I am old (40+) years.
I know I am a n00b to Guild Wars 2, but I feel completely lost!

In WoW, I always managed to find someone who would help me for a while.
Even in Diablo, people would drop buy and drop yellow items for low level charactors.

I played the original Guild Wars with a few friends, and we helped each other.
But as they aren’t around, I need to make new friends online.

But no one seems to talk. I stop and do /say “something” (Hello, how you doing etc) and people just run off. I even got <throttled> yesterday on how many times I can do “/say” !!!

It’s really not helping me feel like playing more. The world is very immersive, feels very natural and the events make it feel like a real world. I want to play more.
I joined a Guild, one of the few times someone has spoken to me. Not a single Guild chat msg came through.

Can you guys make some suggestions on how I can get into groups and start having a collective experience? Solo grind really isn’t that interesting. Thanks for listening.

1. try another guild if its not the kind you were looking for.

2. The game world is just too fast to make aquaintances, a bit different for dungeons where you stick with people for a while.

/say is the wrong medium especially while questing, a lot of people are in omg I want to see and do everything mode.

/m for map chat will allow you to talk to people who want to converse with you across the entire map.

Join a different guild. Some are just full of quiet people, happens in every game. Also bear in mind that a lot of people (like me) turn off things like /s because random spam in /s bumps up guild chat and I’d rather not have to keep scrolling to read guild chat and whispers!

This is why adding solo personal story missions and removing group missions was a bad idea. Having to group to do missions always got people talking and it was a great way to meet new people without having to do something difficult like a dungeon, or without being forced to join a guild.

Thanks for the info guys. Some good suggestions, and your swift replies give me hope
Unofficial RP servers, ah didn’t know about that.
Or /M for map instead of /S

What consitutes a “Map”, the entire world I can zoom out to, or just Caledon Forest for example?

Also thanks for the Guild invite Aeon, very kind – bless you.
Can you just move servers? [Sorry, I know I am a total n00b asking stupid questions]

Use /map, people are very helpfull there and you can have a nice conversation till the godkitten gold-seller bots start to spam…

/map is just for the zone you’re currently in (Caledon Forest or Lions Arch etc.)

None of good stories starts with “I was drinking my milk when suddenly…”

First I would advise you to learn the different ways to say thngs ingame: I mean(as previous said) /map is a good way to find chat as it is for the entire zone(I think) and more people….
Second: I have never tried this but when you use @ after emote it enters the selected npc’s name….not sure if that work for players with /say…. I am saying that because most of the time I, for example, dont notice people around me….and when they do /say something, I will ignore it thinking its not meant for me etc….
Another way if @ doesnt work maybe try to whisper to them?(ether /w name or select them then right click their portrait and from there whisp)

….oh and its funny bcause dungeon’s ‘difficulty’ actually makes people talk in chat so they make strategis etc:)

Good to see another old head still playing. I think removing the traditional trinity system and letting everyone be so self sufficient kind of hurt the social part of the game. Unless you are looking to join a dungeon group you can play through the entire game from lvl 1-80 and see not a single person make a peep while you are out doing whatever. People always yap in map chat but when you are playing people will come and assist to kill quest mobs and aid you in doing a heart but once it`s done everyone usually disperses without a single word ever being said the whole time.

A group don`t need me to tank for them or they don`t need me to heal for them. They can do everything themselves so there is no incentive for interaction most of the time. Just seems like people will chip in to help only because they know they get part of the reward too.

But hey, if you aren`t too ahead in the game. Make a toon on Anvil Rock. I`m allready 80 and a little bored and wouldn`t mind having a buddy around my age to go through the game with again.

Did you make sure to “represent” the guild? Once you accept the invite, you have to go back to the guild tab, and click a button that says represent. Otherwise you don’t see guild chat and can’t speak in guild chat. This also puts the guild tag next to your character name that other people can see. A few friends and I didn’t notice that little mechanic for a bit either, it’s not exactly an obvious step in the process of joining a guild.

I imagine this is so you can be in and interact with different guilds for different characters. Since you have to click represent on each of your characters, each character can then represent different guilds. Like maybe you want your main in a hardcore pvp and dungeon group. Maybe your other characters you want in a more casual setting.

Hope this helped.

Find a guild that has a voice server. Nothing brings people together more than actually being able to talk, joke around and communicate in a group.

Unfortunately, some people only listen…and a lot of old timers just simply refuse to use voice. I use the term “old timers” in a gaming sense rather than and “age” sense.

Also…some guildwide chat updates would go a long way to fostering more closeness. Something that tells all of us when someone levels or clears a map…or even signs into guild? Just to be able to say gratz or hello…though this is something that Anet would need to address.

Join another guild for sure. It can make or break an mmo experience. I agree as well with joining Tarnished Coast. Excellent community.
