Q:

I have yet to test it myself (I plan to) but I would just like some other opinions from the community on this particular topic.

Would you say that overclocking your CPU yielded performance increases? Specifically in scenarios like world boss events, WvW and generally in CPU intensive scenarios.

Thanks a lot in advance guys and I look forward to reading your answers.

A while ago, I had to replace my video card. At the time, my computer wasn’t overclocked, so I did a small FPS test in Lion’s Arch.

Going from a 570 GTX to 770 GTX, I gained 5 FPS.

Overclocking an i7 2600K from 3.4 GHz to ~4.7 GHz, I gained 20 FPS.

Not always, everyones system is different, ive seen people they have OC’d and had a great boost in performance, such as the person above me, but if you head over to the bugs section of the forums, some people who OC get some strange bugs and errors occurring which causes the game to crash.

It depends on how much you OC by, if you do it too close to instability. You’ll encounter crashed such as people report. It also depends on your system specs, I went from a 2.22GHZ duel core, and 4GB ram and a 9800GT 1GB. I upgraded to a i5 4690K 8GB ram I kept the card as I can’t afford a new card and psu. And my frames have gone up quite a bit to over 40 FPS.

If you OC, you need to make absolutely sure that you have top-notch cooling and that you follow the instructions (if available) provided by the manufacturer of your CPU and motherboard precisely. Overclocking puts a lot of stress on the CPU and can shorten its service life appreciably, especially if not done quite right, and I’ve never done it myself since I personally don’t think that the potential benefit in performance increase outweighs the potential cost in hardware damage and software issues. As pointed out above, upgrading your hardware, if you can afford it, is likely a much better path than putting extra stress on your existing hardware. I upgraded from 8GB to 16GB last year (the printed motherboard manual indicated 8GB was the maximum and I didn’t know I could go to 16GB until I researched online) and I’ve seen distinct improvements in GW2 performance.

Overclocking is a great way to get some more performance. Make sure that your temps stay at a reasonable level and you’ll be fine.

The game is more often CPU bound than GPU. So OCing the CPU should make a discernible difference in your performance. As long as you take care of the extra heat OC generates both on the CPU and motherboard.
