The programming team is doing a little clean-up today. This probably won’t impact your account at all, but we wanted to post, anyway, for those few who may see the effects.
Some buy orders that were placed between launch and the end of October 2015 are going to be cancelled and the currency involved refunded to the player. Only orders that are below vendor value and therefore are impossible to complete will be impacted. Everyone involved will be refunded all “escrowed” currency in relation to these bids, and of course they are welcome to place a new order if desired. Currency from cancelled orders will appear in the trading post pickup as usual.
Well, this will be interesting.
Good. I’ll be happy to see this getting fixed finally.
Agreed, this should have been done back when tp min price change was done.
Nice, its a small thing but one that I know a lot of people have brought up over time when dealing with the TP. Thanks!
I always wondered how it was even possible to post a transaction that couldn’t be completed and how there was no automatic cleanup system to prevent that.
Now this is good news! TY

It used to be possible to place a bid of any amount for any item, and it was up to the seller to make sure they didn’t sell for below vendor value.
That was changed a while ago (October 2015 I assume), but all the old orders were left up. I assume Anet expected players to take them down when they couldn’t be completed. But I know I’ve been guilty of just leaving a bid if I’m in no hurry, or if I just don’t look at the history tab often.
It’s finally happening!
Just buy orders? And what about those impossible sale orders, like the mystic forge stones that were temporarily tradeable?
The change happened long before end of October of 2015; that’s only ~4 months ago. Not sure why they chose that cut-off date; maybe something to do with HoT’s launch. /shrug
Kind of better late than never I guess, it’s been a PITA forever.
Gaile,
If I recall, the reason this didn’t happen originally was concern about that amount of liquid currency re-entering the market, and the effect it might have.
Is this no longer a concern?

Maybe not, for a couple of possible reasons. Most of the ones being refunded are under vendor and are a few copper. With the amount of gold now in circulation it may not be enough to be significant. The other might be that since these are dating back to before it was made impossible to put in order below vendor, many of the people who are getting refunded gold may no longer be playing, so the gold will sit untouched and will only slowly trickle back in if these people resume playing later.
Yay!
Thanks for this.

Yea! That change happened in like 2013.

That’s what I was thinking.
A combination of many of the buy orders having been taken down by the player already, the low value of the ones remaining and the fact that many may be on inactive accounts probably means it’s less of an issue than if they’d been removed right away.
I wonder what the effect in the economy will be when all these amounts get returned to players?
Any ideas – tin foil hat time.

Like other say probably most people get money back from this do not play any more. Active player probably would not leave large amount of gold in buy order that can not happen for about 3 year now. So many of these old order probably belong to player that quit before Anet make change about minimum buy order. Maybe a few come back some day and get some gold back but since change was so long ago doubt many.
I have personally quite a bit of random gold tied up at stupid low levels – just didn’t bother cancelling orders (often as the tp was broken).

I doubt that if you couldnt be bothered to cancel those buy orders all these years, the amount of gold wont have any meaningful impact on the economy.
Those old buy orders were left untouched not for game economic reasons but for real oconomic reasons. Until now, they said that it just takes too much time and man hours to cancel all these, so they left them.
Can you clean up my block list while you’re at it and remove all permabanned accounts from it? I’d rather not have a million gold seller accounts just sitting in there.

You can do that by yourself. Just unblock everyone! I’m pretty sure it won’t take long after that and you will be whispered from a lot of new friends.
This is great news. Should clean up the Tp a bit and give better ideas of how much of certain items are actually on the TP.
I saw runes still being on TP for lower then the vendor prize. Why is that?
Glad they are finally getting around to this. Should have been done a long time ago, but I guess in this case it’s better late than never.

Same, was wondering where to report them. If you (ANET) want such things reported that is.
I don’t know why, but I have a feeling we are in for some economy bombshells.
Awesome. Way to go, programming team!
Ok really nice to hear this. Futhermore it would be really nice if you would have the same things with sale orders that were tradeable for a short time.
And could you please grey out the buttons when you want to place an order/sale under the vendors price so your not able to try to place it under the vendors price ? Its just a quality of life thing but shouldnt be a problem.
Update: The team is going to do another clean-up of invalid Trading Post buy orders. Most likely this will take place tomorrow, Thursday, March 24. Like last time, this clean-up will be unlikely to impact your account. However, if you had submitted a buy order for an item that no longer is available, your order will be cancelled and all currency involved in the buy order will be returned to you. You will be able to pick up that currency at any Black Lion Trading Company outlet after the cancellation and refund process is completed.
Thanks again to the people involved with this. Invalid trading post orders have long been a pet peeve of mine, so it’s great to have them cleared out!
Thanks for this. It may feel like a little thing, but this has definitely improved my QOL. Those old orders were so annoying when my bags were full of greens and such I just wanted to sell as fast as possible and get back to killing stuff.
The most recent clean-up is now complete!

Still tons of invalid (lower than merchant value) buy orders for T5 mats and minor sigils on the tp, so I hope this won’t be the last clean-up
You’ve only said buy orders in this thread, what about sell orders?
For example search for Potion of Dredge Slaying. It will automatically select the lowest available sell order (3c, there are thousands listed at that price) but the buy button is greyed out because the minimum price you’re allowed to trade it is 4c so then you have to manually select the one that matches the minimum price so that you can actually buy it which is kind of a hassle.

Sadly true.
Why is Anet finding sooooo hard to do a simple query looking for all items where bid price < vendor price (or whatever else determines the minimum)?
I don’t get to be honest
Other MMO’s in fact every game I can even think of has an Auction house that works with 24-48 hour system. You can’t create an auction in real life and post it up there forever there is no eternal ebay or even newspaper add that doesn’t need to be renewed. This type of thing is also held in games because it helps to stabilize the economy.
They removed all the items that were below market value but what about all the items that were posted when gold was abundant and raining from the sky. People don’t make the income they once did with dungeon nerfing and the current state of WvW so they can’t afford old world pricing. Yet they go into the TP and they see the market value of items from over 2 years ago. The market in this game is rigid and some items don’t change the simple act of adjusting the market must be terrible because everything in anchored to old TP prices. Heck the draining of liquid gold wouldn’t even be a problem if people had to renew their TP posts because the market would adjust more and more every-time an old auction needed to be renewed.
This has been on of my major gripes since launch but meh GW1 didn’t even have an auction system so I let it slide but seeing you all adjust merely the low end of the auction reminded me of the issues of the bloating. You all set Precursor crafting to TP prices of Pre weapons that were put up years prior and as a result the pre is more time consuming and costly the craft than the other three components of the legendary.
currently looking at Intricate Totems and pieces of ambrite in my “sell” tab. cannot sell to highest buyer due to buy orders being under the minimum price
It’s about time! lol
I never understood why orders that are impossible to buy are still on the TP.
Thank you. I hate those evil below vendor orders keeping me from selling something right away that I’m too lazy to NPC. =))
