Okay, I just gotta ask. What’s the point with outfits?
If everything were armor skins parts, then everyone would be able to combine and play with their looks a lot more. If anything wouldn’t this kind of change just increase ArenaNet’s sales in the gem store?

I have yet to found even one outfit that actually is worth looking at as a whole. But if I could combine a few parts of an outfit set with other parts of another outfit set, or with a regular armor skin set, then that would be a very different story.

There have been many threads that have already posed this question and the answer is this:

Outfits:
Advantages: Requires no use of transmutation charges. (This means that you can keep the same desired look throughout levelling as well as a fast way of changing your look without reskinning your armour).

Disadvantages: Outfits come as a whole and can’t be changed up. Why? They haven’t been designed as separate pieces and thus haven’t been tested with other armour pieces to refine any clipping issues. This kind of testing takes a lot of resources and time, so by removing this factor Anet can pump out a lot of different outfits a lot faster and gain more revenue by meeting a larger audience and their different fashion tastes.

Hypothetically speaking, if outfits could be used as individual armour piece skins, outfit purchases would be a little OP. Currently you can buy 6-piece armour skin sets (e.g. krytan, primeval) for a very similar price to an outfit- if outfits also became separate armour skins it would be a little unfair to the cost of armour skins (as comparitively you’d get double the usage for the same cost).

General consensus: outfits and armour fill different niches. The disadvantage of one is filled by the advantage of the other.

Personally, I doubt that outfits will ever be able to be separated. I think the best we can hope for is to use a non-outfit headpiece with an outfit (like in GW1) considering there is little chance of headpieces clipping with the rest of the armour.

Their reasoning: Source (page 18).

“When we started looking at bringing more of the clothing back into armor with mix and match styles there are some fundamental incompatible things between weight classes. (part of how we set up every armor to allow many dye channels and styles per piece)..”
And
“Outfits give us a way to create highly stylized looks that aren’t constrained to armor slots or weight class.”

The problem is with the different armor weights and incompatibilities between weights. It means that they can’t make one set for all 3 sets of armor weights They would have to make 3 sets (which would then be armor and not outfits) and price them individually. With outfits they can make one set and sell it to all armor weights.

I am 100% with you, OP. I have never (and will never) buy an Outfit. I don’t care how nice it looks; if I’m going to look exactly like everyone else in the game I don’t want it. On the other hand, if I could use individual pieces I would probably have purchased everything they’ve put out to date.

Apparently they’ve decided to go the McDonald’s/Wal-Mart route and court the huddled masses for their money. Those of us with more refined tastes are getting the short end of the stick these days.

Outfits need to show hats

Unless they split outfits into hat and rest of the outfit like in GW1, when you wear one, you can only hide the head part at most.

Not being able to combine them with all sorts of other gear takes away much more than any other part.

All outfits already have the head part separate because of personal story cinematics. At least that part of the work is done.

Yeah, you can’t combine them like with town clothes, but if only you could combine hats and outfits, that alone would compensate greatly.

Just imagine wearing glasses or a fancy mask with a dress; or top hats or the monocle with suits; or combine wizard and witch or the horns hats with wicked and hexed outfits.

Just that one single piece of customization, without bringing all the other pieces town clothes had, would allow endless combinations and possibilities, if many of the common headgear that was converted into armor skins was also unlocked as “hats” usable in the hat slot.

Hats must come back.

Yup, as posted above, outfits are the only way to get the same look for all three armor classes.

Also, they can do things with an outfit that simply can’t be done with armor. You can make things flow from one body part to another much better when the clothing doesn’t have to break cleanly into pieces at specific places.

This was even more noticeable in GW1, where the outfits had looks that were completely different than what was possible with armor.

I should be writing.

Indeed. In GW1 we could combine hat and outfit with armor. So you could have:
- All armor.
- All outfit.
- Outfit hat + armor.
- Armor head + outfit.

In GW2, that would mean being able to do things like quickly putting on some glasses over your armor, and all sorts of great combinations you can imagine.

Believe it or not, outfits sell in the current state of the game, and they sell big time. Customers like outfits as they are, including me.

This is my personal feedback: I like outfits as they are, I do not want outfits sold by piece. Keep up the great work in outfits design ArenaNet, and when possible please make more gem offers, related to outfits.

If you wanna look like everybody else then have at you… i however want skins and i WOULD be gladly paying 800 gems per skin pack cause then i can combine it however i please and dye it however i please. 4 Colour slots and no way to combine the pieces with others isnt worth my money.

I have some outfits, and use them mainly when leveling a new character and also
on my 2 Asuras.

However, i really wish we would also get again some real armor sets. I think we didn’t
even got one new set in the shop since we got the wardrobe .. only outfits after that.

That somehow as schizophrenic as that we got the possibility to change traits now
everywhere for free .. but that new characters simply didn’t have those traits to test with.

Outfits are awesome for leveling, simple as that. They make it so you don’t have to look like a cobbled together clown every 5 levels. There’s still plenty of armor in the game for you who want to mix and match. Just because they don’t offer EXACTLY what you want doesn’t mean that it’s some terrible travesty. The entire system with transmutation stones kinda sucks. This is an alternative that I for one greatly appreciate. I’ll still transmute my max level gear to get exactly what i want but for leveling outfits can’t be beat.

I enjoy having a few outfits available for seasonal things, PvPing on alts, and just general leveling for the most part. It’s also good for a quick switch up for my looks when I don’t feel like tinkering for an hour.

So yeah, I enjoy the outfits a lot. And I really enjoy the fact I can just click a button and switch in and out of them at will.

I want more regular armor sets (and ones that aren’t gemstore only) but I don’t mind getting some outfits here and there.

Creative, original and meticulous people dont buy enough. They tend to use what they have at hand and adjust every detail on it to make things exactly like they want. A lot of them are never satisfied, but even that doesn’t send them into buying more.

So you have to sell to the happy credit card ones, offering quick, easy and not too complicated products. You will be selling to those who find things they like here and there, buy that and this, and then find another pretty thing over there and buy again.

It make sense.

All I hope is they don’t completelly stop making new armor sets. Because they could…

Absolutely.

The other thing is, even if they designed something that could actually be sold as armour skins, it might actually be more profitable to sell it as an outfit as players feel they will get more use out of it (as it can be used universally across all armour weights.)

Honestly I like the individual peices better but there are limitations to them too.. for one thing you can only wear the light medium or heavy ones for your class. And I think we are far passed armor being realistic in this game to keep limiting appearance gear to armor class. Each peice also costs a transmute stone. Those can really add up if you love playing with fashion and change your look a lot.
I do like outfits but yes they end up looking like everyone else besides being able to dye it differently. I think there are enough of them now to have a lot of variety though and plus you can just slap them on any character leveling up and not worry about paying to transmute.

I think if they did more armor sets I would like it so any armor paid for with gems should be free to transmute like the weapons you get out of the achievement sets. We already pay enough for those things. Also just nix the armor class and make it all can wear them. After all who cares at this point? We have warriors and guardians running around in countess Anise outfit so I think we are past realism

And outfits cost as many gems as a armor set but you cant mix and match.

If players would stop buying the outfits in protest to them maybe Anet will stop taking the lazy route.

You are wrong- they released carapace AND luminescent armour with the Silverwastes Patch (which was just before christmas, I believe). Even better than gemstore armour skins, they can be obtained in game.

Outfits cost 100 gems less than an armour set and you can use an outfit on any armour weight.

As, presumably, it would be light armour classes only?

They both (i.e. outfits and armour sets) have a place in the game.

Perhaps what they should do is try to make an armour set version of all the existing outfits (and vice versa), if possible?

That way, people who played the armour class they were aimed at could buy the armour set version and people who didn’t (or wanted something for their chars to wear while levelling), but still liked the look, could buy the outfit version.

I think outfits and skins should be re-mix for one, just like all-in-one functional package, and re-pricing.

For example, when players buy a skin package, they can choose one category from light armour, medium armour, heavy armour and outfit.

If players don’t want to mix and match, they can choose outfit, and another players still can keep their own choice.

If so, I’m sure that can meet the needs of all players.

I know that maybe is a burdensome process, but we believe YOU can make it.

I do not want full set of armor in gemstores.

They are expensive. 800 gems for one set vs. 700 gems for an outfit. 2400 gems for all three sets. I also have to buy transmutation stone if I want the old look again. With outfit, I can switch to my outfit or my armor.

I rather that ANet add 100 more outfits than adding three more gemstore armor because the outfit will have all my money.
