Well technically you are not killing the ghosts, But you are temporarily ¨disbanding¨(couldnt think of a better word) its ghostly essence. The ¨killed¨ ghosts will reform after a while.
This is at least how it was explained in the book ¨ghosts of ascalon¨ :p

It says something about the Charr that they’re able to survive Duke Barradin’s onslaughts every few weeks. Then again, I suspect MOST of his incursions aren’t aided by Legionnaire Urvan Steelbane’s disastrous incompetence at leadership.
