Should I ever open a large chest with a character that is not level 80? For example I have a few tri-colored keys from the nightmare tower stuffs. Will I get better loot opening the chest with a level 80 then with a level 50? Will the level 50 still have a chance at the rare exotics? I enjoy doing the events scaled up with my lower level characters because they are more challenging and they give great experience, but I don’t want worse loot just because that char isn’t level 80.

tri colour chests do scale according to character level- so open them with your 80

In general large chest contents are spawned at character level so yes it will be better if you are lv 80. I’m not completely sure about Tricolor. Loots bags contents are determined when they dropped, so you can open them with a lower level character.
