So how come literally every class has one weapon set/build that completely dominates in pvp?

I thought this game was about diversity in weapons and play styles, not who has the most regen rangers and mesmers on their team.

Telling us which of these classes are which and what weapons they use would be useful to make your thread actually open for discussion, instead of what it is now.

Actually, each and every class has more than one build for PvP .

However, there will always be an optimal build and trait set-up for PvP … always ….. ALWAYS.

And the very second that Devs change certain weapon stats and skills to make them more “viable” (as people like to say) … a whole new optimal build/trait set-up will emerge, and that new one will then become the most often used.

Simply put, in high level PvP where one encounters the most skilled players, you are also going to have to narrow your builds to the 1 or 2 most optimal due to the quality of your opponents. This is NOT a failure on the part of the game developers, but simply the “nature of the beast” so to speak.

This is not to say that some (NOT ALL) classes tend to be far more pigeonholed than others, and that Anet should “free” them up a bit so players can diversify more. But you have to remember that balancing for PvP is very difficult.

Note that in WvW, as opposed to PvP, each and every class has far more “viable” builds and weapon choices due to the nature of that aspect of the game. And then there is PvE, where once again, your choices and builds expand even further than in WvW.

PS: Try and remember that I did say, "This is not to say that some (NOT ALL) classes tend to be far more pigeonholed than others, and that Anet should “free” them up a bit so players can diversify more. ". LOL

oh yeah? What’s the best weapon to use for a mesmer?

I’d say staff is very handy for defensive utilities. Oh but the sword is highest DPS, what off hand do you go with? focus provides one of the highest damage phantasms with an interrupt and light field/reflect to boot. But the pistol provides the iduelist who can attack at range and keep the pressure on plus the interrupt. But the offhand sword, who doesn’t love dual swords with iswordsman.

I think your point is incredibly invalid.

RIP in peace Robert

Because there isn’t really enough options or good traits spread around the trees, there are absolutely horrible traits/horrible trees that didn’t get much thought at all, and then there is crazy good ones.

Tbh, they need to bring other trees in-line with the main good ones and add more meta’s and more fun builds. Its really really really stale atm.

There is only a few ways to play and so many options that could be but are not because of simply terrible traits.

Well every class does have an optimal build for 1v1 (Usually heavily defensive + conditions) However most PvP is team based, were people need to take roles. A team full of bunkers isn’t going to fair well against a well balanced team (Unless its all ele bunkers kitten them seriously). But you get the point, You should also never base balance off of PUG matches of SPvP or WvWvW, games are balanced around the highest level of play (teams with voice communication and set roles) most pug matches are just Brazilians running around with their head cut off, in which case yes glass cannon thiefs will pick people off easily and with no coordination bunkers will just run a muck due to no focus fire.

False. There will always been an optimal build for each class for each role that class can fulfill. But currently, in GW2, we don’t even have that.

I can’t comment on PVP however they definitely need to make things more diverse with PVE. Kaaboose went into detail into just what is wrong on the front of PVE and some of the reasons why there really isn’t a GW2 Trinity there is only 1 accepted build for everything right now in PVE and that’s Zerker.

I hope their rewards system includes a change in how events are handled to better include the support and the CC.

Could you imagine a game where there was perfect balance across all classes? I know you can’t because it doesn’t exist.

90% of dungeon runners are zerker, and if ur not ur either not welcome or ur a guardian. Pathetic attempt at balance…

I agree. It seems as if 90% of people switch to the build they see works best and they don’t try experimenting with the traits and skills themselves. This would be okay with me, but it gets bland seeing a bunch of one class using the same weapons. The D/D Elementalist was one example. A guy made a video on a fantastic build and all Elementalists flocked to D/D while using the same build as he did. And Blizzard actually did a heck of a job balancing their classes. Other people may not think so, but a tanky warrior was just as likely to beat a dps druid as the other way around. There were rarely “Overpowered” classes/skills/armor that tipped the scale in someone’s favor, and I rarely saw people complain about unbalanced classes in WoW. Sure, there were a few whiners, but GW2 seems to have a lot more whiners, and for good reason.
