Very annoyed, honestly. @Anet

Everything about this would be fine! I don’t mind having some skills gated by getting other skills in their category, I don’t mind spending hero points because of how abundant they are, I don’t mind losing out on a lot of traits or things moved to a line they don’t particularly belong in—

What I DO mind is Anet using your hero points to default level up some training specs. (It doesn’t matter if they’re based on what you had equipped! A lot of things, especially traits, have changed and you should be able to choose what you want) Yes, yes, I know, Hero Points are easy to get, you should be able to unlock everyfin you want at 80, etc.

I don’t care.

This was fine for my 80; she had more than enough points to get every line trained completely, as is the case for many people.

The point is two things. A) They took away the ability to get a feel for this new system. Logging on to some things filled out and some things 0 with half of my original skills and new trait lines in place was very… disorienting.

B) Non-80 characters are really kittened over as is, defaulted into training whatever Anet thought they should and really, really messing up play pre-80— which, wow, does matter more than you’d think. (I think people tend to forget that not everyone power levels to 80 and there’s no reason they should be shafted for taking their time. They have as much right to choose what lines and skill they want as anyone else.)

There’s 0 reasons any points should have been spent on anything without the player doing it themselves. 0. You can make any claim you want that it’s an easy fix by waiting to 80 or just unlocking everything at 80, but that does not change the main fact that Anet had no right to fill out whatever training lines they felt like for your character— or any training lines at all, whether it was pre-equipped or not!

Thanks for reading, please don’t do this in the future/or offer some kind of training reset.

Yes, this must have been mind boggling to many. Hence all of the threads about lost skill points etc.

Seriously, if you are 80, you have nothing to complain about (except gold spent to unlock the now free traits).

If sub 80, no idea. Don’t have any serious one. Just a key runner.

There was a ridiculous amount of people engaging in histrionics and making posts before the patch accusing Anet of unfairly making people rebuy all their skills.

I kind of get the feeling this system was a misguided attempt to placate those people, so if I’m right you can thank them for this.

they chose the worst option (because it required the least work/ gave players the least choice…that’s the new motto….remove choices)…..but meh…its kinda nitpicking. all my 80’s had tons of HP’s left over (i think the lowest had 120-ish left)….and most people will want everything for at least one alt of each class for experimenting.

Because it also affects the least amount of people for the least amount of time. New characters won’t have this problem. 80s won’t have htis problem. Characters under level 11 won’t have this problem either.

It’s not really that big a deal, but yes, it is inconvenient. Anet should have definitely spent lots more time to deal with a problem that would work itself out fairly quickly anyway.

Actually, a reset of everyone’s skills and traits to nothing should have been simpler than a system to detect an existing build, allocate Hero Points and choose traits.

I have no idea how long it’s going to take me to earn back the 60 Hero points they shoved into a line I have no desire to level with in the new system because in the old system I’d slotted the only trait I’d unlocked. I enjoy leveling, but part of that is leveling with choices I’ve made, not choices made by an automated system based on choices I made because of the limitations of the prior system. I was looking forward to getting back on that character, now I’m likely to delete and not bother playing.

I’m aware that not-yet-createds and 80’s with a large complement of Hero points are unaffected, but for someone for whom build matters on a leveling character, giving me choice and then taking it away before I even see it is beyond inconvenient. It’s infuriating and unnecessary. I’d prefer that ANet stop treating its players like morons who cannot figure out anything on their own.

If they were going to shove their automated choices down our throats, they should have told us when they first announced the system, “Hey, we’re going to make choices on spending Hero Points for you based on which trait lines you’ve put points in.” Then I might have looked at my L36 and put my two whole trait points (2014 system) into a line I might actually like to have maxed. But no, that would be communicating and that kitten is not allowed.

Defend ANet’s high-handedness in this matter if you want. I’d prefer, though, that you try to walk a mile in my Chain Boots before you do.

The entire build and trait/skill system is no rocketscience. Takes maybe 5 minutes to figure out without tutorials.

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying. I have multiple 80s. Anet tried to approximate the build we had, somehow, and unlocked those specific traits. As far as I know, they only spent the points for the traits they unlocked. I don’t believe anyone lost any points. I didn’t seem to have lost points. It just looks like you have.

I’ve been on every character and I’ve unlocked every skill and trait line and I have a lot of characters.

What it seems like Anet did is refund all the skill points you would have gotten from leveling and the skill points you got, which is to say the new 398 points for leveling which is enough to unlock ALL traits and ALL skills.

They wrote automated software which tried to approximate your build, so some traits and skills came unlocked and were paid for from the poll of hero points you had after the conversion. I don’t believe you’re buying those skills again, or at least, you’re not paying for them twice.

You’re simply having to unlock them again with refunded points. That’s how I see it. Keep in mind I’ve done it on 27 characters and all of them were able to unlock all the skills and traits, without hero points left over.

I’m enjoying the new system. It’s actually much easier than the old system and all my 80th level characters have everything unlocked with hero points to spare.

As to the specific case: the character is not level 80; rather L36. I’d earned the 60 Hero Points Anet used to unlock a full Specialization line, plus enough for one full skill line and partial unlock of a second skill line. There were 8 Hero Points unspent. So. somewhere between 100 and 120, I’m guessing. Those 60 points represent about half of the total points earned so far.

To take advantage of the one Specialization line I’m allowed to equip at that level, I will need to gain another 52 Hero Points. I have no desire to earn those points by leveling using the Spec line I don’t want. To me, this is the equivalent of ANet changing the character from a Norn Warrior to a Charr Mesmer. It may be viable, it’s just not the character I envisioned. Thus, I will be deleting the character, and the momentum I’d been building to jump back into play has bled out. It’s not a huge deal, but it is disappointing.

Since I posted the response you quoted, I’ve read a red post about this issue. Apparently, I’m an “edge case” and an “impacted expert user” and need to take the bullet. I can understand the reasoning. It’s just that it feels like I’m the one taking an ANet bullet for the team an awful lot. That’s all. I’ve just gotten sick of it.

I really wish they had told us a week ago they were going to arbitrarily assign our HP based on what we had equipped. I might have been able to save this character.

I wish there was a way to reset points. As one with many toons I do rich ore node farming quite a bit, which involves some running. I think I have the right signets unlocked on most of my characters, but for the ones that don’t it’s…irritating. It’s even worse when I see what’s actually unlocked on them.

+1 to a refund system.

I don’t think you could have saved the character. The more I hear, the more I realize it had nothing to do with what you had equipped or traited or your utilities unless perhaps you were high enough level to have two trait lines unlocked. Anet decided X class gets X trait line(s) and tried to pass the blame down to players by saying “Oh we tried to match your existing builds”. They did not. They had a set line they planned to stick on each of the classes, your actual traits and abilities didn’t matter.

I’m inclined to believe this, at least in part. My L21 Ele obviously had not yet unlocked any trait points under the 2014 system, and thus has none in any of the lines. So what did I find? They committed 60 of my 80-100 Hero Points to full unlock of Earth Magic. This is on a character wearing glass gear, with no traits whatsoever. I can see it as a “We need to hold the hands of those who don’t know or don’t want to do builds, so we’ll give them survival traits.” but I cannot see how that build was in any way connected to a choice I made.

Oh, well, two low levels deleted. It’s too bad I didn’t really need the character slots, either.

I am beginning to think (after logging on all my characters) that it was one set for 80’s, and another set for pre-80s.

For example my 2 80 engies had the trait lines Explosives, Firearms and Tools completely unlocked, whereas all my pre-80 engies only had Inventions unlocked.

The skills that they all had unlocked seemed to be based on the skills they had equipped, but I’m not entirely sure.

While I agree that the traits shouldn’t have been decided for us, deleting characters is going a bit overboard. It’s really not that hard to level, even with that earth-specced elementalist, especially if you’ve played the game for a while. And yes, I have both 80s and lowbies, and some of my lowbies got stuck with trait lines I didn’t really want. Good thing that getting hero points to unlock what I do want ALSO gives exp., thus killing two birds with one stone.

I personally think Hero Challenges should give more Hero Points depending on the type of challenge. If it’s fighting a vet and two mobs, it should give like… 3? 4? If you’re just communing, one is fine.

But only getting one hero point per challenge is a little irksome.

Then what would we spend them on? At the moment I have about ~202 points on my 80 mesmer that has world completion, and has already unlocked every trait and skill. After elite specs come out I’m wondering if there will be a change to how we obtain/spend them.

Looking at it now it’s kind of odd. Of my world completion 80’s, my thief has 199 unspent points (after unlocking every skill and trait), my mesmer has 202 and my necro has 212.

It just feels like a gut punch to be honest and a handicap to be 60 points behind and not able to enjoy your character until they are nearly 80th level. I’ve played my sadly Earth specced ele and she doesn’t feel right compared to my 80th level who has all her traits fixed in her favor. Ele is the only one I’m really kittened about tbh, the other ‘set’ traits can be dealt with, but that ele.. her whole set up and attunement screamed “AIR”, I get Earth, and get it blamed on me and a “lol deal with it” from the Devs.

Yeah. no. If you are going to kitten players, you could give them a heads up instead of the “we tried to match your build and abilities” (I have yet to find a level 20-30 ele who was not auto specced to Earth. Every. Last. One. You cannot seriously tell me they all had Earth traits) and an explanation of why those traits were picked. They snuck this in while everyone was flailing and foaming about HoT.

This also seems to be only true for those under level 55. My level 56 engi doesn’t have Inventions (surprise), he has the two trait lines he had points in pre-patch. My level 30 engi though has Inventions despite never having a trait point there.

It just feels icky and adds grinding and a wait period that shouldn’t be there. I’d really love to hear the reasoning behind these ‘default’ trait lines.

Screw the Hero Points. Reaching level 80 is TOO easy. What really sucks is that some characters have changed so much that their current gear is no longer appropriate. For instance, I spent a lot of time finishing ascended gear for my Guardian. Now, having lost 200 points of armor, I’d have chosen different armor to reach that all-important 2800-3000 armor mark. Result? Guardian gets shelved… and a small list of reasons to keep playing shrinks further yet.

It really does make very little sense that they decided to auto-spend Hp for toons instead of just resetting builds and letting players do it to learn the new system.

I also think you should get fewer HP from leveling and more from skill challenges.
