Not bad for a single player game...
I don’t know how high pop your server is in general, but there are usually lots of people in Queensdale doing the champion train, in Lion’s Arch the main town, and then doing the world bosses when they pop up.
Check http://us.gw2stuff.com/ for when these occur.
The reason why is because you’re on one server, in one location, that is not at the center of the game. If you go to Lion’s Arch, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of people.
Plus, you’re probably not playing at peak hours right now….and since this game is pretty expansive, people tend to be spread out when the’re exploring.
Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of people to chill with :P
Single player games are much more interactive, Try switching servers to a more populated one.

Game is pretty dead around this time (sucks for oceanic – prime time) but I wouldn’t say the whole thing is a ghost town. Try different times in the day, or different maps. There’s a reason the population list doesn’t say Low.
Guest over to Blackgate and enjoy being qued on every map most of the day. I stopped trying to farm events in Blackgate entirely because every time i do I hit ques on every Jormag, Shadow Behemoth, Lyssa, etc.
What’s the point in having a huge world to explore, only to join a zerg-train in Queensdale for 80 levels? Talk about soul-crushing.
And I dunno what “peak hours” are for this thing, but I’ve never had a problem seeing more than 1 player an hour at 10pm on a friday night in any other game. Ever.
And I’m not about to give ArenaNet any more cash just to get a playable game out of this. Server population says “high”, and that is a complete fabrication. No way I’m giving these guys $20 more just to find another dead server.
After making a ranger then realizing it was riddled with year-old unfixed bugs and rerolling another class, being forced to hold the mouse button down 95% of the time, constantly failing to find groups for the dynamic events and then asking another $20 to move to a server with actual people in it? No, I don’t think so.
I’m honestly considering just throwing in the towel at this point. They only reason I’m playing is because I can really see an enjoyable game through the muck, but every time I wipe away a piece, more slop falls on to my plate.

Did Godmoney type his reply out while you were typing. Take note of his reply.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

Guesting is free, allowing you to temporarily transfer to any other server in your region.
Guesting is free. You can guest to 2 other servers every 24 hours.
That means you can have 3 active servers at any given time. There are a handful of “dead” servers. There’s also a handful of overpopulated servers. It’s a mmo these things go along with the territory.
MMO’s are about guilds and people. No mmo is actually interesting for more than 6 months if you’re not playing with friends who you enjoy chatting with.
I played the game for the first 6 months because it’s a good game. I play it now because my guild is awesome.
Just a random guess. It may be you joined server with completely different time zone than yours.
Here is list of guilds across servers. http://gw2.guildex.org/
Location is shown so it may help you figure out where would be best for you to play if this was the case.
OP, you seem very knowledgable for someone who has only played the game for “3-4 hours on and off”.
Saying things like “What’s the point in having a huge world to explore, only to join a zerg-train in Queensdale for 80 levels?”
hmmm.
According to you, “I’m a new player (just bought the game over Christmas) and I’ve just run into the Ranger Pet Naming bug, that I’m sure everyone here is already aware of.”
You also say “FWIW, this is my second serious attempt at trying to enjoy this game, my first being a ranger which I pretty much dropped at level 24 after discovering the pet names bug, then subsequently reading the litany of ranger doom threads.”
So you can get one character to 24 and another to 27 in " 3-4 hours"? riiiiight.
And far more revealing, “heh… I hate to do this but, as a software developer myself (eww, see what you made me do!) I call BS on “can’t” fix it.”
ooookay.
Pardon me for calling “BS”.

3-4 hours on and off … so far this evening. I’ve been walking off and playing Rocksmith in between dying trying to solo some dynamic events. But feel free to poke through my post history and criticize a new player for finding a good game riddled with issues.
And yea, I might try guesting to another server. Because Anvil Rock is just depressing. Could be the time zone, I dunno… is there an indication of the time zone on the server list? Probably not :/

i see what you did there.
you might want to edit your original post to reflect that.
You won’t find many people on Blackgate doing random open world stuff either, and if you do, good luck getting their cooperation or response.
This isn’t a server issue, it’s an open world issue. People go where the rewards are.

Well, where do you live? This is an international game. There are servers at this time with decent player levels and, obviously, there are some that don’t. If you’re asking for help then give more details. If you just want to whinge then you’re on your own.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Few days ago, I ran from lvl 75 zone to LA during the FA prime time (Very High Population) and didn’t see a single person on any of the maps.

You can guest to other servers for free (I think it’s 2 servers per day?). That might help.
In general though, you won’t see many people in lots of the zones. The game is very gold/TP oriented — it’s really hard to farm for items because the RNG is tweaked so that loot drops are generally really poor — so everyone just does the activity that nets the most gold-per-hour: champ farming or dungeons. And that means everyone is aggregated to just a few zones (Queensdale, Frostgorge Sound, for example).
As for bugs: every profession that I can think of has bugs that have been in-game for over a year. The pace of bug fixing in GW2 is glacial.
I tell u where. They are all in LA doing nothing. That waits for you too when u hit 80 since this game is designed to keep you out of world map with existence of “main town” Lions Arch
I’m on a very high pop server and LA has been dead quiet all day.
Remember guys, server pop “very high” means “very high number of dead accounts”
