Drunken Alliance [DKAL]
Piken Square [EU]
Hey everyone
I recently came back to Guild Wars after taking a break for a while, and I really can’t decide what profession to level next…
I want to really master one of them as that’s my kind of thing, where I stick to one profession and get them maxed out gear etc.
I currently have 2 80s – Warrior and Thief, as well as a level 40 Elementalist, 25 Guardian, and a 10 Mesmer.
This is where I came to ask you guys what profession you guys think is good for these things:
I’m really just wondering at the moment.
Thanks.
I cannot help you in terms of SPvP, but in terms of WvW…
As a guy who has an 80 warrior, thief, elementalist, guardian (my main and most playtime) and mesmer…
Ele- Plenty of ranged aoe skills that hard hit. Moderate survivability.Does well in WvW zergs since you can nuke from a far distance and nuke hard.
Thief – can be an aggressive class. Master it well and you can take solace in that you annoy enemies (especially when you gank and harrass them). Terrible in WvW, though considering it’s mostly a zerg fest)
Guardian – greatest class in GW2 in terms of overall gameplay (but I’m biased). One of the best PvE options in the game and great in survivability. Largely limited to melee/mid-range. OK for WvW, just don’t expect a lot of bags.
Mesmer – I don’t have much experience with this class, but it’s complicated, squishy and slow. I hate this class
Warrior – best DPS/survivability combo in the game. Can excel both at melee/range.
So all in all, I think Ele and Warrior fit what you want. The other classes lack aggressive playstyle and toughness.
I vote for the slow, squishy mesmer or guardian.
Mesmers are slow out of combat, but they have excellent in combat mobility. They can be effective and very tanky with the right build, but also make excellent glass cannons. People are constantly coming up with new builds / variations, which is great. They can be difficult to get use to and are a pain to level the first time. (I’ve leveled two, the second one was easy)
Guardians are an all around great class. They are also somewhat slow. However, the builds tend to be a little more static. It’s like we’ve figured out the best ones and everyone goes with one of those.
dunno how about pvp, bout pve in coop – engie works well for me, got back from long break aswell. i like him because with all skill-sets he can overtake quite wide arange of roles and even in one fight easily change from heavy dmg dealer to conditional damager and supporter to straight forward healer. imho
Hmm I’d say that it’s not so much what profession you choose as it is what build you have for that profession. Honestly, I’d say that the best profession would be the one that you have the most fun playing. Any class can be mastered to a degree and they’re constantly balancing the classes overall so I’d say pick a fun one and maybe research some builds and go from there.
I’ve had the most fun on my Mesmer so far, although Elementalist comes in a close second if not a tie for first. Hope this helps!
Warrior has the lowest survivability. Despite having the highest base vitality and toughness, it has absolutely no sustain. It does not fit what he is looking for.
While Guardians are great all around, and probably the best class, they are not aggressive at all. The play style can put someone to sleep at times.
Ele, Mesmer, and Engineer are what you are looking for.
These classes, when played well, all have extremely high survivability, are great in PvP, are aggressive and take a lot of time to master.

I’ll second this. These are the only three classes I’ve taken to 80; I prefer the harder to master classes. None of them are squishy in the right hands, and they all adapt to situations beautifully.
Ele is somewhat bound to skill rotations, but once you learn those, you learn how to adapt them on the fly.
Mesmer is a ton of fun and the utilities are some of the best around—if they can’t believe their eyes, then you’re doing it right. Caveat to the Mesmer: sometimes you become a portal bot.
Engineer is all about kit management. Elixir builds are useful, especially for Might stacking, but there is usually at least one kit on your bar. Knowing when to use which kit or weapon is key.
Hmmm this is all really interesting…
It seems like it’s down to Mesmer and Elementalist…
I think I might go with Mesmer due to the fact that I felt Elementalist was a bit like, well it’s a bit hard to explain – but like Invoker for any Dota 2 players – kinda a burden of knowledge, as in you have to know all the different combos and there’s a lot of very fast button movements.
Then again, I’m going to give them both a go…
So thanks everyone
P.S. Does anyone know of a good Elementalist leveling build? Mine is an absolute pain to level at the moment (level 38) and I can’t find where/what to level with her.
Thanks.
Any more ideas?
Necro! Most people will probably dissagree, but i have played it for 800+ hours now and its amazing!
We are kind of made for playing agressive and staying in the combat (Since we have no escape option), and have toooonnnsss of AOE! We are not squishy either, because of death shroud (A transform we can go into that gives us an extra HP bar and new skills)
I also have 31k HP with my build so im quite tanky. Most people call necro OP now, but the thing is… they have always been if mastered. We didnt get buffed to much, we got burning and that suddenly made us op. Its a great PvP class, not squishy, very fun, very good when mastered and its overall my favourite profession, hands down!
- Aggressive play-style
- Good in PvP
- Great when mastered
- Not too squishy
- Fun to Play
Engineer fits perfectly in your demands.
