Option to hide other player's backpack
The kicker part is they’ve already done this in PvP.
Standard models in competive pvp exist because small Asura had a serious advantage over say Norn and Charr because the attack animations become unreadable on small characters. It is not even compareable to PVE.
Agreed. Some slider for flashy items and giant backpacks will be pretty nice.
25 charracters
The appearance of player characters are getting quite annoying. These are examples you see pretty much all the time, and everywhere, and it’s really taking its toll.
Taking it’s toll on what? I don’t see anything wrong in any of those pictures. The level of complaining over paltry, piddly crap is getting absurd.
If you don’t like how someone looks, don’t look at them.
For the record, I wear a metal smith backpack (3rd tier i think) and none of this bothers me at all.

It’s cluttering the game, and it’s difficult to not look somwhere when that’s where I need to look to prevent death, targeting an NPC or enemy or completely obscuring the whole camera from safe jumps. The armour, the obnoxious backpacks and the over glowing infusions are cluttering the screen, even hiding other effects. The general feel of the game also gives a ridiculous impression when this is all we see.
While I do understand the problem, I’m going to have to vote “No” on this idea.
Why? Because if we could hide backpacks or effects, then ANet would lose the restrictions on making them bearable. We’d have an “out” if we don’t want to see them, and they’d be free to go really over the top. I really don’t want that, I want them to be somewhat restricted and reserved on where they go from here.
Using the PvP generic models is about the best I can agree with. Sorry.
I want to be play the game on max settings, because I am able to. I don’t want to lower the graphics just because some players want to make the most obnoxious looking characters ever. I rather have an option that remove objects—backpacks in this case—that have started to destroy the awesome and beautiful appearance of the rest of the game.
You’re still lowering the graphics, just in very specific ways. Instead of removing some details on all the character, you’re removing all the details on some of the character. If someone with an awesome look (backpack included) walks by, you’ll never know it either way.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Ever been just standing at a crafting station and had the terrain start flashing a certain color? Different sections of terrain Just alternating flashing that color on the screen and then you see the person with some outfit and chaos gloves log in with that color. Than the terrain and character just keep making the entire screen flash until you relog.
Sometimes the entire screen turns in to a kaleidoscope triggered by certain costume/color combinations. This is the only game this happens to me.
Since there is already an option programmed in to the game (albeit for competitive only right now) to show standard character models, it shouldn’t be too difficult for them to add this to the rest of the game. It would help with both performance at the large fights, and would help with the horrible light shows that certain peoples characters create.

This thread is ostensibly directed to back items, per the title. But other valid subjects have popped up that are closely related. I vote no to the back item switch, but do believe Anet has permitted gear to inadvertently become a “griefing” feature.
Have you ever been gliding over a rock in Bloodstone Fen, getting your alignment just right to drop down onto bloodstone ore, just to have someone else open an opaque canopy of stars? It’s the same as a guy with wings standing on a ledge that you want to jump from but you can’t see anything until that guy leaves. Hope he/she is not afk.
I want a switch to turn off the griefing objects. I don’t mind looking at other peoples bunny ears as long as they don’t actually interfere with my ability to play.
My opinion is that the designers do not fully consider the impact of their choices before implementing them. That leads us to these threads trying to turn off the result of their choices.

This was better said and doesnt sound so “your colors offended me and my gender and my opinions im sensitive but dont call me that bc i get offended how dare you”
I can agree with what youve said, I was in a WvW JP, a guildmate of mine was dragging me along and there was this ledge that these 4 people were on just standing, minding their own but they all had huge wings and you couldnt really make out the start of the ledge exactly- the result- we fell to our deaths
I agree with the option to restrict the particle effects of other player’s items.
Not everyone has stupidly powerful hardware. and would heavily benefit from being able to tone it down to the point where they can….you know, actually play at some kind of FPS during huge group events.
A dedicated button to mute job-o-tron and all his incarnations would be lovely too.

I’m not offended in any way, since I know people have different tastes. The taste they have though, is very annoying. It’s not something I will simply quit over if it continues in this way, but play time can dwindle because of exhaustion seeing this all the time.
I do believe ArenaNet created all these items “at the heat of the moment” without properly thinking how a zerg or large groups of players with these items will look like. As it has come to, it has become quite ridiculous, and this is not only a theme that ruins much of the game world thing.
These infusions and wings and other very particle filled armour actually conceals much of the game world, causing others to misstep a jumping puzzle and die. Zergs in WvW can’t properly see red rings to avoid, and likewise in open PvE content like Dragon’s Stand.

Backpacks and flashier armours and effects were finer back in the older days (except for the humongous spell effects that were going on in combat) but now flash armours, visual infusions and obnoxiously big backpacks in form of wings have appeared far too much, and just destroys the general feeling of the game world.
then thats your problem. not anyone elses.
And he’s asking for ANet to give him a solution that would work better for him. It’s not like he’s asking for the backpacks he hates to be removed from the game. That would be absurd.
He’s just asking for some means to enjoy the high graphics settings without having to see the backpacks he doesn’t like for whatever reason.
And there are good reasons for there to be a hider. Jumping puzzles in areas with already bad camera angles. People who get literal headaches from a particular backpack. One of the backpacks is just incredibly ugly to them and it ruins their enjoyment of the game.
he does have a option all it does is make all players wear basic realistic armor that keeps immersion. “b-but muh max settings” what? do you like to sit in lions ark and brag about them or something?

While customizing your own character is all fun an that, some other players would rather it not get in the way of their own game.
Be it by putting pressure on hardware in large amounts, i.e seeing huge amounts of pure atheistic particles piling on top of effects from damage.
Visually being a nuisance in areas where precision is required (Mad King’s Tower anyone?)
You know the idea, it’s no bad ask for a way to tone it down on a user’s end client.

That option only works in PvP. It doesn’t work for PvE.
If they do any sort of hide item feature it should be: hide all or hide none. That way no one can argue about what is too “flashy”, “big”, “immersion breaking” etc.
The easiest would be to give PvE the same thing as PvP. I’m also only arguing for it due to the objective reasons: large wings on large Charr, or even just large Charr, make it hard for others to do jumping puzzles when the camera angle is already bad. Not because large wings are out of place in the game.
This is my struggle, and why I would love to hide the wings and large backpacks of other players, especially during jumping puzzles. (I’m the orange haired one in the middle).

Your skin will wrinkle and your youth will fade, but your soul is endless.
I can understand (all too well) the problems with large back items obstructing view, I can also understand that people may not like the glittery flashy shiny looks of some characters for whatever reasons. And while I do think that having a way to lower/hide those effects would be nice, I really don’t like the attitude “Your taste is annoying because I don’t like it” or “I don’t like your character’s style, so it’s hideous”. If nothing else, offensive wording brings up unnecessary opposition and can thus harm the presented idea in the end.
well i have ad infinitum and spirit smith and id still be ok with an option to hide backpieces. mainly because the black and white feather wing thingies are just so ugly T^T

I don’t understand why you care so much about what other players look like? As long as I think I look Boss, I couldn’t not care about the disco going on next to me, or the Charr that wants to loom like a monster from the power rangers.
Imagine going to the theater only to have the person in front of you wear a glowing, sparkling, noise making, enormous top hat that intruded into every watched scene. Your ability to see the play is impacted.
For the most part it seems as if people want this more to deal with highly intrusive pieces than just those that they personally dont care for.
Lol really? The only real story in this game is instanced, so the only. Problem you have are the ones you make your self, the only thing people with wings etc spoil is your enjoyment. It is really not as bad as everyone makes out.
Sure a way to hide things would be good for those who want to QQ about it, maybe add standard models so every one else looks the same, because that will make it better…….
To be fair, the larger backpacks, especially when used by Charr and Norn, do interfere with the ability to do jumping puzzles in places where the camera is pretty limited, and even moreso when you’re playing an Asura. Having the ability to hide backpacks (or even go to standard models) for those places wouldn’t be a bad idea.
The highlighted with red option will solve most of such issues by hiding characters models entirely unless you specificly click on them. It helps to reduce fps drops as well, so its a win-win situation.

Yes, while at it, give us the option to hide player’s titles, armor, weapon and back item skins.
As a matter of fact, turn all player models into sheep.
That would solve everything.
Sarcasm aside, I don’t think it would be fair to be able to hide back items or armor/weapon skins of ALL other players.
I mean, I worked hard for those legendaries and I didn’t work for them just for me to see them.
This isn’t a single-player game, and that would be against the very definition of an MMO.

For one I have no idea why you are so aggressive against these options being added in, since they do not affect you in the slightest, and two the Standard Model option is only in competitive game mode which is sPvP, while you can lower the Character model quality, it does not remove Back items or weapons the last I checked so you see people running around in Grey default Armor with particle effects and giant back pieces still.
So I ask you why should other players be forced to look at your choices, and conform to what you want graphics wise? Why should they have to lower there game quality because of other players decisions on Armor/Items that provide nothing other than Display clutter and rob them of better performance on their machine?
I mean, I worked hard for those legendaries and I didn’t work for them just for me to see them.

Most legendaries are hugly, i would dare to say only a handfull of them are nice to cool.
If i had to work for a legendary the 1st thing i would do, would be, apply a lvl 1 skin on the legendary weapon, most backpacks are ugly to..

There are times when I wish I could hide all backpacks. It’s very odd that even when I put the graphics all the way to their lowest setting, backpacks still show up. Distracting during a big world boss fight, which is really the only time I put graphics all the way down.

Mh, well, I do not want to turn that off, because it’s their people’s identity.
Like saying on the streets: “Man, your Eastpack backpack is terrible, get some ADIDAS NEO one”.
On the other hand, those terrible Barbie Fairytopia wings are bothering me so much!
and politically highly incorrect. (#Asuracist)

Nothing like trying to fight a world boss at 15fps with a screen full of sparkles in a mass of people.

Yeah, in those situations I think that the backpacks and weapon skins are counter-productive to having the graphics all the way down at all.

I don’t understand the argument for the other side still. We keep repeating it over, and over, and over again. People who want to see the backpacks and auras can.
You. Will. Never. Know. Someone can’t see something on your character. We already can set you to standard models, we know that. We can still see your backpacks with it on which is what the thread is about.
Your choices and tastes in skins don’t matter. Our choices and tastes in skins don’t matter. This again is an option that doesn’t effect you as you will never know someone has it on unless they go out of their way to tell you. So you need to stop playing the victim card. When legendary armor is available we already have the option to see it as a grey default skin. You’ll have to argue to have that changed, or your arguments for forcing people to see your legendary skins is moot.
Lastly the option is already is sPvP so it’s going to take some work, but the ground work is done.
Other players effects don’t bother me and if they do it’s my FPS so I just drop the graphics a little till everyone is standard models.
Probably WvW issues, the very few world bosses I’ve done I don’t see anything except lots of skill effects.
….. And Elementalist.
I wholeheartedly support the idea for a avatar slider. The add-on armors are more and more ridiculous looking. I think the high fantasy setting is over Anet has pushed it into Cartoon Network territory.

People with not the best computers would see it in PvE.
And there’s also jumping puzzles to consider with regards to large backpacks.
And standard model (without having to tank graphics) in open world PvE would help with the large charr/norn problem. Just like I turn off ground shaking when I’m doing jumping puzzles, I’d turn on standard models if I could. The game’s too pretty on my system to tank my graphics.
They do not look overly flashy to me. Customizing your character is the endgame of GW2.
You know, it’s funny because I thought the same thing when I read the latest ‘mount’ thread. It’s ironic, but we’re the ‘mounts’ in this game. Most MMOs use them to ‘show off’ their characters.
In Guild Wars 2, we show off ourselves with gawdy armor, glowies, and particle effects.
Given that situation, I can understand anyone wanting to turn off the disco ball scenario of some character’s outfit. Heck. I wish I could do that in real life with some of the outfits I see at Wal-Mart. . . .
Edit: Endless Soul gives a perfect example of why some players would want this. +1

Yea like I said, other players backpacks don’t bother me….
I don’t do JP unless I have too and when I do it’s always 1st person mode so I don’t see wings and if there is someone else with wings again it doesn’t bother me, they are faster at JP and will have run past me.
I really don’t see other players backpacks as a problem, given I’m mostly in WvW or PvP all I see is skill particle effects and the very few times I do pve it’s the same there, lots of players skill effects.
(Actually the only back pack that bothers me is the “beep boop” one that talks every 5 seconds but I fixed that by muting the game and turning up media player)
….. And Elementalist.
+1 for backpack/particle effects hiding, and I say this as someone with multiple obnoxious legendaries and a propensity for huge wings.
Like, I can’t believe some people think “I bought this stuff to show off, and by the spirits I have a right to hold your eyeballs hostage to my peculiar taste in shiny!” is a compelling reason to not implement a toggle. I mean, I can believe people feel that way, I just can’t believe they’re able to sustain it as an actual rhetorical stance without getting supremely bummed out about their life choices.

This doesn’t seem to have reduced the number of players I see running around too much, but has turned them into generic grey mobs in the major cities. I haven’t seen a seizure inducing light show in about 12 hours since the change.
I do, however, still see people with legendaries, giant hawk wings, etc. It would really help with things like jump puzzles to be able to turn off backpacks too…especially when your character is my height.

The easiest would be to give PvE the same thing as PvP. I’m also only arguing for it due to the objective reasons: large wings on large Charr, or even just large Charr, make it hard for others to do jumping puzzles when the camera angle is already bad. Not because large wings are out of place in the game.
“only works in pvp” so i can tell youve never used it. because thats false.
Why should they have to lower there game quality because of other players decisions on Armor/Items that provide nothing other than Display clutter and rob them of better performance on their machine?
they are already added in. im not aggressive here im simply stating you dont want to use them because “muh max settings” that only affects other players and puts them all in realistic armor everywhere. someone posted a screenshot of it. your asking to waste dev time on something thats already in the game.
No using the character model quality does not remove legendary armor or Backpieces or their particle effects, why should other players have to lower their gameplay experience because of people like you? The only place that Standar Models removes all Particle effects from items and back items/ Legendaries is PvP no where else.
Sure. I don’t understand why anyone would really care how anyone else plays/experiences the game. If we have the option to hide/view backpacks, enabling or disabling the feature won’t affect anyone else in the slightest. Other players won’t even know. To that end I can’t see a problem with having an option to hide backpacks or similar.
go to your graphics options and turn the character models at the bottom to low on both settings there.
I want to be play the game on max settings, because I am able to. I don’t want to lower the graphics just because some players want to make the most obnoxious looking characters ever. I rather have an option that remove objects—backpacks in this case—that have started to destroy the awesome and beautiful appearance of the rest of the game.

“people like you” get out of this us vs them mentality. i dont even have a legendary item or insane backpiece.

I wasn’t implying you had insane Legendaries or Backpieces, just your attitude, you would rather force other people to degrade their gameplay for selfish reasons that would have little to no impact on you. And you have come up with blatant lies that there were already options to disable the things discussed in this thread, which again there isn’t outside of PvP.
Anet has proven they have the ability to do what we ask for, they stop all particle effects from items in PvP without using standard models. They would just have to make it be able to toggle as an option.
You can disable Backpieces from showing on your character which means they may be able to do it so it applies to everyone. Could be a stretch since I don’t know the full limitation on the current design.
And they have the ability to let players toggle standard models in PvP, which could be ported to Pve and WvW. Which would more than likely be easier than the second idea.

And I was specifically referring to the Standard Character Models option that only works in PvP. It’s in the Competitive section of options which PvE isn’t a part of. I’m aware that lowering graphics settings removes a decent amount of the visual clutter. But it doesn’t remove as much as the PvP Standard Character Models setting. Where all races appear human with standard armor and weapons and looks identical.
However, I do agree that you weren’t being aggressive.
Since the PvP Standard Character Models setting is already in the game, it wouldn’t be too hard to turn it on in PvE as well.
I want a more direct solution.
Hey skins team, can we PUHLEEZE stop putting out skins that make dialog bubbles and talk loud? If that player wants to hear the same ~kneeslapper~ of a joke 60 times an hour, fine. But grant mercy to every other player. A line of speech is not the same as a sound effect.
You don’t have to make something LOUDER and BRIGHTER than everything else to make it unique and good.
One of my favorite things to do in this game is play on my big chunky max size Charr with his massive black wings and stand in front of people whom are busy working on jumping puzzles etc, furthermore it pleases me when they ask me to move and I purposely keep hovering around them for zero reason at all.
All jokes aside….
I wouldn’t mind an option to enable/disable all player back pieces due to possible FPS increase and/or load times albeit I will admit it sounds a bit pedantic given the camera zoom options we have available in game anyway to work around obstructing things in our way.
I don’t think I’ve ever really had problems with people wearing back pieces in small, enclosed areas such as JP’s.. I will admit for the latter part, cosmetically speaking… The style/fad these days with “wings” is far overused and I’d love to see some real, proper ornamental back pieces available.
When mmo’s introduce cosmetic wings, and repeatedly.. You know they’re running out of ideas. Sad.
TLDR: I support the option of hiding player’s back pieces for the sake of dipping my toes back into a more immersive “good old days” mmo experience. Wings free!
I do get where the OP is coming from. I find many of the backpacks to be excessively large as well. However, my issues rests mostly when you’re in a group and you’re trying to look for certain actions, identifiers, AOE rings, etc. but you’re being obstructed by obnoxious hindrances. You can’t single out the backpacks for this though. A lot of the issue is due to the skill effects and such but that’s for a separate thread.
I’d be in favor of hiding backpacks since the Model Quality drop-down menu does not hide them, only obnoxious armor. Though I feel like it is a ‘battle’ that won’t really be won since it doesn’t seem to be a large enough issue.
I worked hard for the stuff I got and I don’t like the idea at all that people would just be able to flick a switch and ignore that.
Also considering the end game of GW2 is cosmetic based I do not think this would be a good thing for the game as a whole either. Half the fun of getting cool looking stuff is being able to show off with it and if you can’t do that I feel like it loses some of its value.
No, I’m against that option.
It should be the backpack owner’s choice to show or hide it (like it is currently).
Lower graphics settings could hide the backpack, though. No harm there.
I’m against adding the option to be able to hide other player’s backpacks, unless that option hides the active player’s backpack, too.
Corsair CX500 PSU, Kingston V300 60GB SSD
+1 OP’s idea so much.
Ever since wing’s were introduced, i have hated the sight of winged Charrs.
It destroys any kind of immersion i have, when ever one of theese silly looking characters run by and they are like….everywhere

Personally I’m very pragmatic and have you all turned down to gray blobs. Much like the music slider there should be a player visual slider so I can still appreciate the landscape but for now.. blobs. Some bling does still show up and if you stand near me (or I stand near you) I do get more detail.
pve, raid, pvp, fractal, dungeon, world clearing, legendary questing.. Zapped!
I want people to see my skins, so I have to -1 this
But those people don’t want to see your skins. Why do you want those specific people to see your skins?
Because I worked for them. If they dont want to see them they should close their eyes.
I would only be ok with this if hiding a specific skin required permanently destroying it from your wardrobe.
and what about ppl with a slow rig, do they have to be punished for your selfishness?
