Backpacks in this game are becoming more and more obnoxious. I do like the high fantasy setting in this game, but the way certain things are made are becoming too ridiculous, with giant obnoxious wings being one of them.

People are starting to look like a walking disco. This was fine in the past when The Moot was close to the only disco inspired item.

But these days there’s over flashy armours with over flashy infuses that causes some really large effect around characters, and people can stack this up.

Large backpacks just covers the screen far too much and it’s becoming really, really annoying.

So I want to suggest an option that hide the model of other people’s back pieces.

I’d love to have the option to flat out not allow certain skins on my side. Seeing the Bifrost, Legendary fractal backpack, and chaos gloves on every character you’ve made just doesn’t do it for me. To not be rude and just say they’re eye bleed skins to be mean, they can really bother people’s eyes.

Also I think it’s China that doesn’t like skulls being shown? They and other similar cultures would benefit from the option.

I’d like a setting like the character model limit/quality that when all players are set to be placeholders (with placeholder weapons and no back items and miniatures preferably, I think they still show up), I’d still see my own party normally.

I want to be play the game on max settings, because I am able to. I don’t want to lower the graphics just because some players want to make the most obnoxious looking characters ever. I rather have an option that remove objects—backpacks in this case—that have started to destroy the awesome and beautiful appearance of the rest of the game.

Backpacks and flashier armours and effects were finer back in the older days (except for the humongous spell effects that were going on in combat) but now flash armours, visual infusions and obnoxiously big backpacks in form of wings have appeared far too much, and just destroys the general feeling of the game world.

Being able to scale down particle effects doesn’t hide the actual item from the person. They can still see that you went to the trouble to get it, they just don’t have to be blinded as they play.

Anet went to the trouble of creating all the visuals in this game, but they provided graphic adjustment tools and are not hurt if we use them.

Imagine going to the theater only to have the person in front of you wear a glowing, sparkling, noise making, enormous top hat that intruded into every watched scene. Your ability to see the play is impacted.

For the most part it seems as if people want this more to deal with highly intrusive pieces than just those that they personally dont care for.

Lol really? The only real story in this game is instanced, so the only. Problem you have are the ones you make your self, the only thing people with wings etc spoil is your enjoyment. It is really not as bad as everyone makes out.

Sure a way to hide things would be good for those who want to QQ about it, maybe add standard models so every one else looks the same, because that will make it better…….

To be fair, the larger backpacks, especially when used by Charr and Norn, do interfere with the ability to do jumping puzzles in places where the camera is pretty limited, and even moreso when you’re playing an Asura. Having the ability to hide backpacks (or even go to standard models) for those places wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Alright, I personally would not use it, but I totally agree with having an option of using placeholders instead of characters, or even just turning off sparklies and what not on armor. And here are multiple reasons as to why that option would be good:

1.) Some people get headaches from different things visually. Like a literal headache, not just “Oh, I don’t like the looks of that. I’m gonna say it gives me a headache.”

2.) Some people come to Tyria to travel to a high-fantasy setting, not to play Groovin’ Grinder: The Disco Fantasy RPG. When I play games, usually I pick to play games based on their settings, not just gameplay, ect. Example, I personally don’t care for SciFy settings, but love High Fantasy, one of the reasons I fell in love with the Guild Wars universe. An example, what if you want to play a high-fantasy and you’re totally enjoying some dark storylines, such as those in which characters get killed off or misfortune befalls them, then you get out of it and have to do an open world part to continue the story, and none other than Cptn Fancypants comes along doing the same events as what you need on his rainbow sparkling attire shooting rainbows to vanquish his foes. That kinda kills the experience IMO of someone wanting to continue their dark streak.

3.) Some peoples’ computers perform not so great. Perhaps theirs is one that performs just at the point where it no longer uses placeholders, but once the map loads enough to turn off the placeholders, their computer just is at its limit, whirring away furiously to try to keep up. What if they had a simple checkbox to tick that would take their experience from frustratingly laggy to the awesome adventure that is Guild Wars 2? Would you want to deny someone the enjoyment of what apparently is a game that you love so much that you want to show off your skins in?

Okay, and for cons against these systems:
1) It has to be coded; may take away from something else for a little bit.
2) People want their skins to be looked at and admired.
3) Sometimes someone with a great imagination and art skills can make one thing that someone think looks ugly look amazing just by using the right combination of shades and colors.

And of course these lists are not exhaustive, just y’know, something for both sides to think about.

lol at some of these responses. It reminds me of the thread a long time ago back when music instruments were first put in game and people asked for a sound slider. There were people arguing that if they spent gems to buy a music instrument then there shouldn’t be a way to turn off the sound. Everyone had to be able to hear them whether they wanted to or not.

I wouldn’t use a visual slider myself, unless it was affecting my fps, but if it can added and people want to use it you’ll never know that they can’t see your Bifrost/wings/queen bee/whatever. Just enjoy how you look and let those who like to see you see you and those who don’t, don’t.

I didn’t say anything about story.

A play is, though, comprised of story as well as scenery, costumes, actors, and so on. Blocking view of the stage and/or talking over the music/actors interferes with the spectacle regardless of story.

For that matter theaters prohibit cellphones, waving banners, etc at big summer blockbusters despite the fact that story is all but irrelevant in such movies.

If others like the OP would prefer to turn off backpacks altogether, I don’t mind at all. And I don’t see why other players should mind. And he’s asking for ANet to give him a solution that would work better for him. It’s not like he’s asking for the backpacks he hates to be removed from the game. That would be absurd.

He’s just asking for some means to enjoy the high graphics settings without having to see the backpacks he doesn’t like for whatever reason.

And there are good reasons for there to be a hider. Jumping puzzles in areas with already bad camera angles. People who get literal headaches from a particular backpack. One of the backpacks is just incredibly ugly to them and it ruins their enjoyment of the game.

But it doesn’t hurt you if they put the option in I know a lot of people that hate all of the particle effects in game, I run standard models for everything in PvP since I hate seeing the clutter from armors and legendary weapons on top of the skills being spammed, why do we have to also turn down our graphics because someone else has Ghostly Infusions/Legendary weapons/ Annoying back pieces and all the particle effects from the massive amount of Aoe Skills.

If they gave sliders for those specific things it would not impact you in the slightest, they could have separate sliders for party member/ enemies, separate sliders for your own particles and everyone else on skills and the same for weapons/ armor. Again it wouldn’t impact you, and we wouldn’t have to put up with your choices of having any of those annoying effects

This is not going to happen, imo.

Why?

The desire to show off is a basic human motivation shared by very many people. The game survives as it is (no gear treadmill endgame) because it features a cosmetic endgame. While players would not know whether those other players were seeing their fashion accomplishments, the status quo affords them the belief that anyone they run into will see them. Removing that could make a serious dent in the game’s ability to motivate players to pursue those things. While I don’t know the size of the demographic that would be demotivated, I believe it would be much larger than the group that will leave the game because they don’t like seeing such stuff.

I also believe that allowing players to selectively remove such gear pieces would be a non-trivial programming task. I’d rather the software engineers work on other stuff that would benefit greater numbers of players.

The problem with all of the particle effects in game is it makes it hard to see key animations from players and Mobs alike, it’s why in sPvP they gave the option for standard models but all of the Particle effects from skills is still a lot, and they keep toning them down. The places this would really help/ be impactful is in WvW and Raids/ Fractals where key animations need to be seen. Plus there is a thing as too much display clutter and with all of the particle effects on items now that needs to be addressed.

I definitely believe that if they do it it should be a “see all” or “see none” thing for backpacks. It’s the simplest.

Or give PvE the option to use standard character models as well like they do in PvP.

No letting players choose which backpacks they see and which they don’t.

The kicker part is they’ve already done this in PvP.

On the first tab of options there is a section for Competitive: Standard Enemy Models.

I really wish they would make this a choice for open world as well. Partly for the obnoxious light display that turns my screen into a seizure inducing nightmare but mostly for performance issues. It would make the game run a lot smoother on my end to not have to look at everyone’s glowy, fancy stuff.

I also wish they would add the option (that has been standard in most games for more than a decade) to hide other players effects. I still do not know what most of the bosses in the game look like because of the giant FX blob.

I wouldn’t mind if we had the choice to hide some of the flashy stuff.

All the vanity items I wear on my chars I wear for myself it gives a bit of personality, I wont have any sleepless nights if others don’t feel the need to see it

Far better is it to have a stout heart always
and suffer one’s share of evils, than to fear
what might happen.

The appearance of player characters are getting quite annoying. These are examples you see pretty much all the time, and everywhere, and it’s really taking its toll.

They’re pretty much all the same. There’s no originality.
