Organizing inventory
You can rely on the compact feature if you are desperate, but I just organize it manually.
Put an invisible bag in your last bag slot to keep things out of the merchant window and from being compacted. Different bags have different effect read the description.
I usually just use the compact feature so all the stuff I need is at the top of my inventory (usually only like 15 basic salvage kits and 3 master ones and sometimes some geodes or bandit crests). I know some people like to have different sets of gear in their inventory but if you only ever use one build like me there is no need so the compact feature is perfect.

yup, I currently have 1 invisible bag slot and a bunch of standard 20 slots.
my organization is just tossing all the important stuff in the invisible bag, and using my copper-fed to salvage literally everything, then depositing to collectables. never had a bag problem
It’s hard to tell someone else how to organize, same as it’s hard to tell someone else what shorthand to use in taking notes in class (or during trial). Where you put things and where you expect to find them will be individual.
That said, I suggest you keep things organized by “type.” Consumables, salvage kits, spare weapons, costume gear, toys, etc. Keep in mind that new items in inventory will go to the first open slot in your bags, unless you have a bag that sorts by type, in which case they’ll go to the first space in that bag if it has any. Keep your inventory sized consistently so you will always know whether something is on the left or right side.
I keep an invisible bag at the bottom for things I absolutely don’t want to lose. Then in the bags above it I keep deeper storage items that I don’t get at all the time. If I have an alt with a lot of costume armor, I sort that out by head/shoulders/legs, skimpiest to most coverage in each category. I make sure to pack all the lower bags fully so new items won’t mix in with items I’m keeping.
Higher up, where I’ll see it without scrolling down, I keep a line of unequipped weapons that are the best I have of that weapon type. On the right side near the top I’ll have salvage kits. Somewhere in that vicinity I’ll line up consumables. I keep my backpack and the next bags as empty as I can so I can always see new items at a glance. There is a feature that makes new ones light up but it was so overwhelming I disabled it and haven’t checked since to see if they dimmed it to usable levels. I do enable the colored border for rarity so when I salvage I can zoom along the items and not mis-click something that will toggle off the kit.
When I have a bit of down time (eg after Labyrinth or between fractals) I might shift things around in the top bags, moving rares to a clump, things I want to bank to another clump, things to TP to a clump, etc. Essentially I’m always moving items around in my bags to keep them in category groups, and I always put a certain category in a certain location.
On my most played alts, even with a lot of 20 slot bags mostly full, I can generally find any item I am looking for without using the search feature or spending time eyeball-searching. I even know what items I have, thanks to manually moving them around at need which refreshes my memory.
I hope that helps you come up with your own system.
Depending on your back slot availability. I use this set up
basic bag – filled with tonics/kits/etc anything not sellable to fill space. (want it at 20)
Invis 20 slot – legend/ascended weapons/jewels – keep this full
Invis 20 slot -Ascended armor sets – keep this full
karka shell bag-iblues/crafting stuff
Exotic 20 slot – all exotic loot will fall here
rare 20 slot – all rare loot falls here
MW 20 slot – all MW falls here
Oilled 20 bag – junk (grey stuff goes here)
It’s the only way I could figure out to make my legend/ascended weapons and gear fall into the right bags when I change equipment:/ It’s not 100% flawless but it works decently.

I think it would be nice if it didnt matter what order the bags were for the loot to drop in first.
As an example:
invisible bag in the first slot: i want my foods and a weapon or 2 to switch out but also a few open spots in case i loot somethin and cant decide if i want to sell or not. if new obtained stuff didnt fill up that first and went simply to the regular bag before filling up a named bag unless it belongs in the named bag (crafting mats go to craft bag, junk items to oiled bag. ect…) then that would be nice.
I keep at the top the stuff I normally carry that won’t sell to a merchant, such as karma items, gathering tools, salvage kits. Then at bottom in my invisible bag is all the stuff I normally carry that merchants will buy, such as food, potions, weapons, armor. In between are the various types of bags.
ANet may give it to you.
I think inventory organisation is a bit like keybindings, it’s very personal and there’s no ‘right’ way of doing it. You just have to experiment to find the best for you.
What I do is:
- Keep it separated into bags instead of merging them, and have the window sized to show 1 at a time.
- Use an invisible bag in the bottom slot to store most the stuff I always keep with me (Although account bound items get booted to the bag above if I get a lot of items I want to keep).
- Use an oiled bag in the slot above to keep junk separated from useful items.
- I have a ‘quick access’ row at the bottom of my uppermost bag for things like my salvage kit and boosters.
- I never use the compact option. i do use deposit all collectables a lot though.
