Q:

So I have a ranger alt, 1 of many alts, and used the pet dps build just to play around in wvwvw. One of my favorite things to do was to send my jaguar up on walls to kill other players, siege etc, OP indeed but a lot of fun and one of the very few fun ranger builds out there.

Now with this last patch I noticed my little jaguar dps machine cannot have fun anymore taking down players, siege in those hard to reach areas, so my question is why is it OK for Mesmer clone’s (x3) to be able to jump on wall tops killing siege and players and not OK for my little jaguar? Once you kill my jaguar he cannot play anymore, kill a cone and new one can be made instantly to continue the efforts of the recently deceased clone.

This is all out of curiosity, my jaguar is bored

No, I dont think its ok. Clones/Illusions should not be able to get to unreachable places.

To be fair, illusions and clones don’t last very long with their health, and they don’t do the same damage as a pet. I think the only decent use they can get up there comes from the shatter skills. Besides, mesmers have horrible aoe. Clones sorta make up for that.

The only way illusions or clones will spawn on top of a keep is if the player being attacked is stood right on the edge of the wall on top of the “lip”, that is because our attacks are based on line of sight and are spawned on a target. Clones spawned next to a Mesmer will not run up the side of a keep on top of walls like ranger pets were doing so.
We are at no more of an advantage than you are, if the enemy is standing on the wall behind the raised lip, our clones/illusions/attacks in general will not hit due to line of sight.

i will add that obstructed target make impossible for us to spawn clones. when you see a clone over there is because we actually are hitting someting, we cannot chose the spawn locations…

clones these days…

@OP: You are seriously comparing ranger pets to clones and illusions?

Clones and illusions hit for a maximum of 15 damage at level 80. Versus structures they do 0 most oftenly.

If you are refering to phantasms then those are equal to your ranged attacks and follow the same rules, ecxept that they stay in world until killed and repeat their attack every 8 second (or close to that, depending on the individual phantasms attack cooldown).

I main a Ranger and I find this thread largely ridiculous. Comparing a permanent “summon” to a temporary summon with different and limited mechanics isn’t very viable.

The man who can wield the power of this sword can summon to him an army
more deadly than any that walks this earth. Put aside the Ranger.

I feel like people are mixing overpowered together with unintentional. The only way “Guard” could be overpowered, is if the pet is overpowered. Just because it wasn’t the intention of “Guard” to get the pet on top of walls, it doesn’t mean that it automatically was overpowered. “Guard” gives the pet a bit of stealth, and some protection, but that doesn’t make the pet overpowered. Killing one player on top of a wall, before the pet gets spotted and killed, is not overpowered.

While the Ranger is shooting someone on top of a wall, and the pet isn’t dealing damage, that is underpowered. The fact that the Ranger had to use a utility, with a 30 second recharge, just to be abel to deal full damage, is underpowered. The pet dies to just about any AoE damage, which makes the Ranger underpowered.

There was nothing powerful about “Guard”, at all. It was a balanced ability, that allowed the Ranger to use his pet in situations where he otherwise could not.

I’ll give you a clue….. Illusions – kinda like asking why ghosts can walk through walls but your pet can’t. Last time I checked Ranger pets were living breathing beasties that tend to get stuck trying to do the ghost walk thing…. either that or they tend to suffer constant nose bleeds

Mesmers work on LoS to spawn an Illusion and even then there are limitations.
For your pet to get to that same mob the have to jump up and over a ver high vertical surface (a fort wall…) which isn’t to realistic imo.. now if you said they left the door open and the stairs/ramps unguarded I could get behind on this

Not true. My clone does around 1k-1.2k damage to cannons and other structures.

Are you actually kitten ?? Mesmers as of about 2 months ago can no longer spawn clones at enemies on top of walls and towers etc because they need perfect line of sight which is virtually unobtainable from such positions.

If you’re arguing realism there are flying pets… Why wouldn’t an eagle be able to attack somebody on a wall?
