There’s been a lot of complaining about the way that the tickets and various weapon skin drops have been handled and how it’s all a giant slot machine designed to drive “empty” purchases in the gem store.

I get that, and I care about that, and I understand the frustration, but something else has also occurred to me.

Every event now has had these skins drop. Halloween, Karka invasion, Wintersday, F&F, Southsun Cove….

Why, exactly, does anybody think they deserve to get everything from every event? Why should they?

Each event has had some permanent indicator of achievement, whether it be titles or special items, that everybody was able to get through sufficient participation. Each event has also had some low chance at some special skin, the Sclerite weapons being the current carrot-on-a-stick.

Now, I disagree strenuously with the use of the gem store to hold out this carrot and this behavior is EXACTLY what I and many others warned and worried about when the gem store was announced, but ignoring that, everybody has had a shot at the skins each time and that appears to be a thing that will continue with new skins coming for Dragon Bash.

Point being, if you try for all of them, the odds you won’t get at least one of them are very low. The odds you’ll be able to carry around a skin from all of them is also very low. And why shouldn’t it be?

Why do some people who play MMOs feel like they must have every possible thing? Why can’t some things be special? Why must every “special” item actually be so common that you can’t go two steps without seeing it on somebody’s toon?

I don’t like the way that the skins are distributed. I am strenuously opposed to baiting players to spend real money on such frivolities as virtual dice rolls. But at the same time, I’m not opposed to the low distribution rate. Some things should be special and not everything should be achievable solely because you decided to sit on your butt in front of the computer for eight hours a day for two weeks straight running back and forth between two events. That’s not an achievement and it’s not something you should be proud to show off anyway.

Keep the low rate. Change the way they’re acquired. Make the gem store useful and stop distributing slot machine-like crap.

I don’t understand why it needs to be “special” or rare. If everyone wants to have one, then let them, it just a skin and doesn’t effect the game in anyway. They should just sell them for $5 and call it good.

The only reason to do an event is to get all the items it has to offer. Running back and forth in south sun doing the same event for 2-3 weeks for a chance for a box to drop to get a chance for a skin token is not fun.

But that being said its the way it is so i just role with it lol.

Because it’s a game. A recreational thing. And why the hell not.

I think if there’s an event in the game, then everybody should be able to get something from it. It’s a fun event and people like getting stuff. Now, that being said there should also be rare items that everybody can’t get as well. Why can’t we have both? Rare items and items everyone can get from these events.

If I’m reading the event page right, it looks like that’s exactly what happening with Dragon’s Bash.

The chance of getting the skins has gotten worse as of late. Over the last two events mainly. I quit after F&F because of it and I hadn’t missed an event, title, or item from an event that I wanted until then.

First you had that Molten Alliance dungeon that was only around for two weeks that you could only get the drops from the last chest. People claimed they ran that thing upwards of 200 times and didn’t get the drops. That is not fun.

Now it looks like Anet is still up to this garbage with South Sun. That’s okay though because when you make content for players and they run it and aren’t rewarded they tend to feel slighted and quit running your content.

For some of us (not all, only speaking for some), it’s not that we want them all. It’s that we want THAT one thing because it fits one of our characters so very, very well. But if it’s something locked behind RNG, then there’s NO way to ensure that you’ll get it, no matter how much effort you put into it. And if it’s Gemstore RNG, then you could easily spend $100 or more and not get it.

What they should do is what they’ve done with Fractals and with the Super Adventure Box – keep the chest at the end RNG, BUT you are able to earn “currency” that can be used to buy what you could also possibly get in the RNG. That way, even if you ran it 200 times, and you didn’t get it in the RNG, you can still at least get it via the “currency” given to you.

And the items don’t need to be super-cheap either. Make it as expensive for the cost as what the SAB or any of the other dungeon items are.

Also – they SHOULD also have the item up in the Gem Store for those of us who may not want to run the dungeon, but are willing to shell out the actual money for the item.

If they went this three-pronged approach, then I think 90-95% of the player-base would be covered. (Whether people would be happy with it or not is up to the individual player, but at least we aren’t pigeon-holed in to “you must do it this way or no way!” I mean, isn’t that what they were wanting us to do? Play the game OUR WAY?!)

I mostly think it is a waste.
These are usully some awesome skins and the chance to get them is really low, to the point that they might be rarer then Legendaries.
You see, you can get Legendarys at one point. But these things are gone then, maybe never coming back.

I hope they put them in at other points in the game. Maybe as part of new fractals for example

It is fine with me if only some people will have it. However make it something you will have to work towards. Then make some rarer skins than others, let the casuals have something nice, and let the hardcore people work towards something nice.
This isn’t something you put effort in, not ingame at least. Clicking over 9000 boxes to get a skin is special in it’s own way, and I don’t mean that in a positive manner. :/

RNG is not a good thing when it comes to one time skins. I do agree with Op to an extent because having a specific skin should be rare or at least show that you were around at the time. Having more awesome skins available to us, allows us to customize our characters and it adds to the game. Hiding those things in boxes, especially gem boxes suck. Give us an ingame way to earn it and give an option to buy it outright in the store. I am really excited for this festival but I will not buy boxes from the store no matter how.much I like the skins. I apologise for typos and format- posting from my phone

I don’t care about skins or mini pets, titles or achievements, what I do care about is content, and I’m not talking about the content that they put in and turn around 2 weeks later and take away, I mean permanent content, and some kind of end-game which this game has none of, I would like a new dungeon, or some new fractals or something that is added to the game that is left in the game, I have been playing for months and all they have really added is this new karka queen and I think it is really lame, the vet and champ hatchlings dont drop anything, neither do the poppers and there are tons of them and they drop you like nothing, does not seem worth it to me when you have broken armor and all you have in you bags are trophies and karka shells that are only good for crappy exotic armor that is soulbound on acquire.

That’s my thoughts. That’s the reason why most of us recognize there’s a serious lack of in new in game cosmetics every month. It’s like no you can’t have anything that’s cool by just doing somethings yourself or playing solo it’s all gotta be with a group for everything or else by RMT only. smh

Where are the minigames with cosmetic rewards? Where’s the ability to change multiple armor sets out with a single click in the ui? where’s the cosmetics that one can get for karma that’s been added since Nov so far all I’m seeing is they changed the racial weapons (didn’t that used to cost gold?) and they added guild missions which you have to attend all the time or else nothing occurs. (see this as a problem especially for a casual game, can’t do guild missions without your guild present and still get the rewards and there’s no que to join up with other guilds to complete these things for currency. I can do this in most other games I play. STO for example).

Why shouldn’t they? I can understand hiding some rewards behind a skill barrier, but i can’t understand(*) denying them based on luck. Especially in case of shop items, where real money is involved. If two people put the same effort into the game, they should be rewarded equally. It’s just that simple.

(*) Barring some purely business reasons for this, of course (though my comment of those would definitely hit the obscenity filter), which i can understand, but cannot condone.

Why, exactly, does anybody think they deserve to get everything from every event? Why should they?

Not everything. Just 1-2 things out of a possible 10. It’s completely stupid to have cosmetic gear be completely left up to 2 levels of pure RNG.

It’s an unethical thing for ANet to scream about removing grinds, yet implement something as sinister as this. You have to grind for chests which have a terrible chance at dropping. And then you have a terrible chance of getting a weapon token from there.

Pick one, or the other.

Either make the chest drop way more often or make the chests rare, with a guaranteed skin. That way, people can spend real money on a chest if they want a skin, or just farm the chests for free.

One of the goals of this game is to progress through cosmetics. Allow people to do that. Allowing more people to have these rare items, doesn’t diminish their value if it’s just pure RNG. They can’t be sold anyway, and it’s not a prestigious thing to just be lucky.

And yes, this is a pure money grab from ANet, and not even an honest one. They should have the skins be available to be bought, outright. Or, allow people to gain them in game from actually doing something besides farming.

Your faith is your weakness.

Not sure why it isn’t possible to obtain the skins from a number of different methods — as drops from the supply crates, from tickets that could be purchased via gem store, or the tickets/skins themselves being tossed on the TP by folks that don’t like/want them … that way people that never intend to spend any RL $ can still shoot the odds at picking up a ticket for a skin from the supply crate, folks that don’t mind shelling out a bit of cash or trading in some gold for gems can pick it up from the gemstore, or they can just snag it off the TP.

Many people have raised this point as well, and I think it one that absolutely defies logic — why have devs spend the time designing the skins if only .00001% of the player population is ever going to rcv one? If it’s meant to be frustratingly impossible to obtain simply because it forces players to either spend hour upon hour trying to get the crates or spending dollar after dollar in the gemstore only for a minority to ever rcv them, well, kitten … is it any surprise it’s left a foul taste in a lot of mouths?

This direction is to support the gem store, not the gameplay. And yes, it is an achilles heel that will doom this game, like the soul system was to the otherwise excellent game rift. Temporary content that almost no one will get = no content. After a while the empty carrots don’t hold any interest.
