are ‘two tiers’ of personal story? Where some races get one some races get two, but you can only choose between them?
Well, I didn’t exect the tengu, anyway, and no other race has had as much fortune as them. If anything, the mursaat were the only canditates, and I saw them only once during the manifesto

As your signature states, having common sense to leave is the best thing to do. There are other MMO’ that do have new races to play.

Obviously there are no rules about how i should behave when i quit playing a game. Nothing prevents me from checking on how it’s getting developed once in 6-12 months and probably reconsidering playing it again if something sparks my interest. Nothing in the new expansion did it for me, so all i do is write my opinion on this forum and leave again.
And no, i obviously don’t love this game, i just waste time on it to do exactly that, to waste time and not think about our meaningless existence in the real world. And that’s also a reason i waste time commenting on this forum in between watching a movie.
Obviously whining is not pointless because it shows developers that they’ve missed some widely requested features in this expansion so they lost some customers and money income from them.
And well, centaurs are just plain boring. Top half is your typical human and bottom half is an ugly and once again boring real life animal. Yawn. Tengu are just much more interesting and cool in my opinion.

Man come on……… Im so disappointed.
ArenaNet will NEVER add a new race. Blame their lack of long term planning and how poorly they made the story.
Each race has its own voice actor. If they were to add a new race, how would a player go through the current game with characters from those new races? Per ArenaNet’s own rules, they would have to record again the dialogue of the ENTIRE storyline using the new voice actors. They have no money for this. So no, no new race.
Voice actors earn up to a couple of hundred dollars an hour. Seems like a lot of money to add a new race. That could really add up. A new race with as much voice acting as any single race currently in the game seems like it might take as much as 20-40 hours of work. Twice (once for each gender). That could be on the order of $16k. There is no way that Anet and GW2 could generate sufficient income to pay that kind of money.
Sixteen THOUSAND dollars. No way.
People came up with most kittened race ‘suggestions’ anyway that makes absolutely no sense to have.

I lol’d. Still, there’s more to it than just the voices. They’d have to devise an entire introductory PS segment and tie them into existing lore in a large number of areas. I hope they don’t abandon the concept totally, but I’m not surprised it isnt’ being done this time around.
What they may do, and what makes the most sense, is to introduce multiple new races simultaneously for certain continent-base expansions where they expand the pre-cap world. For example, after HoT they may have a Cantha themed expansion. This would add, say, 3 new races – Canthan human, Tengu, and something else. These would get their own PS that is different than the current 5 races and would all tie into each other in the same way.

Completely agreed.
I think that adding a race as part of an expansion, as a selling point of the expansion, would work because there is sufficient demand for that feature to offset the cost of development. Anything to be added to the game is going to cost money, the question is whether or not said addition would be a sufficiently strong selling point to offset those costs.

All I can say is, maybe we’ll see flickers of Tengu when we go after the Destroyers. I know there has been a lot of talk about the Tengu in the years, and it is obvious they are wanted. The only words that were said is that they may explore the Tengu in the future.
Oh well.
I don’t believe they’ll ever add a new race. It’s just too complicated to fit in with the way the personal story works, and they’d have to do a lot of retrofitting of existing armor to get it to work with something like the tengu.
Plus, if you’ve noticed the tengu models in game, they’re not designed to be used as a playable race. Poor customization points, and none of them really ever use actual equipment that the players have.
Would be nice to see a prominent tengu NPC though, maybe someone to tag along with DE2.0 or something.
Lol we’ve get specializations and completly new profession, something like new race is not even close to that it could wait or even never happen for me. Specializations and Revenant will provide much more fun and actual gameplay than new race.

If ArenaNet let a little hard work get in the way of progress you’d all still be playing Guild Wars.
They said long ago, it was more likely add new races over new professions.
HOWEVER, Charrs proved to be a failure “technically speaking.”
Clipping issues and the constant complains about it and about male cloths for both sex aren’t a big incentive to add another non-human race (Sylvari and Norns are just humans in diguise.)
So -as always- BLAME THE CHARRS!

It’s a lot more work to add a new race instead of a new class though. For instance, you’d need much more new art assets to have proper customization options for the characters (the current tengu models in game are very “samey” and overall bland). You’d need to flesh out an entire new city so that they would have an equivalent home that all the other races have. They might need to redo animation assets for how the character moves. You’d need to get two new voice actors to record tons of audio.
And this is all before even considering how they’d meld into the whole personal story bit since they’ve more or less abandoned that entire model of doing things. Plus you’d end up having to create new NPCs all over the place so that the race is “represented” and not just so fringe part of the whole game (i.e. put a bunch of tengu in the pact, have some prominent tengu NPCs, &c.).
Meanwhile, a new profession is much more straightforward to add into the game, and will be much easier to meld into what already exists. One concern I have for this is that they might not give it any unique voice assets (due to the fact that they’d need to get the same voice actors as previously), but the class can still be functionally implemented and integrated without any major obstacles that you’d encounter with a new race.
But hey, who knows? Maybe they’re saving it for the second expansion.
Anet never promised a new race.
They never promised a new class either before the announcement.
(the current tengu models in game are very “samey” and overall bland).
Actually, I believe there is only one model, with two skins (one red garb with brown/white feathers, the other blue with dark grey/white). That’s why they look samey – because they are

We are getting a new profession and people are still complaining about a new race? Most games do a new race OR class in an expansion. It’s rare to get both. So no, no new race. Maybe next xpac. With Mursaat becoming allies now, I wonder if it’s possible for them to become a playable race one day.
No tengu? Well, no point for me to return to this game then.
We will do great without you.

They did say they were going to mention all major parts of the expansion during the show. I’m pretty sure that “a new race” would definitely qualify.

Actually, they abandoned GW because they decided that upgrading its engine would be too much work. So we’re playing GW2 because ArenaNet did let a little hard work get in the way of progress.

I am not surprised by no new race, I was surprised by a lot of posts wanting one thou..
In developer man hours adding a new race to the game is probably equal to if not more work than a new class. Mainly in redoing all the armour sets in the game (there are a lot…) for the new race model and creating a new personal story for that race.
In player game time without doing the personal story, a player will have got over the new look/graphics within a hour or so (especially as every player in game will be of the new race) and perhaps a couple of more hours playing wardrobe with the new race and that’s it. Even playing through your entire personal story, you would be finished in a day or so.
Where a new character class gives 100’s of hours of gameplay.
Its a no brainer from Anets point of view.
