Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

I have found a number of things in GW2 that juuuuuust aren’t named quite right.
What oxymorons and contradictions have you found in the game?
Hmm, ancient sapling is not necessarily a contradiction.
If the tree is one that requires a thousand years to mature, a human with a seventy year life expectancy might very well consider a seven hundred year old sapling to be ancient.
Sadly, one was recently removed from the Cliffside fractal – the veteran novices.
I always thought the ancient sapling was the stump of a long dead (ancient) sapling. It certainly doesn’t look living to me.

Ha, that reminds me of the Super Novice class in Ragnarok Online! XD
I have found a number of things in GW2 that juuuuuust aren’t named quite right.
- One of the harvestable wood nodes is called an “Ancient Sapling”. A sapling is a young tree. How can a young tree also be “ancient”? And why is it one of the physically largest?
- In Wayfarer Foothills a “Passed Out Warrior” walked right by me. Hmm… I suppose he could have been sleepwalking.
- I found a bunch of dead “Pact Survivors” while running around in Heart of Thorns. I’m no expert, but shouldn’t survivors be – you know – alive?
- My Charr Warrior uses a rifle. The animations for his shooting skills show him bringing his weapon up to his shoulder, and sighting down the barrel to fire. …All except skill number two – “Aimed Shot” – which has him shooting from the hip.
What oxymorons and contradictions have you found in the game?
1: A plain sapling is a young, LIVING tree. Ancient saplings that we chop down are [b]definitely[/i] not living anymore, and their age is measured in numbers big enough to classify them as being ancient (the age definition). Additionally, it could also be the largest because… well, those saplings were quite likely immature versions of trees similar to redwoods.
2. It’s fine. They’re probably walking back to the point on the map in that heart area where they lie down so someone else can dump water on them.
3. You arent getting the train of thought here. They SURVIVED the reprisal against the pact fleet, hence Pact Survivors. They didnt necessarily survive what came afterwards.

Spoilsport. :p
Killing ghosts. That never made sense to me. -.-
Nobody has found any “Jumbo Shrimp” yet? No “Boneless Ribs” for sale at the Meatoberfest? No “Humble Asura” wandering around Rata Sum?
I see there’s a “Mini Sand Giant”.
And I’d be willing to bet Gaile could find a “Svelte Quaggan” if anyone can.

Well, if you don’t kill them, they kill you. Seems sensible to me.
Hahahah, nice finds OP!
Poorly aimed shot.

That’s because the Lion was blown up and destroyed by Scarlet.
We get these things that are labeled as “trophies” and then when we go to a merchant we have the option to “sell junk” and all of those trophies disappear.
I don’t think those Pact Survivors are dead since you can Revive them. Reviving them ain’t actually raising them from the dead, but more like helping them gain consciousness and recovering. (At least that’s how i think about it) If they were actually dead, there wouldn’t be a revive option, if you have noticed.
It always struck me as odd that we run around seeking weedy little saplings to cut into a paltry 3 logs whilst ignoring the huge mature trees, any one of which would give us enough logs for life. You could even choose one that is close to the crafting station to save carrying 120 wooden logs halfway around the world.
I do love that Aimed shot hahaha…
At times I wonder when they’re gonna change the name of “Aimed shot” into “Leg shot”, “Low shot” or something that sounds more fitting.
Sadly, one was recently removed from the Cliffside fractal – the veteran novices.
I giggled when I saw that change in the patch notes.
And Ancient Sapling still gets me. :\

Still mad about that, by the way. I did see a lion as I went looking, but it’s nowhere nearly as glorious or prominent as the old statue(s) were.

There are “Veteran Novices” in the cliffside fracttal.
There are a selection of small soft wood saplings that give you Hard Wood Logs, as well as a selection of small hard wood saplings that give you Soft Wood Logs.

The Lions still there, you have to find it. Also, there are many arches in architecture of Lions Arch.
I miss the central lion statue too. We no longer have a central gathering spot or focal point for festivals. The world has grow a bit colder.

We have to go to a Trading post npc to pick up items or gold, but we can sell items without one… how does that work? How do items disappear from your inventory without the npc?

You know how that guy in Silverwastes has constant fundraisers for some cause or another? Why couldn’t we have a “Put the Lion Back in Lion’s Arch” fundraiser for Lion’s Arch?
I miss that statue, darn it! When I came across it in the ruins in the bay, I honestly welled up. LA is the heart and soul of Tyria, after all.
Oh and good finds, OP. This is a fun thread!

Cool! You’re chairing the committee, Gaile! (Or Charring the committee if you prefer). Have the Devs tinker with that NPC’s innards, and start up the fundraiser!
(But then I remember the guy in LA collecting donations the first time the statue was destroyed. He was there forever before anything got done. Perhaps this could be a little more player-involved, and a little quicker to come to fruition?)

That’s an easy one. Pay attention and you can actually see the mail carrier dove lifting off when you sell something.

I have a 100G to contribute to the cause! Bring back my lion!
The one that gets me:
At what point did someone think it was a good idea to cut down saplings to get lumber?
Scenario:
Need wood for weapons? …yes
Do I have an axe? …also yes and with unlimited uses
Where should I get wood? …from a sapling of course, because everyone knows full grown trees would yield less lumber
Can I please just chop down full grown trees? It would save me a ton of running around.

There needs to be an official “Save the Lion Statue” Fundraiser! That thing was a monument to our enduring spirit as Tyrians. After being repeatedly blown up and remade, it rose from the ashes of war like a phoenix. We need the Lion back in Lion’s Arch!
… I feel bad for Toilet-papering it during Halloween each year. Sort of.

Because it’s a Tyrian dove, not an Elonian one. something something airspeed unladen

Cherry trees give soft wood. Cherry wood is hard wood.
Pine trees give hard wood. Pine wood is soft wood.
Gold ore and ingots aren’t even worth a silver. Platinum is more valuable than gold, but you still can’t a gold piece for it without selling a mountain of the stuff.

I suspect the maker of the Lion’s arch statue quit, since the statue became common target for vandals and anarchists.
Those ghost trebuchets/cannons in Diessa Plateau…how does that even work? They were never alive, how can they be ghosts too?!

A Charr Engineer’s gunk? Then it’s a hairball. It’s not about the prize, it’s about how difficult it is to steal it.
A sylvari walks up to the Ancient Sapling. With hair like these, who needs trees?
I don’t get how the PvP NPCS are able to stomp themselves when they get downed…
I also don’t get how they can get up from being downed to stomp someone who is down before it kills them.

Shhhh. Don’t say that out loud. You’ll hurt their feelings.
They became ghosts in the fight against the Charr because they wanted to get into the spirit of things.

This stricken me a while ago..
(maybe a bit exaggerated)
- Frostfang is an Axe.. A Legendary Axe.. Which in the process of making it, you use Orichalcum, Mithril, Darksteel and Platinum, among other things..
- What do you need to cut an Ekku Sapling? An Axe, at least a copper one..
- And yet you cannot use Frostfang to cut an Ekku Sapling…
Another one… Why weaponsmith cannot create gathering tools? (Lorewise at least..)
Also, Veteran Risen Spider Hachling…

Killing ghosts. That never made sense to me. -.-
Well technically you are not killing the ghosts, But you are temporarily ¨disbanding¨(couldnt think of a better word) its ghostly essence. The ¨killed¨ ghosts will reform after a while.
This is at least how it was explained in the book ¨ghosts of ascalon¨ :p
