I was frustrated with the population of the servers before, but now it’s insane. My complaint isn’t actually with the number of players around, but now it’s impossible to fail events. Most players come in with a default setting that events are quests to be completed and can not be deterred from this mindset. I have 2 goals:

1) The events tell a story, even when they are failed. There are so many events in this game that trigger off a previous event failing that can no longer be experienced. I like to immerse myself in the story and play every event for success and failure to take part in the full lore of the area.

2) Along with many other generous players, I enjoy adding to the GW2 wiki. My biggest endeavor is to help with the completion of the documentation of every event in the game. This task has become impossible as I can’t access those events triggered by failure.

Before the Megaservers, one could guest onto a smaller server to avoid these kinds of problems. I recognize that I am in a minority, but is there anything that can be done to allow players to access a dying or closing Megaserver so that players like myself can enjoy every aspect of this game?

Maybe my answer can sound a bit rude but really? You’d like to move to server where you can fail events (in these days of farm&fix) just for enjoy what happens if thye fail?

There are lots of event failing in low level areas because there are not enough people. But I think you’re interested in something more profitable

I would love to have an option to move to a less populated map. I see absolutely no point in autowinning all events along with masses of players frantically tagging creatures before they evaporate.

Loot is utterly meaningless. Only gameplay matters. And there is no gameplay in the zerg.

Count me in, big time. I have lag issues to the point of occasional disconnects during some of the big boss events now. I never had a problem before. And some events go so fast that I can’t get in a single shot to get participation credit.

I’ve had to turn player names off, too. The mass of text on my screen pretty much blocks out everything else in town.

But more important than the tangible issues are the intangible ones. I like to feel as if my participation actually means something. You don’t get that in a zerg.

Yeah, the zerg definitely takes away the visceral combat. And, no, Neve, I’m not secretly trying to undermine the game economy. Sometimes, when you fail an event, it triggers a new event. It’s just my style of gameplay. I literally explore EVERYTHING. When I do map completion, I make sure I do every event, including the follow up events. That’s why after playing for 2 years, I still have not completed my map. I can’t do every event if they’re impossible to fail. Nor can I complete my research to add the event info to the wiki.

I would like to have such an option to go to boss events again.
With the current 100+ at bosses they are just to boring to go there.

Somehow that can be even seen as selecting a difficulty level. Less populated a little bit more demanding.

i really, really, really want an option to switch maps… even if its at random, even if it sends me to map w/ a certain population level, even if anet has to recode gathering nodes to accommodate for intentional targeted farming… let me switch my kittening map without right clicking and joining a party member. because that is the worst unintentional workaround ever.

Sigh… I know that feel bro, I really do. I’m just exactly like you but yes, we are a minority, a very small one.

However this is not going to happen. It’s against all the mega-servers stands for.
ArenaNet has even announced changes to the mega-server to avoid empty instances (currently, you can end roaming almost alone but while I’ve been lucky to experience this a few times, it’s very rare).

I just gave up, MMOs don’t support this kind of gameplay (I finally realized this is why I loved GW1 so much).

If you really want to stick to this, try log-in when a world boss is about to spawn. If you are lucky you may end in a new, less populated instance.

Why fix the Necromancer for free when we can charge $$$ for the Revenant

Do want.
Maybe we are a minority, but since the very introduction of megaserver we were literally begging for some escape from this, and there were more votes like that than you’d expect. This is not “a very small” minority.
On those rare occasions when I end up on a fresh overflow with few people and I can do bigger events with just a small group around… Well, I almost forgot how much fun this game used to give.
It’s incredible how in every other MMO when I meet some players I’m super happy to see them cause this or that was impossible or very hard to do alone. GW2 how it is now makes me basically hate anyone who comes closer, and even if I’m having trouble with something I’m like “GO AWAY I CAN DO THIS ALONE!”. That’s what unbelievable crowds everywhere do to people.

You could always try logging on to Guild Wars 1. I hear those servers are pretty empty.

Seriously, where’s the “-1” button when you need it?

districts would be great for maps. little drop down menu added to a waypoint when you click on it. you can see how many districts there are. if district 1 is too populated you can jump to district two. this would fix SO many issues:

  • Guild Missions
  • Teq. and Wurm Organization
  • Dry Top T6
  • Champ Farms —honestly so people that want to kill stuff when they want to kill it can do so in peace without being flamed by the zerg, but also so the zerg can do the events how they want to--

I could list more but won’t. The current system is one of the many steps back from the GW1 way of doing things.

Dredge isn’t that easy to get on mega-servers, you need two failed events and both succeed with just 1 person doing them …
But I managed from time to time, while farming linen baggies on that map.

Fire shaman I asked in map & guild chat, but not one joined. And it needs 2 that know what they are doing to kill him.

Ogre I am rarely on this map, I am not even sure how to get him.

But being restricted to 3 uncommon bosses is quite an decline compared to pre-MS in any case.

would even take 50-man world bosses, at least then i’d consistantly get the champ boxes (like pre-megaserver)

right now, its 100+ at all times…every WB event……….the events suck.
thankfully, temples still have times of day where its only about 30-50 doing them.

I miss my days of exploring on a low pop server. Soloing events in remote locations, helping out hylek, quaggans, even some grawls, saving settlements from kraits and bandits and so on. That felt like beeing a real Hero of Tyria. It felt like MY story.
It actually mattered what you did in boss events, all hands on deck to beat the timer, sometimes with just seconds to go.
It was a lot more fun.

Just turn up to a world boss a couple of minutes late to increase the likelihood of not getting on to the default map. Then stick around on the map that would have been called an overflow before megaservers were introduced. Once everyone leaves to go do the next boss you’ll have an empty ish map. Once the megaserver changes occur, just don’t go to a busier map when the system offers the chance to do so.

If the “volunteer” offer added in https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/continued-improvements-to-the-megaserver-system/ does not occur to often and it will not enforce you after some offers, this may work a while to play on an empty map. After a while the server may refile your map and for the next boss it will be full again.

Not a strategy to get an empty boss, but probably useful to have a low-pop map between world-boss event.

As a completionist, I was hoping that megaservers would at least cause the population-based events to trigger, but it hasn’t even done that. But that’s another post entirely.

It’s not that I don’t want to play with people. I understand anet’s philosophy of trying to bring people together and I think it’s a noble one. But I can’t keep having my personal game progress and my work for the GW2 community on the wiki hindered like this! All it takes is one mindless player whose only care is for the few hundred XP he gets from the event to run in and ruin it. He doesn’t care that I’ve been sitting there for 30 minute intervals for the event to reset, multiplied by however many times a mindless player has run in to ruin it. Megaservers have only increased the availability of the mindless players.

I suppose another option would be to rework every event to increase the challenge and create a real risk of failure for the events, but that would probably be more work for the programmers.

Well, yeah, reworking scaling and difficulty for events would also fix the problem… Any change that would return anything slightly resembling a challenge to the open world.
