Obi Shards?
Balthazar is closed quite a bit, but it’s not impossible to find it open (at least speaking for Tarnished Coast). If it’s closed though, your best best is to go out to help out with the event chain that opens it.
Just go here http://us.gw2stuff.com/en/events/us during prime time and look for the server that has a blue dot under Balthazar, then guest to that server and buy, takes 5 min tops. One tip though, be sure to port back to Lions Arch or something before you switch back to your server…otherwise your going to have a bad time when you log back in….

gw2bear.com
Also shows open temples on servers as well as COE and COF.
laokoko.7403 – Aaaah yes, that will be quite helpful.
Dahkeus.8243 – I did go down to “help out” 5 times over the weekend… crickets.
UrMom.4205 & Mad Rasputin.7809 – Looks like similar to the gw2state site. All should be helpful thx.
Conclusion so far: So it looks like guesting is the most viable option, I guess.
Follow up:
Using gw2state I checked the Temple of Balthazar 3 times yesterday and once this morning, the result… each time, closed on Every server. Oh so sad.
I kept checking gw2state and as soon as I saw a server with an open temple, I guested there to get my shards. It might take a few days, but it will be open somewhere sometime.
I opened 3 sets of 10 boxes and each time got two shards, so 3% seems a little pessimistic.
Noob questions time, it’s to do with guesting.
a) how on earth do you do it
b) you talk about finding a server and guesting on it. Do I have to know someone on that server or can I just ‘go to it?’

Select “World Transfer” from bottom left of the character selection screen. Select the realm you want to guest to and click “guest”.
Log into the game and you will log into the guesting server.
Ah thank you! I always assumed it was just if I had a friend on another server and i’d be their ‘guest’.
Balth is so bugged usually, it is not done as often as the other temples.
But it does get done. Keep checking, it may take a few days. Check at a different time of day also, that may help.
And the drop rate from the orion jewelry boxes is horrible. Never rely on them for obsidian shards.
Lost Orrian Jewelry Boxes for sure, no idea where you got that 3% number but it’s not remotely true. after spending 2 million karma on boxes two weeks ago I ended up with 2 full stacks of obsidian, I would place their drop rate around 15-20%

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Lost_Orrian_Jewelry_Box/Drop_rate
According to the Lost Orrian Jewelry Box/Drop rate page it states 3.3%.
Just going with the data they give me.
the methodology used on that page isn’t worth anything, it doesn’t even count multiples and their math is completely wrong for evaluating drop rates.
3.3% isn’t the drop rate, it’s the distribution based on total objects received(as opposed to total boxes opened).
The only way that the drop rate could be derived from it is if every opened box gave one and ONLY one item, which it doesn’t.

Stormbluff Isle clears temples every Saturday, either its own or on another server. If you don’t find an open temple till then, you can always count on that.
It’s usually open on either TC or JQ almost every night.
