I’m a relatively new player (I have a 53 elementalist and a 24 necromancer) and I have some questions for experienced players

I would like to know if there’s a way to reset the hero points you’ve spent on your build since im kind of a new player and don’t know how to do a good build and for what.

I’m keeping most of my hero points I earn because I’m not sure what to do with them and which build I want to do, I’ve seen guides and everything, but still don’t know what I should do with them, thats why I come here just to ask for the opinion of experimented players.

Also, which crafting specializations would you recommend are best for the classes of characters I have (which are profitable, or can help me improve my equipment).

For your Hero points, spend them. Just getting to 80 will give you enough points to unlock everything for the base profession.

As for resetting them, there isn’t a way to do that.

Also, AP in this game generally refers to Achievement Points.

Edit: Professions are Elementalists, Necromancers, Mesmers, etc. what other games would call classes.

For crafting, Tailoring will be one thing to go for for armor, after that Artificer and Weaponsmithing will cover most of the weapon types those two professions use.

(darn it, ninja’d) By the time your character is lvl 80, you will have enough hero points to unlock everything, except your elite trait line. So, just level and seek out hero challenges to buy up the triats/skills that you currently don’t have open.

Imo play around with your traits and skills to figure out builds that work for you and (more importantly) you enjoy playing… for most/all of the content those’ll be the better builds to use. Once you’re more confident in your profession, then check out the profession sub-forums here for ideas on new or tweaked builds you may not have thought of.

Oh okay, thanks for pointing that out, I’ve already edited that so its not confusing for everyone.

About crafting, there’s not a limit on how many crafting specializations (idk how to call it) you can get? I sort of remember there was limit of two, right?

There’s no limit to the amount of crafting disciplines a character can have, but you can (default) have only 2 active at a time. To switch an inactive to an active, you’ll have to pay coin… 10 copper per level of the discipline you’re activating. You can spend gems to have more than 2 active at a time.

Another option that many do, I myself do as well. Have 4 characters, with 2 crafting disciplines, and you have the 8 base crafts (minus scribing covered) and you don’t have to worry about paying to switch out a craft, you just swap characters. Now that recipes are account bound, instead of character bound, this method works really well. Also, crafting provides experience for leveling your characters.

A long time ago there were NPCs that sold books called trait retainers or something along that line, that you purchased to reset your traits. Now, you can reset your unlocked traits anytime you wish for free, but the HPs you spend on the individual trait and skill lines cannot be reset. So, as you’re leveling, just be mindful of which lines you spend points on.

Last time I checked people were still attempting to sell those books on the TP, don’t buy them if they are still there as they are useless.

If you ever wander into wvw, the ability lines in there are set too, meaning once you spend your points, they cannot be reset. Though Anet has manually reset them for you atleast twice in the past, it not a guarantee.

To the best of my knowledge, short of when HOT was released, Anet has never fully reset a players chosen character trait points.

If you have multiple characters each doing 2 crafts, pick two crafts for a character that, between the two crafts, cover all of the ascended materials: wood, cloth, metal, and leather.

One of these combinations might be armorsmith and huntsman. There are more now because they added leather to the armorsmith recently.

I didn’t do this and I have to switch between characters to do my daily ascended crafting.

There is a base limit of 2 crafting skills per character, but there are gem store items that allow a character to have up to 4 now (buying the upgrade twice). As people have said, that’s not really necessary as having 4 characters with mutually exclusive craft skills will give you everything you need.

As for which ones you’ll want to start off with, probably Tailoring and Artificing. Tailoring makes light armor, which would help both your necro and your ele, and Artificing specializes in magic weapons. You could also consider weaponcrafting if you use bladed weapons more. Huntsman specializes in ranged weapons (plus warhorn and torch), but neither of your current classes use them, so I wouldn’t use that right now. Jeweler makes accessories, which all classes need, but uses completely different ingots than any other craft until it reaches mithril.

For Tailoring, you’ll need cloth and leather, which is mostly found from salvaging light and medium armor, although some can be found in various bags.
Artificing uses mostly wood and some metal. Artificers can also make potions that help against a certain type of enemy but only the top tier potions tend to sell really well.
All crafting professions need material components like scales, blood, and bone which are dropped from the various non-human mobs, although some are found in bags or rewarded for completing event chains on a map.

You might also want to consider crafting weapons and armor for a new character, as the initial gear is for very low level characters (level 5 or 10, I believe). Armorcrafting makes heavy armor, and Leatherworking makes medium armor.

Finally, if you’re looking for something more, the official wiki has nearly every recipe possible. Feel free to check there if you get stuck.

I’m pretty new too. I picked Tailoring and Jewelcrafting as a Mesmer.

Tailoring so far has been a waste. The materials are excrutiatingly difficult to get hold of, because A) they only drop from humanoid-mobs, B) the drops are partly levelled (so if you go to a low-level zone for low-level cloth, you’ll likely leave with current-level cloth instead), and C) because from what i can gather, the low-end cloth types are needed for late-game crafting — so the prices are hugely inflated. The stuff i can craft so far (about 175 skill) has always been worse than the stuff i get from quests.

Jewelcrafting though is fantastic to level with. Everything i can make is 10x better than what i can find, the materials are easy to come by and cheap on the market. Plus a lot of the stuff i can craft has good sell value (some cheap necklaces are about 60 silver on the market).

So definitely go for Jewelcrafting…maybe give Tailoring a miss though.

Just throwing this out there. Tailoring will be needed if you want to be able to craft Ascended light armor for your professions.

Outside of crafting it, there are alternatives to crafting the ascended, but it’s generally more expensive and time consuming.

Jewelcrafting, while useful for leveling, falls off once you hit level 80. The highest rarity that Jewelcrafters can make is exotic. With the current highest rarity for jewelry being ascended, and ascended jewelry being relatively easy to obtain.

Ah that sucks. Is there a reason for it (balance) or has Ascended Jewelcrafting just not been implemented yet?

I am unsure if there is a reason why, but Ascended Jewelcrafting just hasn’t been implemented. Maybe someday it will be, but until then, there are plenty of methods of obtaining ascended jewelry.

When ascended gear was first introduced, only accessories could be ascended and were only available in Fractals. Later, they were more added to laurels, then I believe ascended weapons (weaponcraft, huntsman, artificer) before the armor (armorsmith, leatherworking, tailor). I might have the timeline off a bit, but I believe that’s how it goes. That’s why jeweler and chef are the only two crafts currently without ascended gear.
