To be honest, I try to avoid giving presents that might be causing side effects.
MMOs are addictive by nature and with an item shop, there is the possibility that the person you give it for free will spend way more money as intended on the game.
I do not want to be the reason for an addiction of a friend, for the loss of huge amount of time or money.
But that’s just my 2c.

I was thinking about what to get some people for the upcoming holiday season and I realized that one of the nice things about GW2 having no sub fee is that I can give it as a gift and don’t have to worry about guilting someone into a sub fee. This was probably one of the big reasons I never gave anyone WoW as a gift back when that was my MMO of choice.
I would wait a couple of weeks. There will be plenty of new MMO’s you might want to gift
