Q:

Since today is the official day of lies, let’s take a look back at some old promises ArenaNet made us. Have you guys noticed how hard it is to actually find the developer update posts in the ArenaNet forum? There used to be a nice blog with the relevant information before the game released, but all there is now is a very crowded News archive filled with Gem Store advertisement.

All the way back in January 2013, we got this little bit of news, in which Colin mentions the importance of avoiding event repetition:

“The more persistent events we can provide in a specific area, the less often each of the events in that area needs to occur, which in turn adds to the sense of an ever-evolving open world.”

Meanwhile, we got the Silverwastes, that are just the same two events repeating over and over (defend from the Mordrem – rebuild walls – defend from the Mordrem again – and so on), until a Breach, and then back to the beginning. Definitely an “ever-evolving open world”, right?

It was also said:

“Improving the new player experience to make it easier for new players to learn how to play GW2, enter the game world, and more quickly learn the game without being overwhelmed.”

See? The marvelous and loved NPE update, that dumbified the early game, had its roots far deeper than we expected.

Later, on July 2013, we got a new update. It was said then:

“We’ll begin regularly adding new skills and traits to the game for each profession to expand your characters and builds!”

…With “regularly” meaning “once and never again”, it appears, considering how we got one new profession-specific skill since release and nothing else; and only once we got new traits.

It was said:

“We’ll expand all crafting professions to allow them to reach a new milestone: 500 points!”

…Which in truth meant "all crafting professions other than Chef and Jeweler, as those are still down on 400.

It was said:

“On top of this, you’ll also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013”

…Which has been changed to, “you will see a handful of new legendary weapons on our expansion, that maybe will be released on 2015, and hopefully a few new weapons later”. Yay for accuracy.

Oh, and it was also said:

“On top of all of this, look for the return of some of your favorite holiday festivals and super adventures mixed in among our Living World updates”

Sooooo true, right?

So, what was YOUR favourite old promise for GW2?

Since I’ve never been promised anything I’ll reserve this space for when they do and break it.

Fire up the Hyperbowl ma, we’re going to town!

Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

You think Anet lies?

THAT’S NOTHING!

I was promised millions from a Nigerian prince years ago and yet to see a penny of it!

Considering these things as anything akin to a personal promise to the player base just brings up the question if some players tend to take the game FAR too seriously.

If anyone playing this game can seriously make the claim they have not received their original $60 worth of entertainment, then ask for a refund. I am unable to see how badmouthing individuals within a company (that you WANT things from) is ever going to get you what you want (unless it’s just some misplaced revenge of some sort), but I’m sure this thread will make you feel better.

Oh, Test … still nothing better to do than push your anti-anet agenda. Sad.

If people cared about false promises from a game dev as much as broken promises from politicians.. The world could’ve been a better place.

But you know.. priorities

I wonder how many posters got banned from the forums, and made a new account. Maybe we could have that function that had over in GW2Guru in our new forum software, should it ever appear.

OT…I seem to remember disclaimers to those announcements. Also, if you want to read the old Blog Posts, just use the Wayback Machine.

Good luck.

And this is why they are not so keen to communicate.

Every single thing they ever say is considered a written in stone promise and even if they are very clear that things might change, people will bring it up years after in order to bash them for “lying”.

Test:
You keep trying to bring this topic back, even afer it gets closed and dies off.
This is going to turn into another pointless discussion on how you think that Anet is a lyng cheating company. While everyone else is happy, fine, and content with what they have given us. Please lay off it already.
So we didn’t get what was “promised” But almost everyone took those things as what Anet wanted to do, but instead changed the direction they were heading, and decided on something else. Not as a set in stone promise that they didn’t deliver on.

What ever bone you have to pick with Anet, please take it up with them instead of posting your rants that don’t do anything but stir up trouble. Thanks!

People are quick to forget fulfilled promises, but always remember broken ones.

Can you also do a list of what they promised and delivered? (For a game that doesn’t even have a monthly fee?).

Let me start!

-No subscription fees.
-A Living breathing world in which the character has influence upon.
-Free Living Story updates
-No Pay to Win.
-Being able to replay Living world episodes
-The ability to play the game how I want, and not be forced into certain activities.
-The ability to store skins, and use them at will.
-The ability to buy gem store items using in-game gold.
-The LFG system.
-Fractals.
-New bosses, maps, and fight mechanics.

To name a few of the things that were promised and delivered.
Well done Anet!!! Here’s a cookie!!
