Now that you can duel, who is?
This new system is horrible, we need an effing circle with a waypoint in the OPEN world, or possibly a zone – In fact, do an open world ring with instanced duel arenas and a spectator mode, not a flying eye, but actual stands where an invisible wall stops you from running in. Give 2v2, 3v3v, 4v4, and so on options. No que, no massive spvp field that is much bigger than a duel arena needs to be, just plain, everyday, no question about it, crystal clear, as blunt as an atom BOMB, unquestionable, sons of *****es, freak, freaking, mother freaking, DUEL CIRCLE WITH BASIC CIRCLE RULES!
I would love to be able to duel, but my desire to duel is not so strong that i am willing to follow your 5 step plan.
I would prefer:

>challenge to duel
>oppenent declines and i alt-tab to gw2lfg for another cof run

No you don’t. No, really, you don’t. You think you do, but you actually don’t.
You have the tools in place, right now, to organize duels, to have dueling tournaments, to spectate duels, etc. Yes, it’s not a gladiatorial arena, but the fact is it doesn’t have to be. I’m willing to bet, with the right people running things it could be far superior to a generic ring in the world. You could have a cross-server guild where on a certain night everyone guests to the same server, hops into the Mists and has an absolute blast.
If you wanted to.

Organize duels? Dueling tournaments? Okay, I’m gonna stop you right there, Duels should be something really simple, as simple as walking up to someone and challenging him, or go to a pre-set arena where you can step in and fight. When you have to start organizing something so simple, that’s already going WAY too far. It’s much more contrived, and needlessly so, than it has to be. You’re simply buying this nonsense without giving it a second thought. Stop trying to complicate something so freaking simple.
And what’s wrong with circles? In fact, arenas ARE circle formed, and the inability to set up a circle with some basic rules is a huge fail when coming from a company named ARENANet.

The simple fact that what you want doesn’t and won’t exist complicates your simplicity, does it not?
Fact. You cannot and will not be able to walk up to someone in the cooperative PvE world and challenge them to a duel. (Think about game design around the cooperative part and it makes perfect sense.)
Fact. You have a means to get your dueling if you choose to do it. You can create or join a fight club. You can duel, and you can do so with like-minded duelists without ever having to worry about being declined. You could even be, publicly, known as one of the best instead of some random annoyance that keeps challenging me while I’m trying to do something else.
Can you imagine how annoying getting a duel pop up would be if you were in the midst of an event or the like?
The problem is people want two things that ANet just flat out stated they are never going to do. And I believe ANet is hesitant to expand on dueling because of the backlash when these unreasonable expectations are not met.
1. Stat advantage – Most players I’ve seen that are so adamant about dueling insist PvE or at least WvW scaling, and ANet has already stated that will never happen. If dueling is implemented, it will be with PvP scaling. An even playing field or nothing at all, and a lot of players don’t want that, they want to abuse the system (and their fellow players) as they do in every other game.
2. Open world – While they have stated they want dueling, devs have expressed the same concerns about how immersion breaking it can be when fights can just break out anywhere in the world for no reason. This is probably not going to happen, it will most likely have to somehow be instanced or dueling players will be ‘culled’ off of anyone else’s screen.

Anyone taking advantage of the tools available now to duel with your friends, maybe have tournaments and the like? Just curious.
Oh, for those that don’t know what I mean, it’s actually fairly simple if there’s a group of you that wish to duel each other. At least, in concept, you all can do the work yourself. Allow me to elaborate.
1. Find a group of like-minded duelists.
2. Form a guild together. Give it a witty name, mayby tag it [DUEL], or call it Fight Club [HUSH] or something.
3. Organize Fight Nights.
4. Have everyone, based on the number of people, chip in gold to buy gems to buy a personal sPvP server.
5. Split up into teams, with the intent of being on the opposite team of the person you’re going to duel. Enter the arena, find your opponent, have the duel.If you’re organized on TS, you can even swap to multiple opponents as fights are won/lost. Keep a score board, fraps or livestream it, just have fun. You can even donate more than the cost of the server for prize money.
Yes, it’s not open world challenging… that’s not going to happen in a cooperative PvE environment, and it shouldn’t. But you can duel. All you have to do is organize it.
if you think this is acceptable for duels then i bet you also think GvG and LFG are both where they need to be. I mean, we have viable work-arounds, why even add these things if people can do it already?

No, it makes me think the dev responsible for this needs help dressing himself.
Cooperation should be voluntary, not forced, like everything else. It’s always best to try and cater to everyone.
Again, there is no reason to make it that complicated. Xbox One managed to mess up something as simple as sitting down with a friend on the couch and playing some games. In similar fashion, ANet botches a very simple and old concept that is standard in almost every game. People didn’t but it then, shouldn’t buy it now.
Which is exactly why every game with dueles has an option to auto-deny so that you won’t even have to see the pop-up. If you can’t turn on a simple function, who’s fault is it but yours?

I think it could be more than acceptable. As for GvG, I’m not a fan of GvG on the WvW maps. I do think an sPvP “open field” style map would be a viable solution for that personally, with a means for guilds from cross-servers to join together and have exclusive access. No timer, no score, no “rules” or points of capture, just a big open field and a tall, scantily clad Norn woman with a large flag that she waves to begin the battle.

Yeah but you can already do GvG in game so why change anything? You may have to organize some people yourself, and play on a map you don’t personally prefer, so it’s fine right?
cuz that’s what your saying about dueling :P
I mean, if you’re just trying to show people that want to duel, but don’t know how, that they actually can duel, then that’s fine.
but if your trying to advocate that no changes regarding dueling are needed, because of the tools currently available, then i think you’re nuts.
I would love to be able to duel, but my desire to duel is not so strong that i am willing to follow your 5 step plan.
I would prefer:

>challenge to duel
>oppenent declines and i alt-tab to gw2lfg for another cof run
I would object to this system simply because it could be used to annoy others with unwanted duel requests.
However, a “Looking For Duels” flag would remedy this (you can only request duels with other flagged players).
Edit: As mentioned in a post above, a matter of turning on a simple function. But in this case, the burden is on the person that desires a particular event, not someone who may not or does not wish it.

The chat box and map chat could easily be used to annoy others, yet we’ve all managed to live with the risk, despite the occasionally map chat trolls.
I think you could live with some unwanted duel requests. And i would like to imagine they would have /ignore or something to prevent this.

I hate this in other games and I would hate it here. Nothing worse then some L33T following you around spamming a duel challenge at you and if you refuse they start whispering you and calling you “chicken”. If you want to duel go to an area designated for dueling. I promise I will not go there!

I’m sorry for that one time in WoW someone duel spammed you. That must’ve been a traumatic experience. You’re a hero just for getting out of bed in the morning.
That being said, considering there is no information about dueling in this game, it’s just as safe to assume that they would add safeguards to prevent your jimmies from getting rustled (aka auto-block requests, no dueling in towns, etc).
This may have come off as rude, but i have had a lot of experience with MMOs and the amount of duel spam you encounter is not as frequent as these forums would lead you to believe. In fact, it really doesn’t happen outside of low-levels zones, where people that just bought the game and have no real intention of playing it find amusement in harassing people.
For what it’s worth, in my opinion, i don’t believe the horrendous act of duel spamming is so severe that it warrants not-including duels at all. I mean, the potential is already there for people to spam /map chat but we live with the risks everyday, and when people do troll it, we pick ourselves up by our bootstraps and carry on with our lives.

Somewhere in a cold dark corner the point weeps softly, realizing it has been missed.
Here’s the simplest take on it. Why add a potential means of griefing where none exists or is needed?

It was extremely rude but it fits in with the same mentality of those that would spam “duel” at you in the game, following you around and constantly challenge you. It is the same rudeness that I have seen not only in WoW but in more MMOs then you may think as I have been playing online MMOs since the first 3 major ones were released. Asherons’ Call, Everquest and Ultima Online. Prior to that I was in script based online games via bbs systems and public dialports. So if you wish to compare experiences with MMOs and the subject at hand I will put my experience up against yours any day of the week.

i addressed the point to your post like 4 times already.
there is tons of potential for griefing in this game. If we based every addition to this game based on potential for griefing nothing would ever get added. Don’t let the worst of the worst dictate what us well-meaning players can and can’t have in game.

I guess my rude post was an unsubtle attempt at saying “if your biggest problem is duel spams then you got it going pretty well.”
I don’t think it’s the same mentality as duel spammers because it is not my objective to annoy you for my own kicks. I will agree that “duel spammers” is an issue, but i will also say that it is overblown and exaggerated, and in the big picture won’t ruin the game for you.
I know it’s hard to understand if you don’t want to duel, but adding duels would add significantly more to the game for me than duel spammers would take away from it.

I agree with your #1 completely. Dueling should always be same playing field, which is why I believe it should be confined to PvP only. I do think there needs to be an in-game dueling option however. Even with the option of challenging random people to a duel. However, that option should only be available when you are in the mists. If someone accepts, you are put into an instance with the other dueler. Party members could even be given the option to join in the instance as spectators.
Rules in the duel should also be different. First off, no downed state. Upon death, both players are immediately re-spawned into a staging area, where you can have the option to go again, or one of the spectators can take up the challenge. To begin the fight, in order to be fair, each dueler will be placed behind a gate, with say a 5 second timer at which the gate will open and the match begins. (think Elder Scrolls Oblivion)
Back to my main point, there should never be any open world dueling option. Have it in PvP setting or nothing.
King Arcturus X~80 Ranger | Suki Serra~80 Thief | Count Charon~80 Necro | Regulus Leo~80 Ele
HoD since launch
Let me give you a bit of a history lesson. Back in Asheron’s call there was no PvP/dueling in the regular worlds when the game launched. PvP was restricted to a separate server. The PvP’ers however decided that was not enough and cried loud enough so the developers put PvP into the regular world. Now to turn PvP or “RED” you had to jump through a couple of hoops and again to turn the “RED” off. The reds decided it was fun to challenge you to “go red” and would take turns spamming you. Block one and the next one would take up the gauntlet. Block too many and they would follow you around the map trying to egg you into that duel.
Now some games were as bad, some worse, some better but currently in GW2 there is no option for that sort of griefing and I prefer to keep it that way. Sure they may put in a “No Duels Accepted” button, some games have that, but that just eggs on these people to find ways around it and still get the message to you that they think their “schwartz” is bigger then yours. They will do it by message, in the chat window, via the mail system, I have even seen people jumping up and down in front of me just to egg me into a duel. You may not be that type but sadly I have seen far more that are that type.
Thanks but no thanks.
