It’s fine the way it is. At least you don’t have to do map completion in WvW anymore. I remember waiting weeks for one Vista because my server couldn’t take a keep. Besides if you want a legendary you should have at least a minimal understanding of the game as a whole(even though it excludes pvp)

Has nothing to do with having an understanding of the game. Its about grinding gamemodes only a niche of the population plays activly to begin with. Having it sold by a merchant for a wvw only currency as it used to I had no issue with. But having to run around in a blob with 40 other people for 6 hours is just mind-numbing.

… and yes I did map completion when wvw was included and I’m greatful they changed that. However, I think they should add the Gift of Battle into Pvp aswell as Wvw.

Either you’re just not reading what I’m writing or you’re to ignorant to keep it on topic. Either way, I’m not proposing moving the Gift of Battle AWAY from Wvw. I’m asking for an ALTERNATE way of recieving it INSIDE Wvw.
Would it be via a collection or as a random drop from mobs, I have no idea. Just something other than running around in circles flipping Keeps.

I am willing to write this again and again: The Gift of Exploration takes a significantly longer time to obtain than the Gift of Battle. (both required in the Gift of Mastery).
Getting all the stacks of T6 fine materials takes a lot of time working/grinding for the money to buy them (or resources to craft them). The weapon specific Gifts can use up an obscene amount of gold (e.g. Gift of Bifrost).

Nothing you have to do to get a Gift of Battle at the current state of the game covers a fraction of what you have to do for another “Gift of …”

I would even argue, that it might be easier to get a full reward track in 5.5 hours now (full tick, booster = 314 points every 5 min), than getting 250 Badges of Honor in the same time.

Aside from this, this game started with you having to do WvW for world complete. I’m not sure why that’s ignored.

If you wanted a gift of battle, you had to run around and complete WvW maps. It wasn’t easy. Sometimes it wasn’t fun, and a lot of people hated it. This isn’t worse than that. This is actually easier.

Because at least this way you don’t have to wait for one tower that isn’t your color that your guys never cap to turn to your color so you could get it.

But yes, right, it’s always been play your way.

People need to look at the context that quote was given in, rather than using it for everything every time they want to try to make a point.

I would support this. However, I doubt ANet will make it happen (and, despite my preferences, I’m okay with that).

For the last year or more, ANet has been encouraging active gameplay by gating rewards behind it, in part due to player requests that folks not be able to “leech” in the open world. Some of the mechanics have worked well (wvw reward tracks) and some less so (the original HoT participation timers).

The original requirements for legendary gifts required active WvW participation of some sort, to get badges and to get exploration. Eventually, people started accumulating badges without playing WvW (via AP reward chests) and ANet removed wvw from world map completion (at the request of PvErs). Making it part of a wvw reward track returns WvW to a necessary component for creating one’s own legendary.

tl;dr It’s unlikely to change. ANet seems to want to reward players for active participation. They want to retain WvW as an important aspect of working on a legendary.

Here’s a “what if” for critics of the current system. What would seem a reasonable way, to you, for obtaining the GoB and still meet ANet’s interests? For the sake of argument, let’s suppose that ANet’s motivations are strictly about two things:

  • Legendary weapons should require some type of WvW participation.
  • It should be easier to obtain rewards through active rather than passive gameplay.

WvW is broken for all but a few servers with populations for it. Even with the new system I find myself on empty maps running around trying to maintain any small level of participation and avoiding getting zerg stomped. I really dread making another legendary if I have to spend 6 hours like this.

Badges of honor were obtained through WvW already for most of us, anets switch over basically said that our previous participation in WvW is worth less than our current participation.

That’s why I suggested PvP reward track as they do want players to try PvP. And have it be an alternate so that players can do PvP for one legendary and then WvW for the next.

I don’t personally have a problem with the WvW reward track being how the GoB is obtained, but adding in a PvP option would add in variety and that can help for players looking to make multiple legendary weapons.

That sounds like a really strange suggestion considering I’m not trying to move the Gift of Battle away from Wvw. I’d rather have multiple ways of obtaining it inside Wvw.
I don’t know, something along the lines of a collection containing. "Capture and hold Stonemist Castle for 30 minutes.
Hold all three Keeps at once.
Reach the highest participation tick.
Capture 10 Camps.
Capture 5 Towers.
Capture 3 Keeps.
Capture Stonemist Castle.

Barring “return the vendor that was fine for 3 1/2 years”?

Make WvW reward tracks progress on direct WXP gain, like the PVP version does with rank points. That actually would promote active play a lot more than “do something, stand around waiting, do something, stand around waiting, etc” like people do now.

GW2 is about Tyria and the stories of the people who LIVE in Tyria. The Mists are about dead people. It makes FAR more sense for the game to be centered in the land of the living and the events that are happening there. Fighting over the land of the dead or kitten amongst individuals should have nothing at all to do with being a LEGEND.

You also get passive rewards, which were even more common before. Many PvErs have tons of badges of honor, from Achievement reward chests — those are passive rewards, since they didn’t require active WvW participation.

in part due to player requests that folks not be able to “leech” in the open world.

What do you mean by “leech”? Leech from whom?

Most events allow you to gain the reward if you kill a few foes at the right time. In the Silverwastes, people have long complained that some folks earn the full rewards without contributing to the fight for more than the minimum amount of time. ANet has been experimenting with mechanics to make that harder to do, which is how we ended up with participation timers in HoT maps. (Some people welcomed them, at first, until we realized how clunky and extreme they were.)

  • Legendary weapons should require some type of WvW participation.

Why?

Keeping in mind that I’m speculating about ANet’s motivation (since they haven’t actually said), their original intent for Legendary weapons seemed to be something that required some participation in more than just PvE. There’s pretty much no reason to remove all vendors for the Gift of Battle unless the idea was to make WvW participation a requirement.

  • It should be easier to obtain rewards through active rather than passive gameplay.

Playing any mode isn’t “passive”. “Passive” = watching TV.

Playing isn’t passive, of course. But rewards can be obtained passively, or at least, with less active participation by the player. There are all sorts of examples, which were originally a strength of the game. Over time, people have tended to take advantage of some of the mechanics to let others do most of the work, while they gain all the rewards.

You can nitpick the way I’ve phrased my question, if you want. It would be nice if you responded to the idea:

  • ANet has their own goals for how legendary weapons should be obtained.
  • The change to acquiring the Gift of Battle supports those goals.
  • For those who don’t like it the current mechanic, how would you design a system that gets ANet what they want, while making it less of a chore for non-WvWers?

The most effective way to get someone (ANet, in this case) to change their mind is to make sure you understand their point of view, and then try to address the things important to them.

In this case, we can offer them a new method of acquisition that supports what seems to be their goals (reward active participation and include some WvW participation as part of the legendary process). Alternatively, one can try to convince them to drop one or both of those goals.

I’d bet that it’s easier to offer them a different mechanic than to get them to reconsider making active WvW participation a component.

Ah, so YOU define “active gameplay” as WvW. Since you are the only person I’ve seen with that definition, I’m not sure it is very valuable as a term. Since no one else is going to understand what you mean by it.

There’s pretty much no reason to remove all vendors for the Gift of Battle unless the idea was to make WvW participation a requirement.

So “Legendary weapons should require some kind of WvW participation because that’s the way Anet originally created them”? They also originally had World Completion include WvW…

  • It should be easier to obtain rewards through active rather than passive gameplay.

Playing any mode isn’t “passive”. “Passive” = watching TV.

Playing isn’t passive, of course. But rewards can be obtained passively, or at least, with less active participation by the player. Over time, people have tended to take advantage of some of the mechanics to let others do most of the work, while they gain all the rewards.

I think your use of the word “passive” is a bit extreme. As you say, any form of playing isn’t passive. And “tagging” isn’t limited to PvE.

You can nitpick the way I’ve phrased my question, if you want. It would be nice if you responded to the idea:

  • ANet has their own goals for how legendary weapons should be obtained.

The most effective way to get someone (ANet, in this case) to change their mind is to make sure you understand their point of view, and then try to address the things important to them.

Requiring different modes of play in order to accomplish things in game = not allowing players to play GW2 as they like. WvW and PvP are niche game modes in the MMO world. This is why Anet has to “force” players into those modes. But forcing players into those modes doesn’t sit well with the players who are forced. And frankly, as I have read elsewhere, I don’t know why people who actually like those game modes would want people playing who are only there because they are forced.

As for offering a different mechanic, they are professional game designers and I am not. Likely anything I suggested as a mechanic would be a source of much hilarity in their office. I’m not saying that players can’t make suggestions, but “I want real / sexy armor” is not a game mechanic.

You can play how you like. You just can’t get the wvw stuff unless you do some wvw. Nobody is making you play wvw.
But wait you say.. legendaries require wvw components! So play without a legendary then…

I think the problem here is that in your instance:
I love wvw (not really but we’re pretending)
You are “forced” to do wvw.
You believe I will be mad you are forced to play alongside me.
You are wrong. If you are my enemy I enjoy killing you, if you are my ally I enjoy the assist capturing keeps.
Maybe you’ll even realise that wvw with a group is actually quite good fun!

Or you can just be mad at the game, I don’t really care. I just got on with it, got what I needed and am back enjoying PvE with my legendary.

I wouldn’t be mad if it was changed so you didn’t need a wvw component. I’m not going to sit around waiting for that change however.. ymmv.

All of my previous WvW time spent has become worthless and now they want me to spend more time in a broken gamemode and they’re trying to force it on me? This seems like a reasonable thing to be mad about. It would be like deleting your PvP Rank and then telling you that you need to get to level 80 PvP rank to get a legendary.

The change to acquiring the Gift of Battle supports those goals.
For those who don’t like it the current mechanic, how would you design a system that gets ANet what they want, while making it less of a chore for non-WvWers?

Well:
- I don’t argue the right for ANet to have their own goals regarding the legendary weapons. In the other hand I don’t want somebody to deny me the right to not agree with the ANet own goals. Because it may be possible that ANet goals to not match my idea of fun or entertaining. They own the game – they have the right to gave goals for the game. I bought the game – I have the right to want something fun and entertaining (with other words something I like). From this kind of conflicts regarding what I like and what ANet forces me to like you cannot have positive results – see the last quarter sales report. ANet should understand that even if the game belongs to ANet, the money belongs to the players. And if you are bold enough (I was close to write “stubborn”) to ignore the players goals, you should expect that the players will ignore you.
Conclusion: The change in obtaining GoB is ANet right. Being discontent with this is the players right. What will result from this conflict, (and other conflicts created by ANet) only the next quarterly sales report will show.
- “The change in acquiring GoB supports ANet goals”. As I said before this does not support a part of the players idea about fun and entertaining.
- The problem with the third question is that we don’t know what ANet wants. They never clearly states what they want. I started to doubt that even ANet knows what ANet wants. They stated once (few years ago) what they want from GW2 (play how you want / no preparation to have fun / no grind / no elements you hate form other MMO’s)- but it seems they forgot that Manifesto. And other statements are missing.
Still I think your question is a little bit missleading: Why should we (the players) be worried about what ANet wants? In a vendor – customer relation, a more natural atitude is that the vendor (ANet) to be worried about what the customer (the players) wants. And nobody asked before to change the former way of obtaining GoB.

I can understand that someone doesn’t like wvw. I’m not particularly fond of it either. I spend about 95% of my time in pve, and do wvw dailies only if the pve ones are too boring to live through. (I don’t do pvp, I’ve tried, not my thing)
Now unfortunately I also like legendaries. A lot. So since the change I’ve done the reward track for GoB 3 times, because if I want my new shinies I need those gifts.

But wvw is boring you say? I agree, but I made a new little cute asura, tomed him to 80, and decided that this time I wouldn’t get his elite in pve, I’d do it with the wvw proofs, just to see how that method works. (Turned out that it was easier than constantly begging for help with HoT HPs btw). I was in no hurry, but made sure the GoB track was active, and when I unlocked the last elite skill I also had 2 GoB.
So, just a tip on how to make it a little more interesting.

In due time, all will serve the asura.

OP prefers PvE?

1) Go to EOTM
2) Board the snooze-fest k-train
3) Eventually get your gift of battle

It’s basically PvE… sadly… that or PvDoor when the enemy is asleep. I still question how you can’t stand WvW. Big fights can take your mind off the actual lengthy wait of the reward track and you’ll be helping your server buddies out, too. Plus bagsssss!

Because not everybody is on a T1 or T2 server? When you spend week after week being outnumbered and getting zerg stomped you realize how entirely reliant on numbers WvW is. You also realize that zerg fights are 99% numbers and 1% placement.

I have to grind camps and dolyaks solo to keep up even partial participation and if a zerg spots me I am dead. Its a terrible gamemode that anet as refused to balance since day 1. In the early days of WvW it was pointed out that it was not balanced and anets response was to say that it wasn’t meant to be balanced. A lot of us took that for the cop out it most definitely was. Even so I continued to WvW for a few months. All of that WvW was worthless because anet has made the reward currency from then worthless with the badge change.

Then maybe it’s time to move servers or find a guild so you can make things easier for yourself? Afterwards, you can always transfer back.

If you are worried about participation I believe if you hit the max participation you can just wait it out somewhere; SMC for example and watch TV or something whilst it ticks away at 100% giving full participation. Lazy, yes, but it works.

You are right in a particular area – WvW has terrible balance, especially when it comes to population balance and numbers. It’s difficult to balance a game regarding coverage when it’s a global one played 24/7. Sometimes players need to shift around to help their own selves… it’s a shame it also leads to bandwagoning etc. Nothing is perfect, this is sad.

Not necesarilly. I have played plenty pvp both before and after the seasons. I just dont enjoy WvW. The whole concept of it. The big fights are exactly what I dont like. I would enjoy it greatly if people just roamed around engaging in small scale fights. Say 4v4’s 2v2s or even 5v5s. But these 20v20 staff guards stacking to avoid aoe. Yes, you heard me. Stacking to avoid aoe. Is as I phrased it earlier. Mind-numbing.

You’ve expressed your opinion that you don’t like the current situation. Great. I’ve attempted to offer a way to go about convincing ANet that there’s a better way.

I’m saying that ANet, for reasons with which you (and others) disagree, decided that they would prefer that people actually participate actively in WvW before being able to build a legendary, just as people need to actively participate in PvE’s map completion in order to make their own.

Rather than nitpicking my phrasing, how about you offer your own idea for how to go about convincing ANet to change things? Simply saying “we’re mad as hell and not going to take it anymore” might feel good, but on the rare occasion when it causes the Powers That Be to take action, we usually end up with something worse.

Ah, so YOU define “active gameplay” as WvW.

No. Read again; that’s not even close to what I’ve said.

So “Legendary weapons should require some kind of WvW participation because that’s the way Anet originally created them”? They also originally had World Completion include WvW…

No, again, not what I said.

I’m saying ANet wants legendary weapons to include some sort of WvW participation, because otherwise it wasn’t worth their time to add a new reward track just for the gift of battle; we already had a way to obtain it that wasn’t broken.

I wouldn’t have made the change (although I’m not against it either). I’m trying to understand their motivations.

I think your use of the word “passive” is a bit extreme. As you say, any form of playing isn’t passive. And “tagging” isn’t limited to PvE.

So what words would you use? You seem to be deliberately ignoring the concept:
ANet has been changing mechanics so that full rewards are harder to obtain without full participation, in part due to community demand.

I don’t think ANet is trying to force players into WvW. I think they are trying to establish legendary weapon creation as being something for more focused players, a niche group, not the vast majority.

Or more correctly, I think if ANet wanted to “force” folks into WvW, this is absolutely the least effective, most counterproductive way to go about it. Thus, it’s hard for me to imagine that it was ANet’s goal to use the GoB reward track primarily as a method for increasing WvW participation.

As for offering a different mechanic, they are professional game designers and I am not. Likely anything I suggested as a mechanic would be a source of much hilarity in their office. I’m not saying that players can’t make suggestions, but “I want real / sexy armor” is not a game mechanic.

You don’t have to design the mechanic. You just have to describe what you think would be fair and still meet ANet’s goals.
