Guild Wars 2

Which class would you recommend for someone who would like a character that can do well in PvE/WvW and tPvP.. all while using a staff as one of the primary weapons.

I have a small love affair with bifrost.. and I could use some advice!

I tried mesmer.. but I didn’t really like the staff abilities very much.. and then there’s Ele which doesn’t really do well in tPvP.. halp.

The only other two classes that can use staff are Necromancer and Guardian. I would say give them a try see which one you like. I will add I dont think you will find a class that can use staff that meets your desires. There is not a class I can think of balanced enough using staff.

Staffs a very…underpowered weapon. On ele its not bad. In fact it might reach the same dps as the scepter/dagger or dagger/dagger LH builds :

but i dont have an ele so i cant tell you if its actually good or not.

on mesmer i think its pretty much useless in pve. Guardian uses it sometimes but not enough to justify a bifrost IMO. Necromancer dagger/dagger is supposed to be better.

Anyways i think you should go with ele if you want to use staff and i dont really see why tpvp is a requirement because you can just make another character for tpvp. You cant use bifrost there anyways.

Edit: after reading the thread i posted the link to staff is a pretty great weapon on elementalists and is the best dps for eles. I definitely recomend you go with elementalist if you want bifrost because that way you will be able to use your weapon all the time (no swap) and will be useful.

my personal choice is warrior, but he does not uses a staff though haha.

I am sort of deliberating between Necro and Ele now :/ But I heard Necro condis are pretty MEH in PvE…

There are very good staff builds for this class.

But not for PvE really right? Since Beserker gear is king.. and I believe (generally) phantasm builds are best for PvE? The iWarlock isn’t very strong.. as far as I know.

there’s no legendary weapon in TPVP. So ur bifrost should go to to ele since u mentioned the only drawback for ele is in tpvp.

alternatively you can use guardian,useful in pve/wvw/tpvp

You can find ^there a solid list of mesmer builds with staff. Some for PvE.

I have 2 gs/staff Mesmers and I use both in pvE.

Don’t believe everything you hear.

I also have a staff Ele and it is ok, not as survivable as Mesmer and much more support oriented – Mesmer is much more fun and versatile imo.

I don’t like staff on my Necro but she is only lvl29 so I haven’t really played with her yet.

What sort of build do you use on your staff Mes? And have you done any fractals?

Personally, my fav mesmer weap is a staff. I’ve tried all others but don’t like any of them. Perhaps coz i’ve always used a staff since launch and got used to it. I use g/s as a 2nd weap but in a mob situation, i’ll always die with g/s while rarely when using a staff. I gave my mesmer the bifrost and not regretted it. It looks great on her, matches the mesmer colour tones of purples/mauves etc, plus it’s nice to see all ur clones using it as well; best value for money sort of speak hehe.

hehe no I do not do fractals but like TigerAshante, I like staff because I have become used to it and I like how it combines with GS.
To me the sum is more than the parts in the end.

I am very hard pressed to describe my playstyle on Mesmer, because it is so situational and I don’t think anymore why I do what I do.

I have never really read up on builds because I like to make my own to suit how I play and what I want to do with a character.

As for builds my first is a 0/0/20/20/30 build and she is virtually immortal but kills very slowly- she is condition based and I like her in WvWvW.
Because of condition cap in PvE she doesn’t do so great in big fights but works well solo.

My 2nd is a the complete opposite and is power/ crit based but since she is not 80, I haven’t finalized her.
Even though she has next to no defenses I find that she can still survive because of the way gs/staff works in combination.
Also in comparison she burns through mobs.

When I originally made her I specifically wanted to try the other weapon combo’s- they just don’t do it for me and I found myself continually missing a staff skill- so I just went with staff.

Staff tends to be a secondary weapon for all the classes that can use it, except ele. You’ll rarely see a necro with staff as their primary, but they’ll use it often enough to build up their DS or for healing marks. Due to the mechanics of no weapon swap, ele will most benefit from a Legendary staff imo.

Ele! I have a necro that I never use staff with, and an ele that I use staff or s/d equally. I’m leveling a mesmer but didn’t try staff on her yet, so no opinion there. The only thing I dislike about staff is that it feels slow compared to s/d. Anyhow, the fire #5 skill will look very sexy with the bifrost.

You should jump into the PvP training area with all 3 classes and try it out for a bit.
