I have been playing video games since the old Intellivision video console in the 80s. I played my first “MMO” on The Sierra Network (TSN) back in the early 90s (they had a 4-person dungeon crawl that was fun). I played a lot of stand-alone console games for years because I didn’t have the internet connection to be able to handle MMOs. I came into the world of modern MMORPGs when my partner let me play WoW about 7 or 8 years ago (yes, she “let” me because we both knew it would turn into a major time suck and possibly affect our relationship).

Both of my boys are avid video gamers, they play both console and online games. And my grandkids love video games. I’m working on getting them interested in RPGs now that they are getting old enough to play D&D. ;-)

I love playing games. I have played WoW, LOTRO, DDO, EQ2, NWO, Myst URU, GW2, STO, PlanetSide 2, Rift, Path of Exile, and now GW2. And those are just some of the MMOs. I have played so many console games I’m not sure I could name them all.

I am in the over-50 crowd and I don’t anticipate hanging up my controller any time soon.

Loved the C64..cassette tape anyone? XD

Had a cassette drive but on my VIC-20. I would come home from school, start loading the game via the drive, go watch TV for about an hour and if I was lucky it loaded. About 6 times out of 10 it didn’t. People complain about 30 second loading screens in GW2 LOL.

I was that kid that went to Radio Shack in the mall, back when they were a thing and going to the mall was a thing, and programed my name in BASIC to scroll on the display computer they had. I played Zork, all text and imagination.

Without disclosing my age I think that dates me enough.

Those were the days. You also had to stop the cassette player at the right moment before the next game started “playing”. Hahaha.

Being in my 40’s and being a female gamer always seems to draw confusion from my younger customers, since I work the video game section at my store.
Because, “Adults don’t play video games”.
Well who do you think makes them?

Anyway, I enjoyed GW and when beta for GW2 was available, I just fell in love all over again. It has issues, but at least it isn’t ESO.

Well I’m 40, and my 4 yr old daughter says I’m old

I started playing games on a monochrome based computer game on my dad’s TRS-80 model 4, being 8 maybe 10 yrs old. (should be beginning or mid 80s’) Things I remember was endless swapping of floppy disks and the victory of bringing the dog’s bone back to the dogpen. Life seems simpeler when gaming at 10 yrs old
I really hated my fathers daisy-wheel printer… (sounds like a machine gun)
But the dot matrix which came after it (with a new and improved abacus) was no real improvement… (sounds like a chain saw..)

I started on a
Tandy TRS 80 Model 4, (Z80, 4Mhz) 128 Kb RAM, 2x 180Kb 5.25" FDD. 80*24 characters. , It had a graphics option and was able to show graphics, monochrome only. BEEP- audio 1 tone, oh and a a 1200 baud telephone modem, or was it less??

Now using an
Intel i7 3930 hex-core(3.2-3.8Ghz), 32Gb RAM, 1x 256 Gb SSD,1x 250gb (swap) HDD (10krpm), 2Tb RAID0 set (7200rpm), 2 Nvidia780 GTX 3Gb G-DDR5, 2 screens:
1) 1920*1200 high-resolution 32bit color graphic
2) 1920*1080 high-resolution 32bit color graphic
7.1 Audio, (using 5.1 Headset)
With Gbit network inside the house and 100(down)/10Mbi(up) Internet connection..

In between a
386, 40 Mhz (my first with a graphics card for gaming)
486DX4, 100 Mhz SB AWE32, Voodoo Video
Athlon64 2000+, 1.6Ghz Mhz 2Gb
(Dual) Quad core Opteron 2376, 2.3Ghz Mhz 16Gb

I seen it all since ~1980:

Rise and fall of C-64, Atari, MSX 1,2,2+, DOS 3.+, GUI introduction,
8 bit limit, 16 bit limit, 32 bit limit, “millenium bug”, Introduction of GPU’s, audio, the mouse..
(4040), Z80, 8080, 8086,80×86, Pentiums/Athlons, S3 and Diamond GPU’s, the rise of Apple & AMD and so on…

One thing I learned: There is no High-End, only expensive computers

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Grin. I am loving this thread. I too am over 50. My first experience with video games was my better half dragging me kicking and screaming into City Of Heroes. After finally deciding it was something he and I could do together, I relaxed and found I was loving it. When NCSOFT shut down City Of Heroes, I wanted another a MMO, so, after doing research here I am.

I am a clutz and cannot do jumping puzzles, and have a hard time jumping up things, but I have found that hopping up to Vistas is actually good for improving my hand eye coordination. Performing digital homicide is also a stress reliever, and as someone said above, playing the game sharpens the mind. When you are as old as I am, anything that sharpens the mind is truly splendid thing

Video games are just for kids??? Oh kitten NOOOO

I’m 60 and proud to be a gaming gramma! Have been playing video games since the days of Pong, but GW2 was my first MMORPG and I’m also playing FF xiv. My dd and son-in-law introduced me to GW2, and I’m happy they did. So, yes there are some oldies but goodies out there in Tyria. For my 61st birthday in a couple of months, I’m having my daughters, their husbands, and my little 16month old grandson get in costume and go with me to FantasyCon. Game on!

Omg, be my grandma please.

I’m only 29 but when talking about video games I always feel older than I am because I started playing on my parents ZX Spectrum when I was 2 years old and I’ve kept it up ever since. So I remember a lot of games I’m technically too young for (fortunately this was mostly before age ratings really existed).

It always seems weird to me talking to people my own age whose first experience was getting a Gameboy Advance or Playstation for Christmas. I still think of those are relatively recent.

46 here… more pve than pvp since DaoC. Done the pvp ladder climb once and it was a full time job staying in the top ten.
Having worked for a german desktop publisher in QA I really enjoy the overall quality of the work Anet`s doing (also update stability, many ppl have no idea about the work behind that) and still love to run around areas of Tyria enjoying the eye candy (I think their still pimping it here and there, might be me though) and ambience. Still hate that RNG hates me but I know I`m not the only one out there, so… yeah.

Boxie Togg (main)… probably Tyrias only Asuran Mesmer that ultimately fails at jumping puzzles
Stinky McLane… the only Necro known to have a toothpaste fetish
Lefty (give me a second) Fiddlesticks… one Engineer, two clumbsy hands…

Great theme)) I’ll show it to my wife) 42 here) In my humble opinion, computer games have become a full-fledged art direction. If adults enjoy for example painting in an art gallery, why not enjoy the work of artists, composers game designers in a good game?)
Or another comparison – why instead of party poker or chess is not fight in PvP)

I’m nearly 29, but my guild has a few “oldies.” We have our very own “granny,” as well as a woman in her 40’s who we even got to play cards against humanity (and oh the things we learned about her husband)! I find that I prefer hanging with the older folks, and I have no problem waiting a few minutes for somebody to take care of their children

Hello all, 62 here and started playing video games with Pong. I have played quite a few MMOs and started with GW1 in 2007. Played WoW, Age of Conan, Aion, Lord of the Rings Online and of course GW2. Played GW2 since early weekend on 2 accounts for a total of almost 5,000 hours with an accumulative of almost 17K AP. I have 3 accounts on GW1 and over 6K hours there. Playing Dragon Age Inquisition and GW1 most of the time right now. Will be a gamer as long as I am still breathing!

The average age of my guild is around 40. I’m slightly below that.

Much of my guild has been together on various games for nearly 7 years now, though we’ve picked up a few more members on GW2. We play all content: open world, LS, dungeons, fractals, WvW, and sPvP.

I started with the NES when I was 9, and my sister was 3; and as of 6 years ago (the last time I had access to a working TV) the original NES still worked (Zelda is still an awesome game). My sister and I cooperatively played through Deja Vu. The SNES is still the best system ever made.

I also play tabletop games (EuroGames and RPG’s like Pathfinder), and occasionally play single player games.

While some of my other guildmembers are long term GW1 players, I only got the game in August. I’ve since earned 36 HoM points, and am greatly enjoying my playthrough.

Another 40+ female gamer signing in, don’t remember playing pong, but I do remember playing Repton on the BBC computers at school in the break times. I have a choice I can either veg in front of the telly watching soaps all evening or I can play games where I have to think a bit and react to things, I know which I prefer and hopefully it will help keep me a bit sharper too.

I’ll also admit to being a wargamer and a table top roleplayer, not long started running a 13th Age game for a group of friends who are all pretty much in their 40s. Gaming shouldn’t just be aimed at the young.

I’m older than dirt, but that’s just a biological reality I can’t change.

Some JP’s are a pain and my reaction time is not what it was a few decades ago. But I play this game to have fun and as long as I’m having fun, I’ll keep playing.

Oh, almost forgot, I turned 70 this past summer.

That’s really cool to see so much ’’older’’ people are playing!
I knew it was many older players, but I didn’t knew it was THAT much. Really cool. ^.^
But back in GW I met alot, and I mean alot of players who were over 30~40~50 and even over 60 years old.
I also find couple playing is soooo cute. I met a few couples back in GW, was really nice to play with these kind of people.

And I’m 19 by the way.. feels like I’m a kiddo here comparing to you all!
